Frederick Bertrand of Water Mill died at Southampton Hospital on May 10. He was 87.
Mr. Bertrand was born in Brooklyn on May 29, 1927, to Frederick and Kathleen Bertrand. He graduated from Hempstead High School and joined the United States Navy in 1945. On October 22, 1949, he married Ruth Krummel.
Mr. Bertrand worked for the Long Island Lighting Company as a lineman and then a foreman of emergency services on the East End, a career that spanned 40 years. He was an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying boating and fishing and working his large vegetable garden. Survivors said he also enjoyed spending time with his large family and many friends.
Mr. Bertrand is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth; children, Fred Bertrand and wife Regina of Water Mill, Pamela Giacoia and husband Vincent of Hampton Bays, Scott Bertrand and wife Christina of East Hampton, Peter Bertrand and wife Josephine of Bridgehampton, Susan Bock and husband Tim Bock of Springs, Sally Cope and husband Kevin of Broadalbin; 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Laurie Bertrand Weber.
The family gathered at the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton on May 12. A funeral Mass was held on May 13 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Poland Church in Southampton. Burial followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
