Christie's will host a wine auction

author27east on Jun 2, 2009

Christie’s will host its first-ever “Hamptons Sale of Fine and Rare Wines” at the Atwater Estate in Westhampton Beach on Saturday, June 6.

Wine prices will range from $500 to $15,000. The sale will offer a broad selection of blue-chip wines, including recent vintages and older classics. Of particular note are selections from three private collections that include well-priced, top-quality wines from Burgundy, the Rhone Valley, Champagne, Alsace, Spain, Italy, Germany, California, Portugal, Australia and Austria.

Included in the auction items will be a rare 1929 magnum of Moët & Chandon champagne autographed by Tina Fey, Robert Downey, Jr. and Matthew Broderick. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Motion Picture and Television Fund.

Among the many other wines featured in the sale will be two impériales (6-liter bottles) of Newton Epic merlot and Newton Puzzle cabernet from the 1997 Napa Valley vintage.

In addition, an artist-designed wine tasting bar recently commissioned by Newton, and created from 100 percent reclaimed materials, will be on display and available for purchase via silent bid. Proceeds from the sale of the custom piece and the Newton auction lots will benefit Global Green USA.

The Atwater estate is for sale and is being listed by Marcia Altman of Brown Harris Stevens, an exclusive affiliate of Christie’s Great Estates. The property stretches across more than 1,000 feet of coastline on Quantuck Bay in Westhampton Beach and the house was originally built for coal baron William C. Atwater between 1900 and 1903. He commissioned the celebrated Beaux Arts architect Henry Bacon of McKim, Mead, & White, best known for his design of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, to design the home.

The wine sale will take place at the estate’s carriage house, which offers views of the bay and the estate’s lawn and gardens. During the sale, registered bidders will enjoy an outdoor reception sponsored by Newton Vineyards of Napa Valley, California.

The auctioncatalogue is available at www.christies.com. For more information, visit bhshamptons.com.

Hamptons Rental Market Remains Alive and Well

To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of the demise of the Hamptons summer-rental market are greatly exaggerated. “Any hint that the Hamptons rental market is anything but robust is completely wrong,” said Corcoran associate broker Gary DePersia in East Hampton. An interesting dynamic is stirring in the Hamptons vacation-rental market. Although there has been an unprecedented rise in short-term rentals and the aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic linger, it has been a bumper crop year for Wall Street, interest rates have remained steady and a new breed of demanding customer is emerging. Despite it all, the Hamptons vacation-rental market remains as ... 19 Jun 2025 by Joseph Finora
