Top Residential Water Consumers On South Fork

Quogue Condo Developers Want To Allow Younger Residents In 55 And Over Community

I'd LOVE to move into a 55+ community, and will do so when the time comes. However, it's quite disheartening to see that couples, "many with young children," might be moving in. Isn't there anywhere us childless-by-choice can go for some peace and quiet???" Aug 18, 11 11:53 AM

Group Wants A Say Regarding Proposed Religious Boundary

This, to me, foreshadows the battles taking place over the Kiryas Joel community in upstate New York, which the New York Times has written about extensively. Kiryas Joel grew faster than any other community in New York State between 2000 and 2006 -- and was named "the poorest place in America" in 2011. The Times has lots of great reporting on this for anyone who's interested. " Aug 23, 11 12:19 PM

Teen Night At East Hampton Nightclub Called Exploitive

Please publish a list of dates when Lily Pond will be holding Teen Nights . . . as I will be sure to keep myself and my family off the roads that night. Teen drivers are bad enough, but teen drivers + drugs/alcohol is a vehicular manslaughter waiting to happen." Nov 2, 11 5:35 PM

New Canoe Place Inn Application Filed With Town

Normally I'm against almost all development in the Hamptons, particularly when it's so dense, but Hampton Bays could really stand to benefit from something upmarket to "gentrify" it a bit, and that's exactly what this sounds like. The CPI is an eyesore, and the nightclub there draws a sketchy crowd - seems every summer there's at least one shooting connected to that place. So long as it's landscaped well to hide the density and the buildings aren't overly tall, I think this will be a nice addition to the neighborhood.

Now if we could only bring F.O.O.D. back . . ." Mar 16, 12 10:57 AM

Southampton Town Councilman Says Legal Action Could Be In Rumba's Future

Chief is right: It's a dump. Do you see anyone strolling up and down the street with an ice cream cone the way they do in Sag Harbor? Do you see anyone shopping at the upscale stores, or eating a nice lunch outside, like they do in Southampton? I enjoy all of these things, and even though we live part-time in HB, we spend our leisure time in the "nice" villages. And Hampton Bays isn't one of them." Aug 23, 12 11:22 AM

Pottery Barn Plans To Open Its Doors To Southampton In The Spring

I was really hoping this would be a Williams-Sonoma instead -- there are way more items in there that I might pop in to buy on any given weekend, and their product mix is less competitive with Hildreth's. Still, this is great news and it sure beats an H&M there (which was the rumor for a while!)." Sep 19, 12 11:17 AM

UPDATE: Passenger Dies Following Single Car Crash In Hampton Bays Saturday

A few years ago I, too, had a deer graze my car around midnight, somewhere on Rt. 27 between the PC Richard and Lobster Inn. To this day I have no idea where it came from, as there are few wooded areas on that stretch. Sadly, their habitats have been destroyed by overdevelopment and there's really nowhere else for them to go." Oct 16, 12 2:08 PM

Revised Canoe Place Inn Proposal Is Receiving Mixed Reviews

Hampton Bays resident Larry Fasciano thinks the inn should be leveled and the townhouses should be built there instead. Constructing townhouses on the eastern side of the canal will restrict public access to the waterfront, including the view now enjoyed by diners at Tide Runners.

Mr. Fasciano has the right of it -- with this proposal, the Rechlers get their townhouses, we lose the CPI eyesore, and everyone can still enjoy the waterfront and TideRunners. Why isn't this the proposal being discussed? " Aug 14, 13 1:16 PM

Complaints Over Volleyball Games In Springs Lead To Proposed New Limit

I used to live near a home that regularly held these volleyball games, and I can assure you that nobody – and I mean NOBODY – would be able to stand living near one for very long. This is not a backyard gathering of friends or a Sunday BBQ. It’s not a small party or even a large party. Rather, it is a mass gathering of literally hundreds of people in one backyard, complete with paid admission, blaring music, drinking, parking and trash issues, and of course whooping, yelling, etc. It’s like living next door to a massive outdoor nightclub, which of course residential neighborhoods are not zoned for.

Also, the simple fact is that government can and does regulate what homeowners may do with their own property. NO homeowner has an absolute right to do whatever he wants on his property, despite the (incorrect) assertions of about half the commenters here. Civil and criminal codes regulate noise, occupancy, fire hazards, unsafe conditions, condemnations, construction projects, swimming pool safety, and many other aspects of property ownership. Prohibiting a mass gathering in a residential home is certainly well within the government’s broad power to regulate property ownership, and in this case is certainly a good use of it. Your right to hold mass gatherings in a residential backyard ends where my right to enjoy some peace and quiet begins.
" Aug 20, 13 12:36 PM

You deserve to live right next door to of these volleyball games. I'd love to see you "mind your own business," dismiss it as "trivial," and respect your neighbor's "private property" when it's like living next door to a loud, overcrowded, illegally-operating nightclub that's open 24-7, and you can't get a single moment's peace either inside or outside your own home. Of course, maybe it won't matter since you won't be able to park outside your own house, either, and you'll spend your mornings picking up all the trash that's ended up outside your house or in your yard.

Oh, and your problems will be of "no concern to the majority of the community," so the rest of us will just go ahead and turn a deaf ear to your pleas for some basic civility and code enforcement. :) " Aug 22, 13 1:35 PM
