Parents Blast East Hampton School Board Over Handling of Graffiti Incident

good point - move on and stop sending kids the message that they are picked on by the school every time the parents don't like a school decision. Heck these kids will learn soon enough out in the real world that things are not easy - how will they cope in two or three years when a boss or co worker does something they don't like ??
Don't think in two years they will be sitting around with their friends saying "hey remember that time the school picked on us and asked us if we saw who did that graffiti ! wow that was terrible !! " Nov 16, 11 5:17 PM

Sag Harbor Releases Bids For Police Protection, Southampton Town Lowest

It is not going to happen - this is a weak attempt to settle there contract problems.

It is interesting to note that the locals do not seem to be taking it too seriously and that the one board member seems to be the driving force. As an aside, the Towns of East Hampton and Southampton Police forces and very low on manpower, and neither is currently staffed to handle the job - they were "asked for numbers and they gave them, but neither can do it at this time Papers should ask these chiefs "are you currently staffed to take this job ?" Town Board Lifts Suspension Of Southampton Town Police Lieutenant, Settles Disciplinary Case

The reporter should fact check something - it states that the Chief promoted the Lieutenant just one year ago... Word is that the BOARD made the promotion against the Chiefs recommendation - very easy to check - just ask. I will bet no one in the media will do it. " Oct 25, 12 5:42 PM

Former County Legislator And Village Trustee Criticizes Police Binding Arbitration Process

The reporter should vet some of the information. A very important point Mr. Jones made, is completely incorrect ...... he stated that the Arbitration process involves Three (3) Arbitrators. This information is not correct, and troublesome, in that someone familiar with the process would know this. Arbitration is problematic for both sides of the issue, several points that Mr. Jones was also unaware of:
1. The process encourages unions to submit over the top negotiation requests, because the last pay raise proposal left at the table, is the highest level the arbitrator CAN award -i.e. the Unions ask for 2% arbitrator wont grant 3%. 2. Municipalities will sometimes fall back on arbitration - on pay increase decisions, knowing they can blame "the arbitration award" as we often see in the papers, for sky rocketing costs. 3. Arbitration and Attorneys fee's related to same are rarely disclosed to the media, by either side (Sag Harbor as an example) 4. Arbitration decisions take into account the municipality "ability to pay", and the Pay scale of similar groups. -This works 100% percent against a municipal negotiating team if they are are not negotiating with this factor in play. 5. When these awards are made, Without a doubt - both sides have an idea what they will be - It's just that the taxpayers are not told. Mr. Jones was correct on one point - the process should not be a tactic a municipality should embrace, - nor should the tactic of threatening to eliminate Jobs and a Department be used. Tearful East Hampton Elementary School Principal Addresses Board

Some clarifications and info: The Board by Law, Votes on the termination of an Administrators tenure track, otherwise the employee gets "Tenure by Estoppel " after the third year. This fact, unknown to most News outlets, Board watchers, even school employees. . In this instance the confusion, beating and black eye the District recently took -over this matter, was caused by the District not following their own procedures. The Principal and other non tenured employees have always been reviewed every year prior to tenure by the Administration and those reviews combed over by the Board - To avoid just the type of sad mess that the School community went through. If a non tenured employee had a negative evaluation in their second year - the Board and employee would know, and a plan to correct any problems would be spelled out, followed and documented. If this had been done you would not have had the chaos and negative sentiment in the school community. You also would not have had a positive message sent out after year # two, to both parents, the employee and family. Figuring out what to do, and what is going on in year three, catches everyone off guard. In this case, due to the inexperience of all the players, as well as Changes in Supervisors, they didn't follow their own rules, The Administrator, doing well going into her third year suddenly has problems ? The Board, District and Employee caught off guard, The evaluation system done in by having "different" people conduct Different evaluations, and then using "general feeling" of support or lack of it, as an evaluation tool. ? .Huh ? Where is the documented plan for improvement - did the Board see one ? No, but they should be asking for this kind of paperwork - Add to this the fact that the Board is let down by not even knowing what went wrong, The Board did not cause this, BUT they must fix the mess and lack of process. The District needs to put its procedures back on track - Anyone who tells you the District followed its procedures is one of the people who doesn't know what they are. Pick the correct statement: We recently had this chaos, confusion and anger arise because the district: 1. Followed solid procedures, or 2. Dropped the ball and forgot them. which one ? Not hard to see. It seems everyone knows something went wrong, Now let's fix the process so it does not happen again. ... Several things to avoid - An out of town pinch hitter, (this was said to be not an option at the Tuesday Board meeting), and steer clear of those that contributed to the fall of another, either by action or inaction. Correct process and procedures do not allow what just took place - " Apr 4, 13 8:56 AM

Official: DEC Says Southampton Beach Projects Violate Permits

Bet the DEC issues no tickets (summon)s to any one involved - they will instead "negotiate" and talk with the attorneys. Had there been a fisherman with an undersized bass involved - they would have made an arrest, and sold the fish. Money talks folks this is a Department that is heavily influenced by politics and money. tell me it isn't true You can bulldoze a dune, just don't catch an undersized fish. " Apr 9, 13 10:24 PM

Appeals Court Denies PSEG's Restraining Order, Expedites Hearing For Preliminary Injunction

The fact that the local Govt's signed off on this project in the first place - is going to result in one of two things - the poles will stay, or the taxpayers will have to pay to bury them......very simple, the rest is political shenanigans and public relations nonsense. Politicians will be the big winners here, 1. great photo ops 2. "we are on your side" speech's and 3. opportunities to sponsor resolutions or legislation to appease the angry public. Shared Superintendent A Possibility For Tuckahoe School District

The consolidation process will always be controversial and unfortuantely designed so that one district seems to have a reduced tax and one an increased one. That being said "shared services" should be further examined and pushed, as it can provide opportunity educationally and reduce operation costs in business, finance and administration - without pitting one district against another " Nov 19, 14 3:06 PM

Group Forms School Consolidation Committee In East Hampton To Seek State Funding For Study

The article should have had the headline "two men from Springs and a local politician" The districts have been through this over and over. In the past few years They dropped the idea of even funding a study, (did the paper not know this ?) once again there is no mention by those promoting the idea, nor even the media (who maybe do not remember) that the study was done - by Dowling, (an independent one, by the way), and the facts have not changed.
unfortunately It benefits one tax district over another making some unhappy districts (who happen to be voters as well)- the other issue that no one mentions is that the money saved in consolidation comes from cutting jobs (yes some top end admin ones, but also support staff as well, which leaves many people not too excited about the concept. The "Educational Benefit" aspect is also fuzzy, as experts can not even agree on the impact. Not as simple as it sounds. " Mar 1, 15 11:29 AM

UPDATE: Driver Of Car In Fatal Friday Bridgehampton Crash Identified

It is sensationalism, and the Victim's family is further traumatized. The Police will end up extending the crime scenes further and further to keep this photographer and his paper away from the scene - The press can go where the public can go - anything else is at the discretion of the person holding the perimeter. It will be important moving forward to be able to enforce whatever law is finalized. on the books. As of last summer - and this fall, Aircraft owners seem to cooperated - hense the headline.
