William Edward Max of Remsenburg died on December 21, 2016, after a brief illness. He was 87 and worked a hectic day right up to several days before he died.
Mr. Max, known as Bill, or Willy to his closest friends, grew up in Baldwin, graduated from Duke University with a degree in economics, and did two tours as a U.S. Army Ranger in the Korean War, and was awarded the Purple Heart. His lifelong friends from his military service, as well as his most recent friends, will recall his mischievous spirit, good times, and good nature.
Mr. Max married Elizabeth “Liz” Winkler-Prins in 1959 and they embarked on an adventurous and exciting life of travel and spontaneity. They developed roots in Remsenburg, where he enjoyed tennis and the Westhampton Yacht Squadron.
His early work in the family kitchen and bath business in Baldwin led to a long and successful career as president of a building products company, creating many relationships that extended far beyond business dealings.
His passion for fun adventure and knowledge were well known among family and friends, survivors said.
Mr. Max is survived by three children, Gary and wife Katherine of Washington State, Bradley and wife Valerie of Armonk, and Darcy Max Watson of Florida; and four grandchildren, Erica, Andrew, Ethan and Steven.
A memorial service took place at Westhampton Yacht Squadron on December 28.
