The Westhampton Beach girls 4x400-meter relay team won a silver medal at the New York State Indoor Track Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.

The squad of senior Kayla Berman, junior Maeve Murphy, sophomore Julia Smith and freshman Maureen Duffy finished in 4:00.70, after winning the preliminary race in 4:00.76 to qualify for the finals. The team actually finished third in the race, but with Medgar Evers, a private college preparatory school, winning the gold medal, the Lady Hurricanes were second among New York State public schools—they took home a bronze medal in the Federation, which encompasses all schools, private and public, in the state.

Westhampton Beach senior Laurence Barr-Forget and junior Juan Lasso competed on the boys side. Barr-Forget, who set a new school record of 14 feet 6 inches in the pole vault earlier this season, was unable to post a height at the state meet. Had he matched his school record it would have placed him somewhere around sixth or seventh place this past weekend. Lasso placed ninth in his 1,000-meter race in 2:30.43.

Multiple Westhampton Beach athletes are expected to compete in the New Balance Indoor Nationals, which are this weekend at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.
