Rally held to support push for federal immigration reform

May 5, 2010 11:31 AM

Neighbors in Support of Immigrants, an ad hoc group of about 60 East End residents chaired by Sylvia Baruch of Hampton Bays, gathered at Lola Prentice Park in Southampton Village on Saturday afternoon to beat the drum in support of comprehensive immigration reform.

NISI was granted permission by Southampton Village officials to gather at the park on Windmill Lane, which is less than a mile from the 7-Eleven located on North Sea Road, where throngs of day laborers gather regularly looking for work and protesters regularly demonstrate against them.

Speakers supporting reform included Luis Valenzuela, executive director of the Long Island Immigrant Alliance; Sandra Dunn, immigration program officer for the Hagedorn
Foundation; Myrna Tuitt, chair of the Committee on Social
Justice at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Bridgehampton; Andrea Callen, director of the Suffolk County Chapter of the American Civil
Liberties Union; and Isabel Sepulveda, publisher of bilingual newspaper Voz Latina.

The rally was one of many held across the nation last weekend, fueled in part by a controversial law recently enacted in Arizona that makes it a crime to be in that state without legal immigration status. That law authorizes local police to question people about their status based on
suspicions that they may be illegal.

“All of us are immigrants, if we go back far enough, and we need to end the antagonism by creating legislation that helps a
vital part of our workforce
become recognized and respected,” rally attendee Joanna Komoska of Tuckahoe said on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a small group of flag-waving protesters gathered across Windmill Lane near the North End Cemetery, protesting immigration reform. Paul Forthmuller of Hampton Bays, holding a handmade sign that read “Deport Illegal Aliens,” said, “The first thing is we need to protect our country from the invasion of aliens from south of the border.”

FYI Illegal aliens are NOT immigrants and also the Arizona law only allows police to ask for papers after they have confronted someone who has committed an infraction against the law. The federal government has ignored this issue for far too long.

I know many, many people that at one point of their life were what you call "Illegal" aliens..now they are citizens and own or work in local business....they are the same people that a few years ago were undocumented many of them have to wait 10 or 20 years to legalize their situation and spend 10, 16 or 20,000 to get to that point...is not easy in some cases almost impossible!

I attended this rally and I was pleased to see so many concerned, thoughtful, and intelligent residence who realize the importance of immigration reform. Part of the legislation currently on the table includes stemming the flow of immigrants over our borders and cracking down on employers as well as offering those currently here a pathway to citizenship that recognizes their years spent living and working here as productive and peaceful members of our society.

I couldn't agree more with you that hard working people who want to come to this country to be productive members of our society should be welcomed. Unfortunately, the violence that has come from the lack of securing our borders and enforcing immigration laws has brought a breakdown of the system that we are paying for. You get what you reap...and our government has turned it's back on addressing this issue. Very sad situation for both the illegals and our fellow citizens.
By BeachGal (72), Hampton Bays on May 6, 10 11:08 AM
I personally have talked to hundreds of illegal immigrants on the east end, and roughly 95% of them told me they have no wish to stay and become a citizen, that they only want to work for 3-5 years and then go back to their countries. Most of them told me that they send most of their wages back to their countries of origin. How is that helping anything here?

Arizona is under siege and is taking steps to protect it's citizens from people entering the country illegally. For that they are labeled racists. Folks, what is racist about protecting your borders? What is racists about enforcing federal laws? What is racist about trying to reduce the amount of drugs on the street?

Most of the illegal immigrants in this country are very nice, hard working people. The problem is some are not. At a glance how do you tell which one is which? You can't. We need controls on this. Controls that apply to everyone. We can no longer tolerate people coming in and out of the country at will. It's time the Federal govt does something to fix this.

Some people are so ignorant when it comes to immigration that shouldn't even comment or talk about it until knowing exactly all the facts. Immigrants are people who need to come to this wonderful country to try to get a better life. They are illegals because they have to; not because they want to. It's not easy to get papers unless you have a family member who can file a petition and that could take up to 10 years, not everybody has a family member in the USA. Why is there an "insatiable hunger for their labor" with an all time high unemployment rate. I would gladly do the job. I havent been able to find a job here in almost 2 years, and I search every day. And second, most of them dont want to stay. I dont understand why people draw their labor from 7-11, when their are millions of unemployed AMERICAN citizens searching for jobs.

