Doris M. (Mitchell) Towers died at the Westhampton Care Center on October 24, 2019, She was 91 and had Alzheimer’s disease.
Mrs. Towers was born on September 13, 1928, in Stratford, New Jersey, to Allen and Elizabeth Mitchell. She married Richard B. Towers, known as “Dick,” in 1948. They lived in many places while her husband served in the military, including in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. They eventually settled in Westhampton Beach to raise their family, a place she called home for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Towers loved music and was an accomplished cellist, survivors said. She was active in her community, serving for many years as a Girl Scout leader. She was a generous and witty lady whose door was always open to her children’s friends and any stray animal who wandered in, according to survivors, and she was passionate about her church and was an active member at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her children, Tim and wife Rosey, Lori Wilder and husband Keith; and granddaughter, Karlyn Sabo, all of Westhampton Beach. She is also survived by nephews, extended family, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years; her parents; and her sister, Aileen Young.
A memorial service will take place on Friday, November 1, at 10 a.m. with a deacons’ reception to follow at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O’Connell-Rothwell Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach.
