Police Arrest Westhampton Beach Man In Fatal Hit-And-Run On Sunday

Feb 12, 2019 2:29 PM

A Westhampton Beach man was arrested over the weekend after Suffolk County Police said he fled the scene of a one-vehicle accident in Coram that claimed the life of a Westhampton man early Sunday morning.

At approximately 4 a.m. Sunday, Cruz Emelio Tum-Tipaz, 25, crashed his 2005 Nissan Murano into a metal utility pole near Homestead Drive in Coram, killing one passenger and seriously injuring another, according to police.

Juan Morales Cuterez, 28, of Westhampton was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office. The other passenger, Eledao Bolaj-Garcia, 53, of Westhampton, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

According to a press release on Sunday, Mr. Tum-Tipaz fled the scene of the accident on foot, heading north through a nearby parking lot.

He was later identified by police and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, a felony. He was arraigned on Monday, February 11, at 1st District Court in Central Islip. His bail was set at $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond, and he is due back in court on Friday, February 15, according to Sheila Kelly, the director of communications for the Suffolk County district attorney’s office.
