The fire that killed William Bauer, 78, a disabled veteran living at the Cozy Cabins in Wainscott on Friday evening, left residents who live in neighboring units shaken.
Mr. Bauer was living in the complex—which has numerous long-term residents—with a stepson who has not been identified by authorities.
“I was scared,” said Ryan Bollman, who lives in a cabin a few feet from the cottage that was destroyed in the fire that sent flames shooting 15 to 20 feet into the night sky. Mr. Bollman said he could feel the heat of the blistering blaze in his own home. “It felt like it was 85 degrees inside. It was intense,” he said.
