Altschuler balks; debate with Bishop canceled

Oct 11, 2010 1:55 PM

There might be no local debate for candidates for the 1st District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, as the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons announced Saturday that a Hampton Bays debate scheduled later this month has been canceled.

Campaign workers for Randy Altschuler, the Republican candidate challenging incumbent U.S. Representative Tim Bishop, a Democrat, notified the League on Friday that Mr. Altschuler would not be attending the October 21 debate at Hampton Bays High School, blaming the decision on scheduling conflicts. Mr. Bishop had previously agreed to attend.

Mr. Altschuler, a business owner who lives in St. James, has another event scheduled that day involving retired firefighters, according to his spokesman, Rob Ryan. “It just doesn’t work out on our schedule,” he said.

As of now, there are no debates between the two candidates slated to take place on the South Fork. If one does not occur, it will be the first time the South Fork did not host a debate between congressional candidates for the 1st District seat since Mr. Bishop first ran successfully for office nine years ago, according to Mr. Bishop, a Democrat who lives in Southampton.

The incumbent legislator criticized Mr. Altschuler for not making time for the debate in Hampton Bays, saying it was unusual for a challenger to turn down a debate with the incumbent he or she is seeking to unseat.

“I find it perplexing, if not inexplicable, that he would not make himself available,” Mr. Bishop said. Later, he added, “What’s he going to do if he gets elected? What does this say about his transparency and openness?””

At the same time, Mr. Bishop has yet to commit to a separate debate proposed by another group, the Southampton Citizens Forum, according to a press release the group issued Friday. Mr. Bishop said the two situations are not comparable because the group has a partisan agenda—a charge one member denied.

Mr. Altschuler agreed to two tentative dates for a debate, according to the Southampton Citizens Forum. But Mr. Bishop has yet to say if he will attend.

In an interview on Sunday, Mr. Bishop said there is “an enormous difference” between a debate sponsored by the Southampton Citizens Forum, which he said is affiliated with the Tea Party, and a non-partisan group like the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons. He said his campaign would agree to the debate if it were run by a non-partisan moderator, but Southampton Citizens Forum has made no such guarantee so far.

James Boyd, an East Hampton resident who is in charge of organizing events for the Southampton Citizens Forum, said his group is not affiliated with the Tea Party. He said the Southampton Citizens Forum is made up of concerned residents of all political stripes, including some members of the Tea Party, and that the group is seeking a moderator with no political agenda.

Mr. Boyd said his group was seeking to host a debate at Southampton High School, at which residents would be able to ask questions directly to the candidates. He said he proposed four possible dates in October for the debate, two of which were acceptable for Mr. Altschuler, and none of which were acceptable for Mr. Bishop.

As for the Hampton Bays debate, the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons said its members tried to secure a commitment from Mr. Altschuler’s campaign for several weeks before they were finally denied via a phone message on Friday.

“It is very unfortunate that a significant opportunity for the public to hear the candidates in a face-to-face meeting has been denied,” the League said in an e-mailed statement.”

According to the League, representatives from three local newspaper companies were supposed to pose questions at the Hampton Bays debate: the Press News Group, which publishes The Southampton Press, The East Hampton Press and The Press of Manorville and the Moriches; The Sag Harbor Express; and The East Hampton Star.

The candidates are slated to face off in debates hosted by the television stations News 12 Long Island and WLNY Long Island, which will be recorded and aired sometime before Election Day on Tuesday, November 2, according to Mr. Altschuler’s campaign.

I'm not surprised that Randy chickened out. Every time the tea party is asked to discuss a real issue, they run for the hills. They love to toss inflammatory rhetoric in a frivolous and transparent attempt to distract the public.

