Storm Brews Over Georgica Beach Fence

The irony here is that the only way to insure that there is absolutely no beach in the future is to try to "protect" it with hardened structures like we see here. Erosion will hit the neighboring properties twice as hard until the owners there feel forced to take action and so on and so on until we have, in essence, a seawall and no sand.

I'm ashamed that our local govt responds faster to shutting down the silly GILT house than an action that threatens the most prized natural resource we have.

Mr. rites comments regarding "protecting what they rightfully own" illustrate the whole problem here. People who live on the beach should not expect to maintain fixed property lines when the ocean is in control and the landscape is constantly moving. Allowing hardening of any kind to stand sets a dangerous precedent that should not be allowed. WHERE IS THE DEC? " Sep 7, 11 10:41 AM

Ruling Could Strip Authority Of Southampton Town Trustees To Regulate Village Beaches

Beg to differ, if erosion gets out of control with the reckless placement of just a few hardened structures there won't be any beach to control access to. " May 14, 12 6:28 PM

UPDATE: Town Encourages Sandbags, Will Revive Beach Rebuild Plans

If you put in steel sheeting it may protect the immediate property behind it but over time the ocean will just remove the sand in front of it guaranteeing there is no beach left. I don't want my tax dollars spent on something that guarantees there is no beach." Nov 5, 12 12:10 PM

Dune Road Breach Widens During Nor'easter

The barrier beaches would still be there without the replenishment that has been done over the years. Maybe not in the same place and with some breaches opening and some closing but still there.
I think its more accurate to say the building has served to try to PRESERVE the barrier beach in its current form like a snapshot when overwhelming natural forces are constantly trying to shift it. Its a losing battle though it will take a hit bigger than Sandy for people to realize you can't outspend nature. " Nov 5, 12 2:54 PM

Trustees, State Question Village Sea Wall Permits

I understand how village mayors throughout the East End are always going to be pressured to make bad decisions in the short term interest of beachfront property owners. My thanks to the Trustees for being there to prevent them. " Mar 20, 13 12:08 PM

Oceanfront Boardwalk Part Of Town Plans For Neptune Property In Hampton Bays

Kill the boardwalk plans. What kind of message does it send to build on top of one of out most important natural assets? Not to mention that it will be damage prone and costly to maintain. What happens if the dunes build up around the boardwalk? Will we keep knocking them down to keep the sand off the boardwalk?" Quogue Dredging Application Draws Questions About Economics

Instead of dredging sand 1 mile offshore, why not use all the sand that has accumulated for years on the inside of shinnecock inlet? That was the sand that was supposed to migrate west anyway and it would help shinnecock bay too. " Dec 13, 13 9:23 AM

Southampton Town Trustees Dealt Another Legal Blow

Holy pot calling the kettle black! If anything epitomizes the need to get rid of duplication, overlap and levels of govt its the microscopic village of Westhampton Dunes within the tiny village of Westhampton Beach! The irony is side-stichingly laughable. " Feb 12, 14 11:58 AM

Questions Remain After First Of Three Forums Focusing On Proposed Quogue Beach Project

Yes the entire village would benefit to some extent but no one more than the beachfront property owners. Unless the beachfront homeowners agree to pay the majority of the cost I don't see this ever even getting to a vote." Jun 24, 14 3:47 PM

UPDATE: PSEG Completed Tree Trimming On County Road 39

On the PSEG website it says:

"We have designed a communications process to make sure elected officials and our customers know when we are trimming trees.
We meet with elected officials in towns and villages before tree trimming begins"

Can anyone find out if this was done?

Gregor Suggests That Southampton Town Abandon Part Of Dune Road

Finally, an official who calls for a prudent an actionable measure to improve water quality rather than another study. Congratulations Mr. Gregor, you just got my vote forever.

The inconvenience of not having the roadway is significant but the health of the bay there is worth the sacrifice. " Oct 15, 14 3:39 PM

Bulkhead Will Be Constructed At St. Andrew's Dune Church In Southampton Village

It could be years or decades before the folly of this bulkhead is laid bare (literally). Part of me hopes to be around when it does for the i told you so factor but that would be overshadowed by the sadness of losing the beach. " Oct 21, 15 5:28 PM

Former Trustee Tells Southampton Town Trustees To Change Leadership Roles

I believe the Trustees all saw this as a 15 yr compromise to guarantee that freeholders would have well maintained access to the water with little cost. I also understand how some feel that the land shouldn't have been given away.

Who benefits more, the dozens (more? less?) of residents who get continued, well maintained access to the water (is that not the job of the Trustees?) or the homeowner who gets slightly more room but is stuck with the bill for continued dredging and maintenance year after year?

Thiele Withdraws Support For Deepwater Wind Project, Says 'Bait and Switch' Has Eroded Trust

Unless they are going to be noticeable bigger I don't see how the same 15 turbines now producing more power is a problem? Are they going to be 44% bigger? Should we be surprised that technological improvements can occur during an approval process that will end up taking, what, a decade?" Jan 24, 19 2:02 PM
