Two construction workers injured in fall after scaffolding collapse in Water Mill

Feb 17, 2010 8:41 AM

Two construction workers were injured in Water Mill on Monday morning after falling 20 to 25 feet to the ground when scaffolding collapsed beneath them.

Southampton Town Police and Southampton Volunteer Ambulance responded to the scene at 121 Cobb Isle Road where the injured men, Michael Haynia, 47, and Carlos Rendernos, 26, both of Riverhead, had been working on the construction of a new house. Mr. Haynia and Mr. Rendernos are employees of Cedar Design, Inc. in Hampton Bays, the subcontractor for the building project. The general contractor was Cardel Development, LLC of Bridgehampton.

The collapse occurred at around 10 a.m.

The metal scaffolding had been secured between two ladders, according to Detective Sergeant Randy Hintze.

Southampton Fire Department volunteers assisted in setting up a landing zone in the Flying Point Park parking lot for a Suffolk County Police Medevac helicopter to airlift one of the victims to the hospital. Medics later decided not to use the helicopter, and both men were transported by ambulance to Southampton Hospital. Mr. Rendernos was treated and released in “good” condition the same day, while Mr. Haynia was transferred to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where was still undergoing treatment as of Tuesday. Mr. Haynia’s condition was listed as stable.

The cause of the scaffolding collapse is under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, police said.

Hope that they were not seriously injured.

It is because of the dangerous nature of doing work at a elevation that NY passed its scaffold law:

At a fall from 13.8 feet, with acceleration due to gravity, a body at the time of impact is travelling at a speed of 20 mph. Not as bad as a fall from 20 to 25 feet, but still really hurts, and depends how you land.

I guess I will be the one to ask the question that everyone wants to ask, but for some reason they don't. Were these workers "illegal" immigrants? If they weren't I would hope that the G.C. required his sub to provide the necessary insurace certificates and then those 2 men should be taken care of and compensated for their injuries and losses. If they were illegal then everyone involved, G.C., Sub, and the 2 workers should all be screwed. As a sub myself I refuse to put the homeowner in jeopardy ...more
