A group of young people crawled through a smoke-filled room in Westhampton Beach on Saturday to save a child’s life.
While their heroic mission was actually a drill conducted inside the Westhampton Beach Firehouse on Sunset Avenue, and the “victim” was just a volunteer, the techniques and skills employed by the teenagers could prove to be critically important in the event of a real-life fire emergency.
Members of the Westhampton Beach Fire Department’s Junior Firefighters Program braved the season’s first snowfall on Saturday and turned out in full force for the drill, which was being shot on video with an eye toward educating other young firefighters-to-be nationwide.
