Athletes take the bus for the love of the game

This is truly a great program for our students! My children have been taking advantage of this opportunity for years and enjoying it to the fullest. The neighboring/sharing districts are very accomodating and welcoming to our athletes and the peer to peer relationships I feel will be long lasting! Kudos to our creative Athletic Directors and to our hard working students!" Mar 11, 09 7:28 AM

The Vagina Monologues...in Spanish

I cannot wait to see this performance. I have seen work done by Ms. Perez in the past and was very impressed. OLA is an amazing group of people and it is a breath of fresh air to have Latina Arts in our community!" Mar 25, 09 9:59 PM

Familiar issue in Bridgehampton School Board race

My name is Nicki Hemby and I am a mother of 4 and a BOE member
Since everyone has an opinion here, let me give you mine.
1. Joe Berhalter is not the most horrible person here. He has a REALLY bad idea of closing the school, but has brought some good ideas to the table on a BOE level. He has always respected me and my ideas, and says something.
2. Laurie Gordon may have made the most ridiculous statement in the entire article. “They just need a well-rounded experience. You need to be with kids who are smarter then you, different than you .. you need that social experience in high school.” Are you kidding me? Smarter than who Laurie? Different than who Laurie? What are you talking about? All 4 of my children are driven, well rounded students of BHS. There are on honor roll, honor society, athletes, journalists, musicians, thespians, student gov. members, tri-linguists (and yes English is the only language spoken in our home!), photographers and more! And that’s just a taste of what they get at BHS, not to mention what they receive in our amazing community. PLEASE don’t speak of what you do not know!
3. Nathan you stated “People are not going to choose this high school unless it already is better than any other school.” Quite honestly if I had the money to send my kids to Southampton as your parents did you, I wouldn’t. My daughter offered a scholarship to Ross and we turned it down. BH is our choice. Just because it wasn’t yours gives you NO RIGHT to tell me what is right for my children. Your family felt you would do better in SH, and you paid tuition (I am assuming you paid tuition because your family didn’t move). And no one faults you or your family for your choice, but how dare you try to alter mine! I grew up in BH and went to private school, but my parents would NEVER dare tell other parents what is right for their children. Shame on you!
4. Joe? Sorry to hear about your signs, but lower taxes and better education? Is that only for those south of the highway and on Lumber and Mitchell Lanes? Because I don’t see any on the Turnpike! Is it because people there don’t matter? Is it because there tax dollars don’t count or a better education on the Turnpike is not an issue? How many of the homes you placed your signs on have children who are of age to go to BH? How many people south of the highway are looking to get a better education for the kids in BH? How come in your articles you don’t mention the tax dollars but in your social clique that’s all you talk about. Lets keep it real! You would gain more respect!
5. The Blog? Brilliant and funny and just what our community needs! Rock on!

Here is the deal. We are not fighting for votes, we are fighting for our kids education and a school that has educated many of the families in this town, both North and South of the highway. It’s a shame that people feel so self righteous that they think that they have the right to tell others what to do with their children. Joe Conti is a smart man who is at the age of retirement. Why does he spend all this time trying to close the school? Because he is worried about my child’s education? With less than 75 kids in the high school Joe Conti wouldn’t know one of my kids if he stumbled over them! And there’s 4! Nathan Ludlow, I hear is a decent guy. But at 25 and no children? He knows what is best for my kids? Laurie Gordon, she has children who need to be educated and who I hear are smart and likeable. Laurie, I know that if you were to get more involved in BH, you would see what an amazing school it is! Maybe we could change your mind……just give us a chance.

Thanks for you opinion.

I hope you enjoyed your visit to the school the other day, as we enjoyed having you.

The truth is that as a BOE member I speak for a good number of the community. That’s why I was voted in and that is why I will continue to fight for what many believe is right. That’s what being a BOE member is all about!

I am sorry my comments scare you, dont be afraid. If I ooze anything it is love and support for our school and students. If you came to a BOE meeting and or school function you would see that I am anything BUT a mean spirited person, but I am not here to defend myself, yet defend our school. If I am full of anger it is because this is VERY personal for many! What IS childish is you making light of a child’s accomplishments. Make no mistake Mr. Mansfield, our children work very hard to get where they are, clearly you are just as miss-informed! Our extra curricular activities are shared programs with our neighboring districts, the same districts your candidates would like to send our students to. Programs with tryouts, cuts and competition, so I am not sure you are fully informed. Our students find your comments hurtful and demeaning! If it is the child’s best interest you have at heart, try the uplifting approach, it works!

Whether you see me as taking the high road or low road, it is my road. A road I have no problem traveling, a road where I am not alone, and a road that has been traveled by others in the past!

I trust the people of BH will speak loudly once again!

PS-Jeff- I have moved on to colored pencils" Apr 29, 09 12:03 PM

There seems to some good information out there about some of our neighboring schools. But this is about BHS. And truth be told, if the three candidates running to close BHS get their way, our children will not be going to Ross.

And since I am the mouth-piece for the students (thank you Jeff), I will tell you that I have been having very conflicting emotions this past week. Of course the mama bear in me comes out lashing…in my first letter of course (I’m working on that :) ) and then I settle in and start to really listen to the community that I know. I start to listen to the children. They are hurt and in uproar. It is encouraging for me to see our youth up in arms and wanting to take a stand for what they feel is right, no matter what the topic. I have been privileged to listen to their concerns of what would be if they had to transfer (cliques, drugs, long bus rides, overcrowded classrooms, being an number not a name, fights etc.), and it’s heart warming because they recognize what a safe, amazing and unique school they are in now.

I have not heard from one child all week that they would like to go to Southampton, Easthampton or Sag Harbor. I did not hear one student say that they felt like they were getting a raw deal academically or socially and were in need of more than what they were getting now. Nor have I heard anything remotely similar from the parents of these students. (Yes I spend time with the parents too!)

This is a difficult time for students in all districts, but especially difficult for those students in BHS. 11th graders just took their first rounds of SAT’s on Sat. Finals, Subject Tests and NY State Regents are coming up fast. At a time that we expect our youth to focus on their studies and grades, this issue once again plagues their final quarter and yet we expect them to concentrate.

I do hope the voters choose correctly. And when this is all said and done, my wish is that our students will be able to finish the end of this school year and every school year to come with out these unnecessary pressures bestowed upon them from the candidates, BOE and/or the general public. After all…..it is about the kid’s right?
