Joseph Paul Kommer of Westhampton Beach died at his home on August 20. He was 59.
Mr. Kommer had resided in Quogue, Quiogue and Westhampton, raising his son, Sean, in the area. He was a housepainter until infirmity prevented him from working. Survivors said he will be remembered for his kindness and generosity, and for repeating the mantra “love, love, love” at every opportunity.
Mr. Kommer attended Long Island Lutheran High School and was known as a top athlete, lettering and earning awards in any sport in which he competed. On the East End, he was a lifeguard at Quogue Beach Club, serving almost 10 years and becoming one of the “local surfers” of the area.
He suffered from chronic illness and complications of alcoholism, which finally took his life quietly at home.
Mr. Kommer is survived by his wife, Gretchen; and a son, Sean; his parents, Vincent and Helen Kommer of Quiogue; and five siblings, Frank, Holly, Geary, Vincent and Jok.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 27. For details or to post condolences, look for his page on Facebook.
