Four will vie for two seats on Westhampton Beach board

May 20, 2009 3:25 PM

The Westhampton Beach election season is turning out to be a dicey one, as the two incumbents seeking reelection are trying to distance themselves from current Mayor Conrad Teller.

Trustees Joan Levan and Hank Tucker are both seeking reelection as members of the new Lightning Party. They said they picked that name in order to distinguish themselves from the First Hampton Party, the banner that both ran under when winning their respective seats in 2007. Mayor Teller also ran for his mayoral seat as a member of the First Hampton Party in 2006 and won reelection as a member of the party last June.

“The First Hampton Party ... is very much associated with his name,” Ms. Levan said of Mayor Teller. “And we want to make it clear that we have our own set of opinions and don’t always agree with him.”

Ms. Levan and Mr. Tucker are being challenged by political newcomer Stephen Arrasate, who is running on the Osprey Party, and former trustee candidate Elyse Richman, who is running under the Shock Party banner.

Mr. Arrasate currently serves on the Westhampton Beach Village Architectural Review Board, a position that he would have to relinquish if voted in next month, and is a retired Southampton Town Police officer. Ms. Richman owns the Shock, Baby Shock and Shock Ice Cream stores on Main Street in the village. She ran as a write-in trustee candidate last year after her petitions were declared invalid.

Mayor Teller said Wednesday morning that he is supporting Mr. Arrasate’s candidacy. Earlier this month, Mayor Teller was asked during a Village Board meeting why his wife, Catharine, was helping Mr. Arrasate get the 50 signatures necessary to appear on next month’s ballot. The mayor declined to answer questions directed at him during the meeting.

Mr. Arrasate said that, if elected, he will bring a cohesiveness to the board. “I want to get rid of the controversy and work together instead of separately,” he said.

Ms. Richman said she will keep the interests of Main Street business owners in mind as she campaigns this year.

The village election will be held on Friday, June 19, in Westhampton Beach Village Hall. Voting will run from noon until 9 p.m. The deadline for filing petitions with Village Clerk Kathy McGinnis was 4 p.m. on Friday.

Ms. Levan was appointed to the Village Board in 2006 by Mayor Teller to fill the trustee seat he vacated when he successfully ran for mayor that year. Ms. Levan and Mr. Tucker then ran together as members of the First Hampton Party in 2007, when they both won their current two-year seats.

But Ms. Levan and Mr. Tucker said they disagree with Mayor Teller on certain village issues, prompting them to distance themselves for the mayor and his party this election cycle.

Mr. Tucker added that he does not agree with how Mayor Teller is handling contract negotiations with the Westhampton Beach Police Department. The village’s current contract with the Police Benevolent Association, the union representing the police department, expires on May 31. Also, Westhampton Beach Police Chief Ray Dean’s contract expired on January 1 and is currently being renegotiated.

Mr. Tucker, who owns Holey Moses Cheesecake, said he also found fault with the way Mayor Teller handled the Hampton Synagogue’s application for an eruv, a proposed religious boundary that would have been used by Orthodox Jews in Westhampton Beach. Specifically, Mr. Tucker said he objected to the mayor’s attempt to try to push for a vote on whether to approve the application for the boundary during a meeting last summer.

“He wanted us to handle the eruv right then and there,” Mr. Tucker recalled.

This year, Mr. Tucker said that he and Ms. Levan, who also serve together on the Westhampton Free Library’s Board of Directors, are going to run on their respective records. Ms. Levan said she is looking forward to completing work on the passive park on Glover’s Lane and Mr. Tucker said he will continue working to improve communication between the village’s boards and local businesses.

“I think we got a lot accomplished and got a lot done,” Mr. Tucker said.

"Twitter" is a further stake in the very soul of decent communication, and any female who can no longer wear a bikini shouldn't be "twittering."

I don't think it's happenstance that the root-word of the new technology is "twit."

I have a question for Frank & Matt.. How much do you weigh and can you still wear a Speedo??? I didn't think so. I have seen you both and you two have a lot of nerve making those sexist comments to a wonderful community member who is solely running for a political office not Miss USA. You both should be ashamed of yourselves. Now grow-up you two!
By Long Island (2), muttontown on May 17, 09 5:18 PM
WHAT?!?!?

Further evidence of the dumbing down of our society thanks to things like "twitter" and "texting."

Anyone who thought that my Comment about "twittering" was directed at Mrs. Richman, is a hysterical moron!
By Frank Wheeler (1790), Northampton on May 18, 09 12:25 AM
Frank
If your comment that any female who can no longer wear a bikini shouldn't be "twittering" wasn't directed at Mrs. Richman then who was it directed to?!
You need to find better things to do with your time than to make derogatory remarks at someone who will be a welcome additon to the Board of Trustees of Westhampton Beach.

By Carolyn T (1), Plainview on May 18, 09 10:24 AM
It was directed at "twittering" and the dumbing down of society through shorthard communications!

I guess that's why over 14 million people are signed up to use twitter, I wish I thought of it first, Like I said Richman for Trustee,

And 14,000,000 people -- primary giddy teenagers who have trouble speaking let alone writing a complex sentence -- can't be wrong, can't they, Ms. Richman?

It will be interesting to see if you can succeed this time around running a "Twitter Campaign." The best of luck to you.

THREE COPS as Trustees of the Village of Westhampton Beach… brilliant! With a Police Department that’s responsible for $3M of the $8M Village budget. One Trustee Candidate who hosts a high dollar poker game on Wednesday nights, where the Chief of Police and former “resident” Tim Laube, plot Village politics. A second Trustee Candidate who’s the single largest headache for Village Code Enforcement and the Village Attorney and is at odds with every other merchant on Main Street. Resident - please check your facts. Three cops as trustees, currently the Mayor is the retired Chief and the other Mr. Kametler should never have been elected in the first place; by my count that's two. As for the qualifications of the current Chief of Police the diplomas on his wall speak for themselves.

Are they going to pay our share of the $8,000,000 library?

I am SO angry at having that huge library, a testiment to keeping up with the Joneses, NOT the Times, I could just scream. We have only Levan and Tucker to assign responsibility for shoving that fugly frame building down our collective throats.

They spent OUR money like we were made of it.

Your spelling errors and your blithe lack of knowledge as to village affairs are a testament to your ignorance. Please do not comment on matters which you obviously know little about; the fact that you would comment on Annona overlooking a car dealership while trying to portray it as some kind of scandal, is just pure idiocy.
