ZBA turns down East Hampton Library expansion

Man, I can tell you a few stories about East Hampton Village politics. The community should step forward and support the library. Screw these political wan-a-bes" Jul 23, 10 7:02 PM

One woman drowns, several rescued at Amagansett beach on Sunday

Mr. Z said it correctly. The ocean has unbelievable power. It will chew you up and spit you out. Don't fear it, just respect it. And yes, I've seen a person drown on a local beach. It only takes a minute. The event produced razor sharp memories that still bother me to this day. Those who were present yesterday and were able to help in some way, should be commended." With deadline looming, radio station still short of funds

I remember what is now WLIU when it started up in the 1970's. Different call letters, different frequency and 10 watts of power. It was at the time operated as a college radio station by students at the Southampton campus. Even though it was a shoe string operation, I could still pick up the station in Sag Harbor. Students operated the station until 2am with programming of their choice.

The college next upped it's power to 150 watts soon afterwards. The station operated out of the basement of one of the buildings on campus. To those old enough to remember, it was similar to the old University of Bridgeport station, WPKN. I suspect there was never carriculum in broadcasting offered at the Southampton campus. Over the years, the station continued to increase it's signal to the the present 25,000 watts, a new tower and broadcast equipment.

I must admit, the station offers a profession sound and high signal quality. The students I remember are long gone. Nowadays they could probably not even hope to get a DJ time slot there as the available slots probably have been filled for years.

The problem is it took deep pockets to keep this station on the air. I believe it was at least 1.5M a year the college was paying towards it's operation. I tuned in 88.3 the other day and noticed a vast difference in signal quality. I suspect the power has been drastically reduced from the FCC authorized 25K watts to save money. Even if a last minute donor comes to the rescue, the yearly operating budget of the station would have to addressed. I personally don't see much hope and suspect it will go silent on August 31st." Plans are afoot to re-purpose Bulova Watch Case Factory

I concur with mo. This whole thing is bull. I remember the place when it was in operation and it's workers. It been closed for over 30 years. These developers never set foot in the place or know exactly what went on there. I have fond memories of Miss Elizabeth Hall, the production supervisor there. Don't tell us about the building's history when you wern't even there. The whole thing is about money. Good luck coming up with the 100 million plus required to restore the old Bulova factory. It will never happen in these times, and I hope it never does." Aug 15, 10 6:11 PM

East Hampton Village to put restrictions on landscaping equipment

East Hampton Village has always had an anti-noise law on the books for excessive noise between the hours of 11pm and 7am. I can see making that 8am, but evenings and Sundays? I thought those kind of restrictions were thrown out by the courts 40 years ago.
Face it, these people don't want to see or hear laborers when they come out to their McMansions, but they sure use their services don't they?" Aug 15, 10 6:59 PM

Helicopter foe girds for battle

I live in Noyac, about .6 miles from the LIPA right-of-way these helicopters use. It is worse on Friday and Sunday afternoons. My family owns a home in Wainscott south where the problem is business jets going over on their approach to the airport.

The airport has been there since the 1930's but the helicopter traffic has gotten worse in the past 3 years. If a law is in effect mandating a minimum altitude, then that should be enforced!" Aug 15, 10 8:47 PM

Vintage cars will take center stage on Saturday in Bridgehampton

I remember 1958 or 1959 standing on a little bank on Millstone Rd. watching the cars in turn 1. Too cheap to buy a ticket. Long gone like the Hampton's Drive-In and other great things of the time." Oct 1, 10 5:00 PM

Saks Fifth Avenue closes Southampton store this past weekend; Water Mill's Citarella also closed

If people continue to patronize these ripoff businesses listed above, they will continue to get away with it. Example, I needed a stick of butter in a hurry recently, so I went to Sag Harbor's only grocery store. They only sell 1/2 pound packages at 2.99 per half pound. I can go to BJ's and buy 4 pounds of butter for 7.99. That same 4 pounds in the Sag Harbor store would cost me almost $24.00 Now tell me, is something wrong here or what?

That's why I make a twice monthly trip to Riverhead. I am not one of those weekenders in their fancy Mercedes who can p*** money away supporting these robbers! " Oct 7, 10 8:34 PM

I see I say things you don't like to hear. Hmm, I wonder why? Your biggest enemy Joe are sites like Amazon, Ebay, Itune's etc. They have wiped out antique dealers, book sellers, record shops etc on the east end. This is still no excusefor some businesses to rip off the locals. And you wonder why I go to Riverhead." Oct 8, 10 12:36 PM

Westhampton Beach Police Officer Takes Stand In Kabot DWI Trial

I've seen hundreds of these arrests personally in the past. My opinion, from viewing the cam is, the video is too weak to get a DWI conviction. Kabot admits consuming some wine earlier at a party. There was reasonable cause in pulling her over, without question, but not part of a conspiacy theory. She'll walk. In this case the video hindered more than helps towards a DWI conviction. On top of that, no intoxilzer results. Weak case." Feb 2, 11 4:25 PM

Frank,
Your correct on the refusal of an intoxilzer test. The law is very clear on the consequences of a refusal. But, if you know you are not going to pass it, why give the government something that will be used against you? Kabot also said things on the tape that don't help her case either, prior to being given her rights.

