To Khalid Rahimi, to taste flavored yogurt for the first time was to taste America.
“When I go back to Afghanistan, I [will] also make yogurt with fruit,” said the 26-year-old Afghan man after visiting Mecox Bay Dairy in Bridgehampton last week on his first trip to the United States. “I would be the first man to produce yogurt with flavors, with fruit,” he said, marveling over the rainbow of possibilities: blueberry, strawberry, maple.
In his homeland, he said, the only flavor available is plain.
Mr. Rahimi, who runs a seasonal ice cream shop in Mazar-i-Sharif, a northern provincial city in Afghanistan, said his goal is to return to Haji Abdul Rahimi Ice Cream Shop, which he inherited at age 18 from his father, and expand its menu by using modern equipment... more
