Surf Lodge under heat from county and locals

BigJimbo's attitude only supports local sentiment against the club. Calling "locals" idiots is not a good way to make your case. I live about a half mile away from the club. One recent Saturday night, it was so loud I could almost make out the lyrics of the songs being sung by the band. My daughter had to make the TV louder. There's garbage all along the road in the morning. The congestion on the road at the driveway and nearby intersection will result in a tragedy eventually. We locals have a sense that patrons of the club - who appear mostly not to be locals- have a "screw you" attitude toward anyone not sophisticated enough to enjoy the execesses of the Surf Lodge. That doesn't make us more tolerant." Jul 22, 09 10:41 AM

Montauk smiley faces require town approval

I really liked the single smile. If preferred it to the new trio, but that's just a matter of personal taste. Laraine Creegan is right. It's a fun place, at the beach, why shouldn't he take advantage of the fact that being in Montauk makes you smile? The real news story is that the Town is once again sticking its nose into private business for no substantive reason. " Nov 30, 09 2:22 PM

East Hampton to let Surf Lodge keep live music

Great. Now the sound will be focused on my neighborhood. One night last year, on my deck, our guests commented on the quality of the band's sax player. You could almost make out the lyrics. And we're .87 of a mile as the crow flies from the club. The trains are nothng compared to the club. " Feb 3, 10 4:11 PM

Ballot Count Begins; Altschuler Travels To Washington

Oh happy day! But even more importantly, how can this keep happening? The new conservative movement ought to make this one of its issues. Real election reform. From honest registration to requiring ID from voters to voting machines that are simple to use and swift and sure to count.

Why couldn't we have the old lever machines with electronic connections to transmit numbers immediately?" Nov 6, 10 11:12 AM

East Hampton Village Police Charge Man With Felony In Connection With Anti-Obama Graffiti

So-called graffiti "artists" should be apprehended and prosecuted. I wonder... have the East Hampton police ever spent four months searching for a graffiti writer and then charged him/her with a felony? Inquiring minds want to know." Sep 20, 12 10:53 AM

Wilkinson's Montauk Restoration Document Raises Eyebrows For Being Kept From View

How can anyone develop a complex plan - any plan on any subject - if every thought and suggestion (no matter how early in the process) has to be put in Macy's window (as we used to say)? Someone had to show leadership to get the conversation started. At least someone should show leadership. I'm sorry to see Wilkinson go. " Oct 9, 13 7:35 AM

Army Corps Will Not Extend Montauk Emergency Repair To Ditch Plains

These tubes would be covered by sand as I understand it. That sand would wash away and have to be replaced. OK, I still see a benefit. But the tubes themselves won't last too long... then what? Do it again? Won't boulders covered by sand last longer? Even though the sand coverign them would have to be replaced, you'd be replenishing sand no matter what but at least the boulders would stay. Right?" Oct 15, 13 3:56 PM

No, I don't know anythng about oceanography, except how groins destroy the beach (having watched it happen on several LI beaches in my life). So what's the answer? Doing nothing is politically and economically unacceptable. " Oct 15, 13 4:27 PM

UPDATE: Southampton Voters Overwhelmingly Defeat Merger Proposal In Straw Vote Tuesday

Nobody seems to want to acknowledge that this election asked taxpayers in Southampton district to agree to pay more, so that Tuckahoe taxpayers would get a major break in their taxes. Tuckahoe passed it by an 11-1 margin. Of course they did. It's remarkable that it got as many 'yes' votes as it did in Southampton. That's the whole story." Oct 30, 13 7:25 AM

UPDATE: Department Of Labor Confirms Prevailing Wages Paid At Gabreski

The term "prevailing wage" is a handy scam. It sounds like the union is fighting for the poor guys who are making illegally low wages. First - according the NY State Department of Labor, who is THE authority on prevailing wage, the lowest paid Local 66 laborer in Suffolk County has a rate of $51.45 (wages and benefits). It goes up to $61.81, The guys standing around the rat - assuming they are actually union members, not officials or hired picketers, aren't working for a reason. They cost too much. $50, $60 an hour is great. If you can find someone willing to pay it! That doesn't mean the workers on the job are being mistreated! And Marlinspike is right. Most construction workers today rather have steady work at a fair wage than spotty union work at high pay. You can't pay a mortgage if you don't know when your next paycheck will be." UPDATE: Tuckahoe-Southampton Merger Fails At Polls

People don't want higher taxes. Period. Democracy doesn't mean you keep voting until the district gets the outcome it wants. Deal with it." Nov 19, 14 7:01 AM

UPDATE: Army Corps Montauk Beach Project To Go Forward

The town has to show some spine: finish the project. "Sand" is not a viable answer after the downtown and the livelihoods it represents are gone. The protesters really want to see the ocean wipe away the hotels. Is that the answer? Send Montauk back to the 19th Century?" Nov 16, 15 9:04 AM

'Legs' Documentary Explores Division In Sag Harbor

It seems to me that a lot of what Ms. Vered does is intended to promote her business - selling art. A fight over art is perfect for her. We've now been talking about it for seven years. Mission accomplished. " Feb 16, 16 12:52 PM

Details Of Tuckahoe Road Reroute Proposal Emerge Amid Community Outcry At Work Session

It would be helpful if 27East showed readers a map of the proposed re-route. The explanations merely refer to St. Andrews Road being "extended" to meet Tuckahoe Road. That means there will be no way to travel north on either St. Andrews or Tuckahoe. They'll both just loop you back to where you came from. If you take away Tuckahoe Road as a means of travel into the North Sea area, you'll only overload traffic on to Shrubland Road and Tuckahoe Lane... and you'll need a new traffic light for at least one of those intersections.... as if County Road 39 isn't backed up enough already. And for what? An alleged safety problem that's been there for 100 years but is only important enough to do something about now?" Aug 4, 16 3:12 PM

UPDATE: Westhampton Woman Dies From Injuries In Sunday's LIE Crash

As soon as I saw the aerial of the accident site, I knew those "humps" had to play a part in this. Taking them at 55 mph is scary. If (and we don't know this yet for sure) someone was driving much faster than that, it's no wonder the car went out of control." Aug 22, 16 9:19 AM

UPDATE: Union Memos Outline Opposition To Bill Clearing The Way For New Southampton Hospital

Labor relations people know exactly what this is about. NYSUT represents employees. CSEA represents other employees. A new hospital creates a pool of new jobs that both unions want without even asking the employees if they want a union. Staffing the hospital with employees from a third party (very common today) means these new employees will not fall into either union automatically, like low hanging fruit. That doesn't mean they can't try to organize them, but it means they have to work at it. And the employees would likely have a secret ballot election. Neither union wants that.... they might vote "no."
"Staffing concerns" or later, "patient safety concerns" is what they will publicize. Right out of the playbook. Both unions know they can count on the politicians they help elect to try to pressure the hospital." Jun 9, 18 3:45 PM
