North Haven Seeks Multi-Year Deer Culling Contract

We are in the midst of an epidemic of serious diseases carried by the deer tick. More and more are being discovered including babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and Powassan viral encephalitis, all of which can be fatal. The deer epidemic caused the Lyme epidemic. In 1930 there were just 300,000 deer in the US. Today there are 30 million. Over 10 years ago we learned that the solution is deer removal. Lyme epidemics were stopped by deer removal in Mumford Cove CT, Great Island MA, and Monhegan Island MA. This works because ticks come from tick eggs and over 90 percent of tick eggs come from ticks on deer. Adult egg-laying ticks require a sizeable mammal to feed on and cannot feed on a mouse, for instance. Ticks from just one deer can lay a million tick eggs per season. Tragically, the animal rights activists have prevented us from carrying out the medically necessary deer removal projects. Lyme disease is under-diagnosed, under-reported, and under-treated. Even when treated with antibiotics, 10-20 percent can have persistent symptoms which may last for years, including crippling arthritis and brain damage. The group at highest risk for Lyme is the children. The animal rights fanatics care more about deer's rights than they do about children's health." Feb 27, 14 5:49 AM

G168, you are wrong and do not understand the life cycle of the deer tick. There are four stages: eggs, larvae, nymphs, and adults. Only larvae and nymphs can feed on mice. The egg-laying adult requires a size able mammal to feed on, and 90 percent feed on deer. Thus the deer is key to the reproduction of the tick, and removing the deer disrupts the deer life cycle. In Great Island MA, the deer population was reduced to a deer density of 8/square mile and the tick density was reduced 80 percent. This low deer density must be continually maintained as deer from neighboring areas migrate in. Although other hosts of the adult tick are present, none have been able to take the place of deer. Consider deer the tick-egg-spreaders and remember: not one tick egg comes from a mouse, and without tick eggs there are no ticks." Feb 27, 14 7:51 PM

Deer Slaughter Under Way In Southampton Town

Highhat, you couldn't be more wrong as you quote the deer-huggers' propagandistic lies. Lyme epidemics have been stopped by deer removal. This works because ticks come from tick eggs, and the main source of tick eggs is deer. Adult egg-laying deer ticks require a sizeable mammal to feed on, and over 90% feed on deer. Ticks from just one deer can produce up to a million tick eggs per season. Although mice can host immature forms of ticks, they cannot host the adult egg-laying deer tick. Not one tick egg comes from a mouse." Apr 5, 14 5:01 PM

Ostfeld with his pro-deer propaganda is the darling of the animal rights lobby. He is a mouse expert and has not been involved in the successful deer removal projects or scientific meetings. Lyme epidemics have been successfully stopped by deer removal in Mumford Cove, CT; Monhegan Island ME; and Great Island MA. " Apr 6, 14 7:02 AM

No, in all cases there was a high incidence of Lyme disease which came down, along with tick levels, when deer populations were reduced. I have spoken to Dr. Sam Telford who has run the deer reduction program in Great Island MA, and he told me that the animal population there is not skewed. They have all the other animals like raccoons, coyotes, etc. and have to continually maintain the deer population through hunting. Since they brought the deer population down to 8/square mile, there has been a 80% reduction in ticks. The Massachusetts State Lyme Disease Commission recommends deer reduction to combat Lyme. This is best done on a regional basis to keep neighboring deer from migrating in. However, the ignorant animal fanatics work hard to prevent this." Apr 6, 14 8:14 PM
