Westhampton Beach man accidentally shot in Calverton

Aug 18, 2010 12:04 PM

A Westhampton Beach man was rushed to the hospital Sunday evening after another man accidentally shot him in Calverton, police said.

Riverhead Town Police said Corey Whitney, 36, was at the Calverton Court home of Ryan R. Rose, 36, shortly before 5 p.m. when Mr. Rose accidentally shot him with a firearm.

In a press release issued on Monday, Riverhead Town Police did not say what type of firearm Mr. Rose had used, or explain how he mistakenly shot Mr. Whitney. Police did not return a call seeking comment this week.

Mr. Whitney was found lying on the front lawn of the residence, suffering from a single gunshot wound to his “lower pelvic area,” police said.

Members of the Wading River Fire Department ambulance transported Mr. Whitney to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released, police said.

Riverhead Town Police said they arrested Mr. Ryan at the scene and charged him with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, as well as fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree reckless endangerment, both misdemeanors.

Police said they recovered several firearms from Mr. Rose’s home and are continuing to investigate the shooting.
