Brooks N. Edwards
Brooks “Barney” N. Edwards of Westhampton Beach died at home on January 3, with his wife of 42 years, Joan “Moonie” Edwards, beside him. He was 91.
Mr. Edwards was a fixture in his neighborhood, known to many of his neighbors for his daily walks around the village, an adored routine that he continued until a month before his death. He was known as a genial man who greeted people with sincere warmth as well as a zestful and sometimes irreverent humor.
Born in 1923 in Ilion, New York, Mr. Edwards grew up in Garden City and spent summers in Remsenburg. He graduated from the Gilman School in Baltimore in 1942, then from Princeton University with a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1946. During World War II, he served a tour as an officer in the U.S. Navy. He was particularly proud of co-owning his architecture firm, Edwards and Malone PC, in Garden City. His wife said that his work demonstrated his independent spirit and attention to detail.
Mr. Edwards enjoyed boating, clamming and walking through the changing seasons in Westhampton. The simplicity, purposefulness and thoughtfulness of these activities were characteristic of his life, according to his wife.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Edwards is survived by a nephew, John B. Edwards and family of Garden City; and a niece, Pamela Patterson of California. Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.
