This past summer, Michael B. Jordan took a trip to Springs School to shoot some hoops and pose for a Vanity Fair magazine spread. Mr. Jordan is popularly known for his leading role in “Black Panther,” the world’s ninth-highest-grossing film of all time.

Released in February 2018, the “Black Panther” film grossed over $1.3 billion at the box office, while the 31-year-old actor made headlines for starring in one of the first primarily African American-cast Marvel Studio productions. However, in between making headlines in Hollywood, modeling and his quickly rising stardom, Mr. Jordan found time to stop by the quaint Springs hamlet of East Hampton for a photo shoot.

Superintendent Debra Winter said this week that she had been “ecstatic” to have Mr. Jordan at the Springs School for the shoot, whose photos now grace the November cover and inside pages of Vanity Fair. “In between changing sets, he would play basketball,” said Ms. Winter while flipping through the magazine in her office on Thursday. “That’s another reason they wanted to do a shoot here, because he loves basketball.” She pointed to a photo of Mr. Jordan, dressed in a red Vuitton dress suit, dribbling a ball on the Springs School’s outdoor basketball court.

According to Ms. Winter, Cass Bird, the photographer for the shoot, vacations in Springs.

“Unbeknownst to me, Vanity Fair was searching for a staging area for this shoot,” Ms. Winter said; Springs School turned out to the primary location, although some photos were also shot at Maidstone Beach.

“She really liked the school, and the brick facade,” Ms. Winter said of Ms. Bird. One photo shows Mr. Jordan leaning against a brick wall at the school. The Vanity Fair crew drove a blue Chevrolet El Camino to the school as a prop. Photos were taken of Mr. Jordan in the El Camino with the white and green Springs School building in the background.

The crew took over the school for the day, using the classrooms as dressing and makeup rooms, the hallways to store props, and other rooms for what Ms. Winter described as a really good lunch.

“He was so nice while he was here,” she said. “The photo crew liked the shower area [in the school’s locker room], but didn’t end up using those photos.”

Ms. Winter noticed that Springs School is barely mentioned in the article, except for a small note expressing special thanks to the Springs Union Free School District.

Mr. Jordan’s arrival and photo shoot were kept a secret—even to staff members, parents and students, Ms. Winter said. “I wasn’t allowed to tell people he was going to be here.”

"It would not have been possible without the blessing of the BOE, cooperation of our teachers who gave up their rooms while preparing them for school to start and our custodians who worked so hard to get our gym and grounds ready to be photographed," Ms. Winter added.

Now that the Vanity Fair story is published, Ms. Winter said, she is proud to announce the news to all.

This is the second time this year that Mr. Jordan made the cover of Vanity Fair. Next he will star in “Creed II,” in theaters November 21; it will be the second time he plays a lead in a major mainstream franchise.

Hard to believe he's 55, he looks great. Space Jam was one of my favorite films as a child.
