Police: Melee draws large crowd in Westhampton Beach

Aug 18, 2010 1:32 PM

A slew of police officers converged in downtown Westhampton Beach on Tuesday night to break up a fight that drew a crowd of as many as 50 people, according to Westhampton Beach Police Lieutenant Trevor Gonce.

The fight began shortly before 11 p.m. in the municipal parking lot off Parlato Place, near Main Street, Lt. Gonce said. Some subjects scattered when police arrived, resulting in several chases on and around Main Street, he said.

Lt. Gonce said police could not determine how the incident started, or exactly how many people were involved. By some accounts, as many as 50 people had gathered in the parking lot to either participate in or witness the fight, he said.

Five teenagers were arrested at the scene and charged with disorderly conduct, a violation, police said. Those arrested included: a 17-year-old from East Quogue; a 16-year-old from East Quogue; a 17-year-old from East Moriches; a 19-year-old from East Moriches; and a 17-year-old from Flanders. They were released on appearance tickets, Lt. Gonce said.

One of the suspects suffered minor injuries and was transported by Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, Lt. Gonce said.

Nine police vehicles from the Westhampton Beach, Quogue, Southampton Town and New York State police departments responded.

Wow! Kids needed something to do I guess. There is not anywhere in the local area for kids/teens to hangout at now that Westhampton Bowl has closed down. Nice job by the Cops to handle this situation.

Maybe if the gov. providied more jobs for the youth they would have somthing productive to do
By local 84 (333), riverhead on Aug 18, 10 7:39 PM
maybe if "the youth" actually went out to look for a job, instead of waiting for it to be "provided" for them.

Whats the point of having a village PD when you have 18 other PDs come in for assistance on a teenage brawl. Time to disband these village PDs. Leave the parking tickets to the rent a cops!!!!!!!!!!
By GoldenBoy (333), EastEnd on Aug 19, 10 1:36 AM
50 teenagers and you don't know if any of them have weapons? Would you respond to that call alone? By the way, without the local police, you'd have to count on the one sector car that covers a huge sector to be available to respond. Let's look at the bright side: no one was hurt.

Now, here's an idea. These kids with their attitudes, baggy pants and such. You tell them, not only is there a 9pm curfew--but you have to be in bed by 10pm. That would solve this problem of unruly teens, and maybe if they got a little more sleep, they wouldn't be so darn grumpy. Just an idea...
By Manorville Major (16), manorville on Aug 19, 10 8:25 AM
Yeah...have them hike up their pants...that'll stop the brawling!
By Hambone (505), New York on Aug 19, 10 11:34 PM
Okkk Age is really starting to show... Baggy Jeans went out 2-3 years ago. It's skinny leg jeans now.. But one's attire and bed time will certainly make a difference if a brawl is going to occur.... Yes SIR!

By nylajen (8), Bayshore on Aug 24, 10 8:33 PM
by baggy jeans i think they mean these fools who walk around with their pants halfway down their a**. this hasn't "gone out"- maybe you should "go out" more often- maybe to the (shudder) scary part of town.

and for the idiots with the underwear hanging out- PULL UP YER DAMN PANTS

Hey manorville major, what were you doing when you were their age? Ill admit it i was out late getting in fights and all the other good stuff but i learned from my mistakes. i think the problem is lack of parenting!

Tell me what generation hasn't had a fair share of fighting. It's been going on, and will continue to go on for years. Just hope your kid is smart enough to avoid the nonsense.

BTW Manorville Major - not all kids are baggy pant wearing punks with attitudes. Most are good kids that go about their business and never get noticed. However the trouble kids always stand out more.

Hey Bayman,
Having a job is a basic necessity. It’s a simple human right.
In fact, the right to a job is a matter of law—and has been for 62 years!
The 1946 Employment Act and the 1978 Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act legally obligate the president and Congress to use all available means to achieve full employment.
whats a matter had enough of the redistrabution of wealth......I say too bad !
Yes We Can!
By local 84 (333), riverhead on Aug 19, 10 2:40 PM
I say too bad you don't have a job. It is your own fault. Go out and earn your way. We working people are tired of supporting the 40% of the population that comes to this country and automatically goes on generous entitlement programs. What would you all have done before FDR's Raw Deal?

By joe hampton (3232), south hampton on Aug 20, 10 1:18 AM
40% I think not.

The reality is these kids were for the most part under 18. What exactly do you want them to be doing (I'll give you not fighting, but WHB is not a town that has a ton of teen employment. The largest employer is the country club)

Leave Walt alone...he's very happy in his double wide posting for a mail order bride
By Hambone (505), New York on Aug 22, 10 12:58 AM
I agree! Thank goodness stats indicate that the majority of those people utilizing those resources such as well fare, food stamps etc are not minorities!!! Also it would be nice if some of the same people "Good Ole' Americans" constantly complaining about illegal immigrants STOP actually hiring to do various jobs. I find it quite interesting that the majority of the people picking up day laborers (illegal immigrants) are White Males, looking for cheap labor.. But yet they are the first to stand ...more

Uh Oh!! I suspect another fight in a parking lot is about to break out. LOL
By pegee (14), Southampton on Aug 19, 10 3:22 PM
Truthfully though,
Due to a lack of activities and high paying jobs, I was thrilled when my sons left the area for college... It opened a new way of viewing things and better opportunities to them.. Perhaps some better alternatives for the young should be researched out here on the East End so that those who remain can set appropriate, realistic goals while learning tolerance and benevolence for others.......

To the Editor-all these previous comments about child employment are inapproriate and have nothing to do with the news item reported. Let's do your job and monitor this site better.

There is a reason why this is called a "forum".

We all sort of diverge, and digress as the article allows. It is an excellent oultet for those who would not ordinarily "meet in the streets", to have an intellectual (we hope) banter regarding not only the story, but relative circumstance.

Respectfully, Z.

And there were people who thought I was "high and mighty".

Let's give a big round of applause to "Manorville Major".

Admittedly, I am fortunate to have my mind, wait, I think I found it, but WOW!

I never really thanked a relative for telling me I wasn't truly suited for the military. Now I think I may know why...

OK what you wrote is pretty inane. So you had a grandfather who was a medic. Big deal. Old major wrote "Now, here's an idea. These kids with their attitudes, baggy pants and such. Typical WHB nonsense. Why don't they name the punks involved? At least the 19 year old from EMO. That will deter the same thing from happening again. I think we need some old fashioned investigative reporting to fill in the blanks
