The partially decomposed body of an unidentified man washed ashore on Plum Island in Gardiners Bay on Thursday afternoon.

According to Suffolk County Police, a private security guard patrolling the perimeter of the federal disease research center discovered the body on a beach at the southwest end of the island at about 4:15 p.m.

The body is that of a man, approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall “with a large build and very long fingers,” according to the description of the body released by police. He was wearing green cargo pants with the words “God Body Collection” inscribed on the buttons, a light green short-sleeved shirt and brown loafers. He was wearing a belt buckle inscribed with the words “Stacey Adams.”

There were no obvious signs of trauma on the body, police said.

The body was taken to the Suffolk County Medical Examiners office in Hauppauge where an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. Police said they do not have reason to suspect foul play behind the death.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad at 852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

The 'very long fingers' thing is kind of creepy...

I am sure when this poor man is identified, his family will not appreciate your offensive comment. I

Please don;t be so critical - it was creepy. What would motivate them to release that detail? They aren't yet asking for the public's help identifying the body. It can only serve to notify the victim;s family in advance of police notification.

The mental image makes me shudder - were his fingers 6" long?

Get a life. Please.

You are right, Mrs. Sea. That was inconsiderate, my apologies to the family of the missing man.
By RealLocal (76), Bridgehampton on Jan 15, 10 4:57 PM
yes, when the police inform them of the passing of their family member they are going to immediately think of some stranger's reaction that their loved one had unusually long fingers, and how that was inconsiderate. You were right to apologize, absolutely.

What was inconsiderate was releasing the detail, if it was not pertinent to the story.

Thank You.

To the uninitiated a decomposed bodies fingers may appear overly long because the flesh has possibly sloughed of the hands exposing the metatarsals (?) .

I would think to make a statement like "very long fingers" they would have to be abnormally long.... I also think the investigators know the difference between decomposition & very long extremities..I would hope so anyway. Funbeer I imagine the same image

Why don't they tell us the color of the skin, White Black, Brown, Light or Dark Instead of the buttons inscription??? Who the hell can identify what the other persons pant buttons say on them?? I noticed this trend on TV also-- if they are looking for a suspect in a crime--all they release is "5-7" medium build" even if they have a composite drawing based on eye witness descriptions.
Don't you think it would narrow down the search if they dropped the Political Correctness and went out on a ...more

Skin color changes at death. Livor Mortis. I had a relative in the Coast Guard retrieve a dead negro from the water and he said it looked White.

The police initially reported that the body was that of a white male but later sent a correction saying the autopsy revealed it to be a black male.

I have a GREAT IDEA, why don't we pick up all sex offenders and bring them to plum island? Maybe we can do crazy experiments on them instead of using real innocent animals. Can we do that?
The worste is that we're paying out of our own pockets for them to "find a home on their own"! Are you kidding me? Why don't we just put a tent in the back of our home and charge them $90 a night! Hahaha No Way! Our children aren't safe with these people roaming our streets. There is no "cure" for these ...more

GE1008, I am not going to argue that sex offenders are a huge issue... but that has NOTHING to do with this story. Lets not start everyone ranting and raving politics when it has nothing to do with this man's death.

Why wouldn't you suspect foul play? He was wearing a short sleeved shirt and loafers. It doesn't sound like kayaking or boating clothes for January now does it? He certainly wasn't running on the beach in long pants and loafers. I bet the cops can't solve this one because they are still trying to draw a chalk mark around the body while it's still in the surfline

No need for further investigation? Why don't they do a blood alcohol content test then at least they can charge him with BWI since thats all they see fit to investigate on LI.