Tim has been a good friend to this community and a terrific congressman. Paladino, O'Donnell, and Atlschuler are wrong for America.
By Steven (113), Westhampton on Oct 10, 10 6:54 PM
Apparently not if the Republican candidate can't show-up for a debate. Altschular chickened out of a debate during the primary season also. I'm starting to see a pattern emerging.
By LMVT (52), Shinnecock Indian Reservation on Oct 11, 10 9:22 PM
Yet another teapartier with no ideas afraid of public scrutiny. How can anyone, no matter how angry, support a candidate who made a living sending jobs to India and afraid to face his opponent? Altschuler is wrong for Long Island and wrong for America.
By progressnow (556), sag harbor on Oct 10, 10 7:28 PM
if it isn't the vocal minority. there will be plenty of debates, as if you don't know the differences already. debates are overrated, over rehearsed slogan fests where everyone is afraid to slip up lest they give up the gotcha moment. don't make be giggle. altschuler has a scheduling conflict, but bishop is afraid cuz he doesn't like the host. doesn't sound so sinister after all huh? hahahaha. parrots.

What's even worse is the teapartiers themselves willing to elect the wrong people just to satisfy their own misplaced anger at a changing world. Debates are only overrated if you're candidate is second rate carpetbagger who makes millions at the expense of his fellow Americans. And you teapartiers call yourself patriots. It would be hilarious were it not so tragic. Ditto head

With all due respect to the retired firefighters, he could have easily rescheduled that meeting in order to present himself at a debate for the benefit of the voters of the district.

Not necessarily rescheduled. I believe it's the Retired NYS Firefighters group, of which some of their members live in the district. Versus hundreds of people who live in the district. Makes me wonder where the priorities are.

bishops days are numbered. His pathetic disregard for his constituents is well documented. Randy must be confident in his internal polling that a debate is not necessary. I hope he is right.

spoken like a true bishop supporter. A person who doesn't even know how to add. Bishop is just like you except far more dangerous. He has zero experience in managing anything effectively and spends money like a drunken sailor. The health care bill was a perfect example of him going against what's best for his constituents
By razza5350 (1860), East Hampton on Oct 11, 10 8:46 AM
Seems like you totally believe the Republican Spin we have all been hearing and seeing lately. Just totally overlook his record of accomplishments for our district. In spite of all of the negative spin, I still believe the Health Care Bill is a good thing, and had urged Tim Bishop to support it.
By METCOMedia (116), Hampton Bays on Oct 11, 10 9:56 AM
I am one of those people, but understand the difficulty it had being passed. I am hopeful it will be improved over time. It will be hard to keep the Republicans from trashing it if they regain the majority.

Altschuler made his money at the expense of the people he wants to be elected by, that much is certain. He can't find qualified help on Long Island for OfficeTiger? Just got my medical renewal today. Its up 26%. With that 26% increase my employees can now cover their kids to age 26. Whopee! Too bad none of my employees have kids over 18. Now my employees will have the choice of getting a raise or having me pay for the increased cost of their coverage. Great job on health care reform Timmy. DUMP BISHOP

The raison d'etre of Office Tiger, the company that Altschuler founded, is the exportation of American jobs to cheap foreign labor markets. At present, about 10,000 jobs are being thus outsourced by his firm. He MIGHT be a lousy public speaker; he MIGHT be afraid of trying to justify tea party extremism in public; but I think he just can't afford to have the public made cognizant of his export of American capital and 10,000 American jobs. A person thus ideologically oriented should STAY IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR.

how many American jobs has Bishop outsourced to illegal aliens?
By razza5350 (1860), East Hampton on Oct 12, 10 6:11 PM
None! Our immigration problem started long before Bishop was elected to Congress. Bishop favors immigration reform. The laws on the books now are not working are they? To oppose immigration reform is to say keep things as they are! The Republican spin on the subject is that reform means giving all illegals a free pass to citizenship and opening our bourders to all. This spin is a scare tactic aimed at keeping things as they are.
By METCOMedia (116), Hampton Bays on Oct 12, 10 8:20 PM
It is not the laws that are working, it is the people who are suppose to enforce them. You statement is the equivalent of saying a law against Murder isn't working, because the police won't arrest Murderers. Great logic!
No person in this country illegally should catch a break for having done the wrong thing, they should go to the back of the line! Not get a special express line opened for their criminality!
