Year-end real estate stats show 2008 losses

Oh wait... five years ago every realtor was shouting "buy now or be priced out forever." "Hamptons real estate never goes down." "There is a new pricing paradigm." "Now is the best time to buy real estate." Can a realtor finally be quoted in one of these articles as saying "We were wrong about the market then and we have no basis for knowing about the market in the future."" Jan 22, 09 1:17 PM

Agents try auctions to move property

"The homeowners have agreed to sell for whatever price is brought at auction—above a reserve, or minimum price..."

Hmmm... a desperate gimmick indeed. If you're going to put in a reserve, why bother with an auction? Just list it at the reserve price and see if it sells. I'll betcha it doesn't!" Jan 30, 09 4:22 PM

Bad economy forces some migrant workers home

Well, it sounds like the cross-burners are out here in force today. Yes, illegal immigration is illegal. Yes, they need to take responsibility for themselves. But I think you are missing the point of the article, which is really about the sad state of our economy, especially in the service sector, and the effect it has had on the local population of (illegal) immigrants. Before you start reciting Lou Dobbs, please remember that these are human beings who came here in search of a better life for their families. I am sure any of you would crawl under barbed wire and wade through rushing rivers in order to provide for your families, legal or not." Feb 6, 09 4:25 PM

East Hampton Town will charge residents for beach permits

Oh please, don't get your knickers in a twist. Southampton Town has been charging residents for years. East Hampton is just late to the game." Feb 12, 09 1:26 PM

Real estate market stumbles into 2009

LM, this is par for the course for realtors, who are as morally bankrupt as the Wall Street clientele that they cater to. They will do/say anything to get their commission- 6% for a few hours of paper shuffling and sitting on their wide butts at empty open houses." Feb 12, 09 1:37 PM

East End real estate industry accused of monopoly practices

I suspect that all of this is going to be for naught. The major brokerages are going to get creamed by this downturn in the market and the business model for real estate brokerages will eventually go the way of stock brokers, travel agents, etc. Once people have the online tools they need to buy and sell real estate, e.g., Zillow, only real estate attorneys will be needed. The barrier to entry for real estate agents is pathetically low and, accordingly, they add absolutely zero value to a transaction. If sellers price their properties realistically, buyers will come... Rents on retail space remain the same despite downturn in economy

It must be nice living in delusional la la land. Have these idiot landlords considered that empty storefronts lower property values more than reduced rents? What business in their right mind would open an outlet in a strip with empty stores? And believe it or not, there is this pervasive little thing called the, um, recession that is about to slam the East End this summer in unprecedented ways. But I suppose that doesn't matter to any of these morons because real estate only goes up and up, and they aren't making any more land, etc." Apr 16, 09 10:55 AM

Fred Thiele backs gay marriage bill

Whatever Fred's motivations may be behind his change of heart, I congratulate him for standing up against the party line and doing the right thing. This isn't about "accepting" gays, just as heterosexual marriage is not about "accepting" Christianity. It's simply about equal protection under the constitution. Any and all arguments against gay marriage are legally without merit, and any and all attempts to fight it, especially the insistence on "civil unions" as an alternative, is nothing more than organized religion's attempt to maintain gays and lesbians as second class citizens. For all of this nonsensical chatter about "defending marriage," why don't you focus your energies on preventing divorce, preventing infidelity, preventing teenage pregnancies, etc. instead? Seems like you have all been abysmal failures in that regard. " May 8, 09 9:28 AM

Man killed in Noyac crash

Hey morons- don't assume it was speed. What part of "...investigators have not determined how fast Mr. Reinoso was going when he lost control" don't you understand? Driving home last night on Noyac Road, I could see that the woefully worn/faded median was practically invisible on a clear night, let alone a rainy night. It would not surprise me if the driver was unable to see the median and losing control. Something as simple as um, re-painting the median strip (as well as more reflectors) would certainly help matters." May 11, 09 3:16 PM