The first thing to understand is that undocumented people are here because of the dire economic straits they find themselves in -- and that there are people in America who will hire them. Wages in Mexico have shrunk by 20%. How well do you think the Long Island economy will do if the feds keep shrinking the number of allowable HB-1 and HB-2 work visas? And no matter how much you scream an yell, 27dan, hate, fear and ignorance are still hate, fear and ignorance. You know who blames immigration for all ills of our society? Cowards. Cowards who do not have the courage to fight corporations and corrupt government officials. Cowards who, instead of taking on the big guys, blame those with the least power.

okay fine. So what's your answer. Okay republicans of the do nothing party. Don't say to round everyone up and deport them. I hope you have a more ingenius and practical answer than that.

Yes , I believe as a country we looked the other way for too long. That said.... It would not be fair to deport these people. We gave them mortgages, bank accounts, and allowed them if they wanted to pay taxes. They have American born children, Jobs and business in the US for many years. I believe we should give those people conditional amnesty. If they can show what I have listed above to be true, They should have an opportunity to register with a probational program that would grant them citizenship ...more

The Republicans are equally responsible here. Bush was a pushover on this issue. What needs to be done, is to have all the freebies taken away. We can start by amending the 14th amendment. End birthright citizenship and deny free education to illegals. Illegals should also be denied hospital services. In other words they should not be given anything that is subsidized by tax payer dollars. If the carrots are taken away, then they wont come. I also feel that there should be harsh penalties on businesses ...more

Once again these people are illegal aliens not immigrants. Why do people refer to them as immigrants? Immigrants are people that come here legally. The way my grandparents and so many others did in the early 20th century.

Sounds very humane. Refuse medical care to illegals. Does that count for illegal children too? Do you ask for the contractors records when you hire them? The problem with republicans is that they can't honestly say what they really want. You just want all illegals deported, it's the law right. Just say you hate everything about illegals and they are responsible for the miserable life you have in america and you want them all out. Don't dress it up. Tell it like it is . Please refer to the FEDERAL LAW title 8 chapter 12 subchapter II part IX item 1357. Enforce the LAW and legally deport them or find a away get rid of them. They are like leaches feeding off of free entitlements.

The highest amount of dead beat accounts at Southampton hospital is still white uninsured. what's your answer razza, maybe like Planet of the Apes, catch in nets and tie a rope around their neck. If you saw a legal immigrant or an illegal alien would you know the difference and treat accordingly or would you just have all latinos moved regardless from the hamptons.
By Mets fan (1186), Southampton on May 10, 10 11:40 AM
I would ENFORCE the LAW. Just because you don't like the LAW its not my fault. Personnally I think stiff penalties for employers hiring them, elimination of any entitlement plans (schooling, medical care and financial assistance ect) and proof of legal US status is a good start. There are many good hard working latinos here legally. This is not about them.
By razza5350 (1901), East Hampton on May 10, 10 12:16 PM
if you are so fired up by the latinos razza, why don't YOU go to 7-11 and copy some license plates down and advertise that they employ illegal aliens. Why don't you do something instead of talking pointless and gutless trash.

Deport them ALL. Not by ethnicity or race, but by lack of documentation. I don't care if they are Irish, Polish, Italian, Australian,French, German, Canadian or Latino send them back from whence they came. This is the law and it needs to be enforced.
I'm totally sick of hearing Government Agencies make excuses for why they can't do their jobs, right on down to this Town and it's inability to keep the books straight.

We, as a nation, are under attack from our southern border and it's time for drastic action. Give 24 hours notice and then declare our border a free fire zone, anyone attempting to cross anywhere other than an official checkpoint will be shot. Wack a few illegals and drug smugglers, that will get their attention and stop the flow of criminals.

I love it when the right uses Reagan as a symbol of all they believe in without having understanding of exactly what the man was all about. I am no fan of Reagan, but maybe you should listen to what he had to say about immigration:

School taxes are paid for by residents. If a child goes to a school that means his parents live in the district and either own or rent and have a lease. Therefore, they are contributing to property taxes, either directly or because they pay rent to landlords who, in turn, pay property taxes. Please explain how that is a free ride?

As for increases in disease, that is one of the most ignorant, racist, fear-mongering statement I have heard since WWII

Did you contact Code Enforcement? If what you say is true there are clear violations of code and they will send out someone to investigate. We had a similar problem on our street and Code Enforcement helped out. Regardless of ethnicity, you should not have to put up with over-crowding and sanitation issues.
If at all possible, ask your neighbors to do the same.
By double standard (1506), quogue on May 13, 10 10:50 AM
True and not true. When taxes are based on single family zoning, the over-crowding of houses yielding extra students into the school system put uncompensated demand on the district. Factor in english as a second language and the need for more special education and that puts even more strain on the district.
