Springs School District To Offer Spanish Translation At Next Board Of Education Meeting

(1) It's already in English originally, isn't it? No need to translate it from English to English. (2) This is a practical issue, not a matter of political correctness. More than 50% of the student body is Latino (like it or not), and the school district must serve these students. Translation services are needed in order for the district to do this effectively." Apr 6, 16 1:21 PM

You've missed my point. The problem you seem to have is not with political correctness, it's with a much larger underlying issue: illegal immigration. If so, then just say you are tired of illegal immigration rather than throwing out the term "politically correct" just to bash it when it's not even really relevant here. People constantly blame "political correctness" when it's often not the real issue. It's honestly a bit tiring to hear the term overused (and misused) so much." Apr 7, 16 9:38 AM

So why should we expect native Spanish speakers to learn English in one day? I don't understand why people often assume they are not trying to learn English, when most are. People forget that it's extremely difficult to learn a new language, especially as an adult, and it takes time. If we wouldn't hold our grandparents to such impossible standards, why are we holding other people to them?" Apr 7, 16 9:43 AM

Republican Candidate Donald Trump To Attend Fundraiser In Patchogue Next Week

You are right, he is not the typical politician. He lacks any diplomatic tact, is a thousand times more egotistical, and acts like bigoted, racist, and sexist child. He gets so much credit for saying what he thinks, but no one seems concerned that what he thinks (and says) is absolutely awful. The way he treats and talks about women is downright disgraceful. Any time someone says something bad about him, he calls them unattractive or a loser. This is the behavior of a child, not a great leader! Would you teach your children to act like he does? I surely wouldn't. And let's not even talk about what a disaster Trump would be for foreign relations.." Apr 8, 16 7:44 AM

Wow, you clearly don't have any idea how USCIS processes work. And on top of that you make a lot of pretty poor assumptions about both legal and illegal immigrants.

I'm not saying there isn't a problem, just that your view of the situation is overly simplified and clearly biased. I bet you also think a giant wall is a great solution... " Apr 13, 16 2:13 PM

Organizers: Sunday's Black Lives Matter Protest Is First Of Several To Come On East End

The comments on this article are so alarmingly one-sided and seemingly uninformed, so I just wanted to say thanks to those who are trying to speak out against racial injustice in our society. Some of us do understand that BLM is about more than black people being shot by police. Some of us do recognize that there are larger, more complicated issues that must be addressed if we are ever really going to have freedom and justice for all in this country. Some of us do recognize that "all lives matter" rhetoric completely misses the point - of course they do, no one is saying they don't, just asking that black lives be included in "all lives."" Jul 15, 16 8:55 AM

Your comment is completely unrelated to the article. It should be removed." Jul 15, 16 5:25 PM

For the record, I didn't request that your comment be removed, but I do find your use of quotation marks referring to the "people" of the BLM movement deplorable. They are people. No quotation marks, just people.

Also, my name on this website refers to the fact that I'm a resident of Southampton, hence "SH Res," as in resident." Jul 18, 16 10:57 PM

Black Lives Matter Rallies Held In East Hampton And Bridgehampton Sunday

Your comment just shows that you don't understand what the BLM movement stands for, or that you don't understand what the word "racist" means. I am not in any way connected to the BLM movement but can at least respect the core message that is at the heart of peaceful BLM protests such as the ones referenced in this article.

Also, I've lived here my entire life as well and can honestly say that I have witnessed racism in our community on more occasions than I can count. Have you heard the names people call Latinos and other POC? Have you witnessed the assumptions people make about a person of color without knowing anything about that particular individual? Have you heard about the KKK propaganda in Hampton Bays?

These are just a few examples of racism in practice, but if you live here in this community with your eyes open you will see it often. Much of this is ingrained in our society, which is exactly what BLM is trying to point out. All people, including POC, should be treated like equal human beings by other individuals, society at large, and the systems in our society that impact our daily lives.

