Illegal Immigration: In Pursuit Of The American Dream

The basis of this issue is the all-powerful mighty dollar. Workers migrate here for work and are hired by companies to increase revenue with cheap labor. The pursuit of money is a vastly powerful and unstoppable force that will not be deterred by any means short of firing lines and certainly not by some dude with a mullet holding a sign while waving at passing cars as if he is the homecoming queen. The problem then is the law, lawmakers and society conforming and accepting this inescapable presence that is only going to grow with time. The current laws make it extremely hard for benevolent and hard working immigrants to gain basic residency let alone citizenship. There are illegal immigrants that WANT to pay taxes and become a contributing member of our community but CANNOT. There are also illegal immigrants that want to fly under the radar, avoid taxes, and take advantage of the system. In either case unless the laws change nothing is going to change, there is no other solution.

I know many illegal immigrants personally through jobs around the Hamptons and in my personal life and I have found these people to be OUTSTANDING members of our community who deserve the same rights and privileges that my great grandfather had migrating to this country.

Last, anyone arguing that immigrants are not financially contributing to our community should read page 19 (actually 4) on the following 2010 Hofstra research report: http://www.hofstra.edu/pdf/academics/colleges/hclas/cld/cld_f10_immigration_impacts.pdf" Mar 29, 12 1:39 PM

There are a handful of trails entering and exiting this area and the woods are too thick to make it out without using them. A handful of cops posted in the right places could have grabbed this guy, helicopter seems totally unessisary. " Jul 8, 12 10:37 PM

UPDATE: County Road 39 Reopens Six Hours After Crash

It doesn't sound like speed played a role in this accident but regardless police are constantly ticketing on 39, I travel this road 5 days a week and see cars pulled over daily. 2 coworkers and my brother were ticketed within the last 30 days for driving between 51-53mph which is a little more than 15 mph over. In my experience tickets normally start at 20mph over the limit so IMO police have a smaller tolerance on this route. Its common knowledge that there is a low tolerance for speeding here, traffic travels at 50mph and cars traveling faster are rare and typically out of towners that don't know better." 'Cruise Ship Virus,' Norovirus, Lands On East End

Millions of legal US citizens cross the borders every year w/o any "accountability" in terms of disease control but you're pointing the finger at the small percentage of illegal crossings? Plus the article is about a strand of the common flu, keyword there is common, which we would have here with or without illegal immigrants, there is no correlation. Are you the type that looks for any reason to point the finger at illegals? May I ask where your grandparents are from? Are they Native Americans? If they are not then you are the direct decedent of an immigrant and should think twice before hypocritically calling other immigrants out for coming to this country for the same reasons your family did. The reason most immigrants are illegal is because it is near impossible to immigrate here legally and most immigrants would do so legally if they had the opportunity. It is the laws, law makers and our society that is the problem." Feb 15, 13 4:06 PM

Protesters Against Illegal Immigration Gather In Southampton On Tuesday

These people are NOT leaving. Most are here to make a living for their family which would take nothing short of a fire line to deter. If you are upset by these people using the system are you also upset by the millions of legal citizens that take advantage of the system everyday for their entire lives? I would argue that it is the SYSTEM that is broken; these people are not the problem. Unless you are living on the res your ancestors were immigrants too and these immigrants should be given the same privileges that your family received. We have more in common than not. The process to immigrate (legally) has change DRAMATICALLY since your grandfathers' time. There's a Big BIG difference. If the laws were then what they are now he would probably be an "illegal" too. " May 23, 13 12:09 AM

Brown Tide On The Rise In Moriches, Shinnecock Bays

Bingo. Fertilizers, run off problems and septic systems lead to an increase in DIN [Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (e.g., nitrate, nitrite, and sometimes ammonium)] in the waters which is a major contributing factor of this issue. The lowest hanging fruit here is FERTILIZERS, folks. Our bays are dying as a result of this issue and we are beyond the point of required action but instead those in power have allowed waterfront properties to maintain neon green lawns at the cost of nearly all surrounding sea life." Westhampton Beach Village Secures Permission To Connect With Gabreski Sewer System

There is no such thing as a bullet proof sewage treatment plant and experts say that they are only as good as the amount of money you spend on them. Sewage treatment plants suffer from human, electrical and mechanical failure. The plant in Riverhead discharged millions of gallons of partially treated sewage this winter into the Peconic River due to mechanical failure. Search for an article titled "Riverhead cited for discharging partially treated sewage into Peconic Bay in November" which begins with "Riverhead treatment plant discharged 2.5 million gallons of partly treated sewage into Peconic Bay over three days in November [2014]..." Furthermore beyond the 1.5 million dollar investment I would imagine the cost to run these new pipes through the Thick assault and pavement on Main Street and surrounding areas could be astronomical and lead to a major disturbance in town. Finally, the Air Base is about 30 feet higher in elevation than Main Street which means the system depends on electrical pumps. What happens if there is a failure to this portion of the system!?

In my opinion the major motivation behind this change is to allow variations within the village building code which would allow for more businesses and housing (especially more apartments above preexisting businesses around town). What we will have in the end is more taxes for Everyone in the village, a system that very well may pollute the water ways here More and will result in an increase in the number of people living in town which will further increase the Other problems we have here! (such as parking!!!!)

Finally FYI Moneybogue Bay is misspelled in this article. Ask me how I know this." Jul 17, 15 7:22 PM