Same-sex marriage bill passes State Assembly

I guess more than anything I am extremely disappointed that in 21st Century America, we still have such backward, knuckle-dragging goons who continue to persecute a contingent of people for no other reason than the hate and darkness in their cold hearts. Per Richard E. Barnes' definition of marriage, all people of non-child-bearing potential should not be allowed to get married, including people with vasectomies, post-menopausal women, etc. And I suppose a child being raised and nurtured in a loving household with same-sex parents is so much more harmful than being repeatedly molested by catholic priests. Glass houses much?" May 14, 09 9:47 AM

Town and school officials are ticked over MTA payroll tax

So what should be the alternative? How about charging increasing the LIRR fare to $50 each way to/from Penn? You can't get something for nothing. Train trips in and out of the East End are heavily subsidize as it is. " May 14, 09 9:54 AM

Same-sex marriage bill passes State Assembly

You people seriously need to take a chill pill re: The Royal "We" comment. His/her comment was clearly tongue-in-cheek and sought to bring to light the parallels between same-sex marriage and interracial marriage (which was also considered a religious abomination earlier in the 20th Century). He/she is underscoring the fact that opposition to same-sex marriage is tantamount to opposition to interracial marriage. If anything, what I find frankly repulsive is the cliched, tired comparison between same-sex marriage and marriage between a human and (insert barnyard animal here). Only a dehumanized, dead-inside, malignantly sick person would derive glee from making such a barbaric, patently absurd, hateful statement." May 15, 09 12:39 PM

Hamptons are still hot

One cheery magazine cover story and the great recession of 2009 has been averted! Woo-hoo! Bottle service for everyone! Who knew it could be so simple? Take that, Obama!" May 15, 09 12:45 PM

Jermain Library officials want $10 million expansion

How about creating permit-only parking zones near the library? Permits would be issued only to those within the Sag Harbor school district (one per household). This would help to ensure that residents within the district would have preferential access to the library." May 15, 09 12:53 PM

Same-sex marriage bill passes State Assembly

Blackjordan, your position is absurd and ignorant. That's just like saying that if you are allowed to marry a morbidly obese woman, then you should also be allowed to marry an elephant or a cow. Sure, three-way marriages for gays should be legal... IF it is also legal for straights. But last time I checked, this sort of arrangement didn't work out too well for the Mormons in Utah. Accordingly, it's not up for discussion, so you really need to give it a rest.

Since you are so obviously terrified by the "tyranny of the minority," exactly what do you think is going to happen? Obviously you choose to be ignorant of history because you are spewing the same ignorant platitudes of those who opposed interracial marriage in the mid 20th century and warned of damnation under God, blah, blah, blah. I'll bet you cannot name ONE negative thing that will happen as a result of enacting marriage equality. Last time I checked, Canada and Massachusetts did not perish in a swarm of locusts and brimstone." May 18, 09 9:18 AM

Supervisor proposes $1 million in budget cuts

Immigrants without work have a lunch benefactor

Thank you, Mr. O'Neill, for taking a brave stand against hate and bigotry (and ignorance). You inspire us all with your kindness and compassion." Jun 30, 09 2:41 PM

Back to the wall, Bay Street prepares an appeal

I can't believe the "local" philistines on here who decry the existence of cultural institutions like Bay Street just because they can't afford it themselves. Do you expect everyone to work for free? Do you think actors, writers, directors and grips should work for free as well? And have you checked out the price of Broadway show tickets lately? Bay Street is easily half the price of Broadway and provides a beautiful, intimate harborside setting. Without the Bay Street theatre Sag Harbor loses a huge chunk of its cultural relevance. Be careful what you ask for." Sep 18, 09 12:38 PM

Best-selling diet book author comes to East Hampton

Well, there certainly isn't anything new here about the health effects of a vegan diet! But regardless of whether or not Mr. Esselstyn's ideas are original, he speaks the truth! We simply eat too much processed crap and animal products. Why bother getting up in arms about healthcare reform if Americans refuse to give up the foods and lifestyle that are killing them in the first place?" Oct 1, 09 3:14 PM

Southampton Town plans housing lottery on October 14

In this day and age when homes can be bought east of the Shinnecock canal for well under $300K (and they're just sitting on the market) at record low interest rates, can we finally put an end to these social engineering experiments once and for all? This economy has effectively created the affordable housing everyone has been asking for." Oct 7, 09 12:58 PM
