The Westhampton Beach Board of Education has appointed a new assistant principal to serve at both the elementary and middle schools this week, roughly two months after the former assistant principal unexpectedly resigned.
Maria Dorr, a current supervisor of the English Language Arts, Reading and English as a Second Language Department for the South Huntington School District, will be taking over the position effective December 3 with a starting salary of $105,000 per year. On Monday night, board members approved the appointment, 6-1, with Gordon Werner casting the lone dissenting vote.
According to Michael Radday, the superintendent of schools, Ms. Dorr, a Baiting Hollow resident, has 10 years of teaching experience as a reading specialist and also spent time as a coordinator of reading and compensatory services for the Rocky Point School District.
The position at Westhampton Beach became available in early September when board members accepted the resignation of Brian Naughton, who had joined the district the year before. It is unclear why Mr. Naughton chose to leave the district.
“The Westhampton Beach School District is pleased to have Ms. Dorr join our administrative team,” Mr. Radday wrote in an email on Tuesday. “She brings extensive teaching and administrative experience, especially in the areas of reading and ESL. She will be a great resource for our students and faculty.”