And as a side note, why is she a "lady" and not a lady? What are you implying? I can't tell if people like you on these comment boards are being intentionally disrespectful or just don't understand the implications of quotation marks." Jul 19, 16 11:42 AM

Exploring The Facts And Fictions Of Lyme Disease On The East End

Not that I'm against deer culls for other reasons, but did you see that part in the article that states "The greatest carriers of Lyme ticks are not deer, but rodents, birds and the wind. Killing and culling deer will do nothing to stop the epidemic."?

Given the number of other animal species that host ticks and Lyme, and the ecology of ticks themselves, what makes you think a deer cull would actually help to reduce rates of Lyme in humans on the East End? " Jul 19, 16 1:49 PM

Black Lives Matter Rallies Held In East Hampton And Bridgehampton Sunday

adczeta don't even bother... when you hear someone equating BLM with a "murder cops crowd," he/she clearly doesn't understand the BLM movement. That's like saying all Christians/Baptists support the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church. It's absurd. It's uninformed.

And to say Obama is the primary cause of what's happening.. ha! I'm pretty sure it's this country's long complicated history of racism, inequality, and injustice. Things have definitely improved over the years but there is still so much progress to be made. Better to focus on that than these people who will never open their eyes, ears, and minds. Let them go and focus on people who will at least try to understand, who at least admit that racism (conscious or not) is a problem our society hasn't tackled yet." Jul 20, 16 11:43 AM

Bayman, I like your comment because it's one that is sensitive and thoughtful, and you acknowledge aspects that make "racism" a complicated concept and loaded word. However, I don't understand how you can remove some form of "racism" from the discourse entirely when what we're talking about is people being discriminated against (intentionally or not) or having different opportunities based on the color of their skin. The issues revolve around race-based inequality, which stems from institutional racism. I agree with you that personal racism like what you describe is not particularly useful to pull into the conversation (and on this board it was Lets go mets who brought the conversation there), but other forms of racism are entirely relevant to the conversation and need to be acknowledged if change will ever be affected." Teen Petitions Boys Scouts To Let Girls Join

Good for you! No reason why we shouldn't have a co-ed Scouts program like in Canada. This would be beneficial in many ways. " Jul 22, 16 8:43 AM

knitter and Funbeer - Why not? There's no reason boys can't take part in the activities Girl Scouts do. And why do we even need two different Scout programs? Or why not have multiple Scout programs assigned by theme rather than gender? When I was young I used to be upset when I was told I had to do certain things just because of my gender. Now that I'm an adult, I still see how women and men are treated differently in certain ways but I at least understand how wrong it is and try to live according to different standards for myself and those around me." Jul 22, 16 5:00 PM

Oops, I did not mean to like your comment. I don't think your completely dismissive response is appropriate or fair. We should be encouraging each other, and especially young people, to think critically about the status quo and question it if they want to. That's what's being done here, and for important reasons. Black Lives Matter Rallies Held In East Hampton And Bridgehampton Sunday

You can't take America out of the conversation. Of course different groups around the world have been and currently are being discriminated against, and that's not right anywhere. But the problem this movement is reacting to is a distinctly American one, tied to the long "history" that makes the boiled down answer a lot more complicated than what you've written here... Your "answer" is directed at POC at an individual level, and while this may be part of the solution, the real answer to this problem will need to involve the rest of society too." Jul 25, 16 9:08 AM

Gene, you're wrong. Phil's comment was deleted but he referenced a politfact article that fact checked this and concluded it was accurate. Also, the White House Historical Association's website also says it's true: "they turned to African American—enslaved and free—to provide the bulk of labor that built the White House, the United States Capitol, and other early government buildings." Black Lives Matter Rallies Held In East Hampton And Bridgehampton Sunday

Erin, BLM supporters admit that all the time. That's the whole point of the movement's name and why "all lives matter" doesn't cut it. There's an implicit "too" at the end. If you are going to come down so hard on this movement you should read up on it a little and try to understand what they're actually trying to achieve, rather than just posting a bunch of insults and alarmist rhetoric on 27east about the "new black panthers" and "refugees" trying to take over our country and oppress us. And the condescending "let me educate you" comment to adczeta seems pretty inappropriate when it's clear you don't have a solid understanding of what BLM is..." Jul 27, 16 8:23 AM