Make no mistake about it. Drunks have no business on the roads. This is strictly, whether the evidence submitted will be strong enough to convict her of DWI. I don't think so, but if I was attorney, I would go deeply into the training of the police officers who did the stop. The last thing I would do is go into the conspiracy theory." Feb 2, 11 6:02 PM

Spontaneous utterance that does not help her case and is sure being used against her, with the showing of this video in court. People have to learn to keep their mouths shut in these situations.
Thanks SH Press for showing the entire video the government released. Newsday showed a 1 minute edited version. What a joke." Feb 3, 11 9:35 AM

View The Kabot DWI Police Tape

Does anyone know what happened to the passerby who was alledged to be running his mouth off at the police during Kabot's stop? The video shows only a man walking a bicycle in the background, but the police's attention do not seem directed to this person at any time. If I recall, this guy was threatened with arrest if he did not leave the area. However, this video does not show it, unless it's in the so called 4 minute gap." Feb 3, 11 10:28 AM

Yea, at least 10-1 in favor of acquittal. Somebody lied. Read old article below!

Mr. Keahon also revealed Tuesday that an anonymous letter mailed to Southampton Town Hall about a week after Ms. Kabot’s arrest is also being investigated by her attorney. The letter, copies of which were also mailed to the supervisor’s private post office box and home address, state that “[w]hile you were being field tested for sobriety, a call was placed to Anna by a ranking police officer who told her, ‘We got her.’”
On Tuesday afternoon, Ms. Throne-Holst said someone did call her early in the morning on September 7 with the news of Ms. Kabot’s arrest, but it was not a police officer. Ms. Throne-Holst would not say who called her or what time she received the call.

Would you mine telling us now Ms. Holst, who called and what time?

Jury Verdict In Kabot Case: Not Guilty Of DWI

ICE, you are correct in that Holst denied getting a called from police officer ref Kabot arrest. Read below.

The “Anna” clearly refers to Southampton Town Board member Anna Throne-Holst, the Democratic candidate who is challenging Ms. Kabot, a Republican, in the November election for town supervisor. Though he acknowledges that the letter came from an anonymous source, Mr. Keahon said he plans to investigate the matter and to determine if a call was, in fact, placed to her that night.

“We’re not making accusations at this point, but it certainly triggers an inquiry,” Mr. Keahon said, referring to the anonymous letter.

On Tuesday afternoon, Ms. Throne-Holst said someone did call her early in the morning on September 7 with the news of Ms. Kabot’s arrest, but it was not a police officer. Ms. Throne-Holst would not say who called her or what time she received the call.

“It was all over the radio waves,” Ms. Throne-Holst said, referring to Ms. Kabot’s DWI arrest.

She added that the accusations made in the anonymous letter are false.

View The Kabot DWI Police Tape

The person of interest you are speaking about is a male walking a bicycle who can be seen on the sidewalk at the location Kabot parks her vehicle. He is in the video throughout most of the stop. Who he is, what he saw, what he did is unknown. I am sure the defense interviewed him. Maybe he was not called to testify for credibility issues, who knows. It is odd that at no time, did the wireless mic the cop was wearing, pick up any audio from this subject. Remember, for a Dis Con arrest, he had to be causing some type of disturbance. The only reference to this person is Kabot asking towards the end, whether this man was going to be arrested and for what charge. You can also hear the cop requesting another unit to the scene for transporting this person to headquarters. He might have had an interesting story to tell, but it's almost like they locked him jail somewhere and threw away the jail!

Ref. the audio issues at the beginning, the PD unit is equipped with a MDT in the front seat, so the cop in passenger seat could be running the plate number of the vehicle Kabot was operating. We can't see or hear anything outside of the camera's range, so we don't know.. Audio commences after the stop! There is a state mandated audit trail of all DMV data run on the MDT's, so it would be easy enough to find out whether they knew who they were running before they pulled Kabot over. There is also a lot of idle chichat texted between the MDT's, but I don't know if that data is archived. You can see that, at one point, the cop is on his portable, radioing the dispatcher the plate number of Kabot's vehicle which would be normal procedure. The bottom line here is that at least one of the cops shut of the video for a period of time in direct violation of his commanding officer's order. And that my friend, does not help the state's case one bit." Feb 4, 11 11:21 AM

Jury Verdict In Kabot Case: Not Guilty Of DWI

Kabot was an enemy of Southampton Town Police. Someone who had to be taken out! SHTPD couldn't do it, so what better than to have an outside agency do it, (WHBPD). Perhaps she frequented the Westhampton Beach area at night, and the police were familar with her vehicle and habits. All you have to do is lie in wait to the opportunity comes along and them spring it. If this is what you called a conspiracy, THEY succeeded, destroying Ms. Kabot's political life. That post midnight call by a police officer to the other candidate seems to bear this theory out. Congrats. LK, payback is going to be a b***h!" Feb 4, 11 6:20 PM

Census Shows Soaring Increase in Latino Population On East End

According to the US census bureau, the dominance of non-Hispanic white people, who today account for two-thirds of Americans, will be whittled away, falling steadily to less than half in 2042.
So if I am still alive, I shall be the minority. Interesting to look forward to.

Southampton Town Board Appoints Wilson As Police Chief

You always want to try to promote from within. It tends to cause hate and discontent among the ranks if you don't. The only time I can see appointing an outsider is if there were serious problems within the department and they are trying to go in a new direction." Apr 29, 11 5:25 PM
