Samuel A. Manarel
Samuel A. Manarel of Cutchogue, whom friends and family knew affectionately as “Red,” died on October 10 at his home. He was 99.
Mr. Manarel was born to Ross and Carolina (née DeFabbio) Manarel in Holley, New York, on July 12, 1911. He graduated from Holley High School, the Brockport Normal School and New York University, earning bachelor of science and master’s degrees in education.
He began his career in education in 1933, when he taught and coached baseball and basketball in Hampton Bays. He refereed basketball and, according to family, organized the first Basketball Referees Association in eastern Suffolk County. He eventually became chairman of the New York State Public High School Basketball Commission.
While in Hampton Bays, he met and married Viola Elverson. In 1939, the couple moved to Westhampton Beach, where he became principal of Westhampton Beach Elementary School.
In 1941, he and his family returned to Hampton Bays and he served as school superintendent there until 1952.
Shortly thereafter, he moved to East Meadow and became principal of Bowling Green Elementary School and soon thereafter became assistant principal of East Meadow High School. In 1966, he retired as assistant superintendent after having served the district for 33 years.
During his retirement, he pursued his passion for fishing and helped to form the Cutchogue Lions Club, becoming the club’s first president. He also chaired the Southold Board of Assessment Review.
Friends and family also noted that he was a lifelong New York Yankees fan.
He is survived by a son, John Manarel of Cutchogue; a daughter, Elizabeth Broderick and her husband Jeffrey of Delaware; a grandchild, Tracy Ann; and two great-grandchildren, Adrienne Jayne Cornett and Devin James Cornett.
His wife of 65 years, Viola Manarel; and two brothers and two sisters predeceased him.
Interment of ashes will be scheduled at a later date.
