East End haunts are scarce but still there

The Halsey House, now a museum on South Main Street, was supposed to be haunted by the woman who was murdered there by some indians who came down from Connetticut to stir up trouble down here during colonial times. My mother summered in it several times, but never saw anything unusual even though she deliberately went looking for the ghost at night. Her friends thought her brave to stay in the house." How to replace outdoor lights

Interesting DIY article, but the directions were not as clear as they needed to be. "Check the open socket to make certain the power is shut down." How? Stick the tester tool down in it? " Nov 13, 09 6:32 PM

Tymann defeat mocked at cemetery that clashed with Southampton Town Trustees

It was a mean spirited thing to do. I bet the floral arrangement's were swiped from real people who had died, which is despicable, while the jerk who did it sniggered with his friends about his "clever" joke. It speaks volumes about the Westhampton Cemetery Association.

Grand love story behind crumbling Gin Lane wall

The wall's beautiful. I hope the curent owner does restore it as it is an asset to the village. But, the Press's story of its origin is not entirely accurate.

The wall did go up because the original owners were not allowed to join the club next door and their feelings were hurt. However, it was not simply because he was poor and married a rich woman or that they were new money. They weren't allowed in because they were considered to be Irish "bog trotters", as were a number of other Irish families who were not allowed in at the same time, even though they were very wealthy. A number of them ended up building their summer places in outlying areas of the village and for years parents from the summer colony would not allow their children to play with the Irish families' children.

People forget how much predjudice there was against the Irish back then. It was a lot like the widespread predjudice against Latinos now. Jews and people of color were also not admitted ... somethings do not change.

Shinnecock Indian Nation wins preliminary federal recognition

Congratulations to the Shinnecocks. Recognition has been a long time coming, although it was a no brainer that they were entitled to it.

I doubt they want a casino on their own property. They are well aware of the disruption it would bring to the current peace and tranquility of the Reservation which they cherish. Westwoods is a possibility, but I think they would rather keep it for the future use of their children and grandchildren who will need land to live on eventually.

I think they are looking for a place that will give them the space to grow a casino business and have adequate access and ample parking. That might be Aqueduct or possibly the old Grumman property. Now that they have more legal standing, the state, county and town will have to work with them to come up with a location that will suit whatever plans they may have.

Up until now, too many shortsighted people - some elected officials among them, wrongly felt the Shinnecocks would never gain recognition and didn't take their casino plans seriously. Now, they will have to." Dec 17, 09 5:02 PM

Students ponder age-old question: What do they want to be when they grow up?

Apptitude tests have always had wierd results. Mine told me I should be a car mechanic and and/or artist, neither of which suit me. My daughter took one that said she was perfect to be a clerk in a supermarket and my son's said a bartender, which I felt was an unsuitable suggestion for a high school student. Daughter is currently working her way up the ladder at a big corporation and son is studying to be an engineer, so their results were equally off the mark.

I don't think appitude tests should be given to kids, especially if they have to pay for them." Dec 17, 09 5:12 PM

East End still digging out after record snow

The highway is clear and people are driving on it, though not too many of them. The Town called in extra help last night, hiring private plows to assist in keeping keep 27 and 39 open. One guy I know was called at 3 am to help.

There's between 19" and 25" at my place with higher drifts in places. This is no piece of cake to clear away. I haven't seen this much snow in years. We've been told global warming will cause larger storms, and not just in the summer. Hope this is not a taste of what to expect.

" Dec 20, 09 2:32 PM

Anyone know how much snow we actually got? I measured 25" on my front walk where it's somewhat protected by the house. In other areas it ranges from 19" to over four feet, though there are a few bare patches just behind the house where we are feeding the birds. We have drifting snow.

My Mom says she has two feet evenly across her lawn in SH. She ihas a lot of bushes and trees, so whatever fell hasn't drifted.

Blizzard snarls life on the East End

A UPS guy just came to my door with no truck in sight. When I asked him where it was, he said 40 of their trucks got stuck yesterday so they are taking no chances today. They are parking their trucks out on the streets and hoofing it to each door, poor guys. My house is easily 600' from the road. Last I saw of him he was jogging back down our drive." Fifty people run from Red Creek Park to Southampton for the Feast of Guadalupe

Klansmen wear hoods to cover their faces as they want to look frightening, but don't want to be recognized. In actuality, they are mean, small minded bullies and cowards who want to intimidate as it makes themselves feel big, powerful and important. I have family members down south who were, and some who probably are still, members, so I know they type all too well. I am deeply ashamed of them.

The people in this event were sensibly wearing easily recognizable sweatpants and sweatshirts with hoods as it's cold, not robes and hoods which look quite different. The color white was probably for purity. There is no mixing up the two outfits - unless you wish to. The only attitude that needs examining is your's INS. You who say hateful things while hiding behind an avatar. Shame on you. You ought to be better than that." Dec 22, 09 12:13 PM

Southampton Town analyst says proposed wind turbine would harm environment

Look into things before commenting on them, things may not be what they seem.

These people want the turbine on their property because they hope to sell them. It's a business venture, not a "green" venture. The issue is whether their waterside property is suitable for it, or not. If they simply wanted to be green, solar would work perfectly, but they want to put up their turbine to be able to show it to potential clients. Simple.

I'd like to put a cell phone tower on my property, but I would not be allowed to. This is not much different." Dec 30, 09 11:42 PM
