The Arts & Living sections of the Press News Group newspapers won first and second place prizes for Best Coverage of the Arts, among a variety of other awards, in the 2009 Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the New York State Press Association. The Southampton Press Western Edition won first prize, and second prize went to The East Hampton Press.
Judges’ comments on the Press Western Edition Arts & Living section entries applauded “Appealing diversity of coverage across multiple artistic disciplines, with special mention of visual arts coverage by Pat Rogers.”
Comments on The East Hampton Press entries singled out “Strong use of photography and other visuals. Good attention to narrative and storytelling rather than just event, or things-to-do stories.”
Overall, based on points for first, second and third place awards in all categories the Press News Group had the second highest total of all papers in the state entered in the competition.
