Discover Watermill Day Returns With An Afternoon Of Art And Family Fun

author on Aug 4, 2016

On Sunday, August 14, the Watermill Center will once again host its annual Discover Watermill Day with exciting, innovative art pieces for visitors of all ages to explore.

This event allows guests to freely wander the center’s 8.5-acre property and interact with site-specific performances and art installations that are set up throughout the gardens, woods and open areas of the grounds. They can also tour the building's interior to view ancient artifacts that were collected over the past 50 years by the center’s founder and artistic director, Robert Wilson.

Children's arts and crafts workshops, family activities and guided tours of the artifact collection and grounds will also be available throughout the afternoon for guests to enjoy.

The performances and installations were created by more than 100 artists from more than 30 countries who were part of the center's International Summer Program. These program participants had the opportunity to spend five to six weeks at the center to grow as artists and create new works, all while under the guidance of Mr. Wilson. The participants, as well as Mr. Wilson, will be in attendance at Discover Watermill Day to interact with visitors and answer any questions.

These experimental art pieces are not only meant to challenge the viewers' understanding of art, but also give them a sense of the center's mission—to offer a supportive environment that fosters creative, artistic exploration and expression.

Many of the pieces were featured at the center's FADA: House of Madness" 23rd annual Watermill Summer Benefit and Auction on July 30, but there will also be new pieces unique to this event.

Discover Watermill Day will take place on Sunday, August 14, from 3 to 6 p.m. at The Watermill Center. Admission is free and open to the public. Advance reservations are required for the tours and can be made by calling 631-726-4628.
