ORIGINAL STORY

Former Westhampton Beach Village Mayor and World War II veteran Arma “Ham” Andon died this week. He was 97.

Mr. Andon was well known in the Westhampton area, having served as mayor from 1986 until 1994. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army until he was wounded and returned home in 1945. During his time on the East End, Mr. Andon served as the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5350 for nearly two decades, was an active member of the Rotary Club of Westhampton, and served as a fire commissioner for the Westhampton Beach Fire District, among his many accolades.

“He made a difference wherever he went,” Bill Hughes, the current commander of VFW Post 5350 said on Thursday. “He was one of those guys who made a difference for the better and he was generous beyond what the average person might know about because he did things quietly. He was just a great example of how a human being should live, a fantastic example.”

Services for Mr. Andon are expected to be conducted through Follett and Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach, though they have not been scheduled yet.
