UPDATE: 1 p.m. Thursday

Montauk Highway was reopened in both directions, after fire crews stanched the gas leak.

The cause of the leak was still being investigated.

A gas leak at a restaurant in Wainscott forced the closure of Montauk Highway about noon on Thursday.

The smell of gas inside the Osteria Salina restaurant, at the intersection of Montauk Highway and Wainscott Stone Road was reported shortly after noon.

Because of the threat of an explosion, emergency responders blocked traffic on both nearby roads while firefighters investigated the cause of the leak.

Officials on the scene said that it appeared that someone or something had struck the property's gas meter, causing the leak.

The highway remained closed as of 12:45 p.m. on Thursday.

I believe it’s called Georgia’s creek restaurant and lounge now. Thanks to the volunteer fire and ambulance for their service.
