Elderly Woman Airlifted To Stony Brook Following Three-Car Crash On County Road 39 Wednesday

To call 39 "dangerous" is to be kind. "Death Trap" would be a better description. Put the road back the way it was with one full width lane each direction and shoulders. Take the rail bed east of Speonk away from the MTA and take bids to run a light rail service. " Jul 24, 15 3:36 PM

Painting Of Confederate Battle Flag Evokes Mixed Responses

I think your missing the bigger picture. Trump speaks to the people who have been hurt the most in the last 20 years, blue collar middle and lower middle class workers and families. And he speaks to very real issues for those people:
* The illegals and all the economic damage that comes with them. Most of that damage is done to the blue collar middle class.
* The crime problem the illegals bring with them. Yes his comments remind me of the Horton ads but hey, the guy he's talking about had a long criminal history and was deported 5 times before he murdered that young woman. There is also the cost associated with that crime and that relates to taxes.
* The issue of jobs. Perot warned us that the sound we were hearing was the sound of our jobs leaving the country due to bad trade agreements. Trump says I'm going to get those jobs back while Obama says those jobs are gone so get over it.

The scariest thing about all of it is that Trump may be the most credible candidate on the republican side. You may not like what he says but there is no reason to believe he doesn't mean what he says and that's refreshing. Trump doesn't have to be a great candidate to do well in the poles, he just has to seem better than the other choices." Jul 24, 15 8:13 PM

Wow Phil, where do I start? Thanks for the C&P but:

1. If I go through it line by line to point out everything that is wrong with it, it would tend to give it credibility as a reasonable response to my post above which it is not. In an honest discussion you can't just dismiss peoples honest and legitimate concerns by calling them racist and then claiming to have the higher ground.

2. Trump is admittedly obnoxious and over the top in his comments but in attacking him and his style of speech you have offered an article by an author who uses the same level and style of bombastic rhetoric. It just panders to the ignorant on your side of the argument without specifically refuting what Trump says.

As you personally did not respond to my post I am still not clear on your thoughts as to my point that Trump is doing so well because he speaks to a large group of people that really have no representation on either side of the isle. Perhaps, as a group, large enough to be a simple majority after you divide the remaining voters into their respective camps.

In the course of the lead up to the primary, I expect Trump will maintain his percentage and perhaps grow it a little. As candidates drop out I suspect most of their followers will migrate to a candidate other than Trump pushing him back in the rankings thus fixing the right's current problem. On the other hand he may refine his message somewhat and become a serious long term contender and that will make for interesting politics." Jul 25, 15 6:16 AM

Phil -
1. To assert that Trump speaks for for a large group of under- represented group of Americans lends him credibility. 2. He has not revealed a platform nor shared ideas for solving the problems the nation faces today. 3. He has no experience in public or international policy. 4. His over the top rhetoric is attracting the attention of potential voters who are inclined to believe that he can be trusted with the reins of government when his history of public comments have shown that he has no realistic grasp of the intricacies of political compromise. 5. As far as his views are concerned, he has alienated most of the immigrant community with his comments about Mexican immigrants calling them rapists. 6. He recently made comments blaming crime on racial minorities which only exasperates the the problem of crime 7. and alienates racial minorities 8.while he offers no solutions. 9. His favorability comes almost exclusively from republicans, though a small number of liberals and independents are, for the time being, supporting him. 10. It won't take long for Trump to drop out of the race- I'll predict that he won't make the second debate. 11. He is a sensationalist, seeking attention for his next profitable scheme. 12. Those who support him will hopefully become more informed and realize that he is as shallow a candidate as most think he is. Jul 25, 15 12:18 PM

Well that's annoying. It appears my responses to your points were deleted. I'll try again. Here's the shorter version:

1. To assert that Trump speaks for for a large group of under- represented group of Americans lends him credibility. - He is in first place in the polls. That gives him credibility. He has access to billions of dollars that he controls. That also gives him credibility.
2. He has not revealed a platform nor shared ideas for solving the problems the nation faces today. - He has identified the problems as he sees them and that is his platform. As a business person you would expect him to identify a problem, determine a solution and then implement it.
3. He has no experience in public or international policy. - He has at least as much experience as our last 6 administrations when they took office. Perhaps our last 9 administrations. Additionally he has been putting together public/private deals and getting things done when politicians couldn't for years. That translates to jobs and that is public policy.
4. His over the top rhetoric is attracting the attention of potential voters who are inclined to believe that he can be trusted with the reins of government when his history of public comments have shown that he has no realistic grasp of the intricacies of political compromise. - Yes he is obnoxious and bombastic but he also has many years experience running a business and putting together deals and bringing them to completion. That is the very essence of negotiation and compromise.
5. As far as his views are concerned, he has alienated most of the immigrant community with his comments about Mexican immigrants calling them rapists. - I believe his remarks were reserved for the illegal community and their supporters.
6. He recently made comments blaming crime on racial minorities which only exasperates the the problem of crime - How does pointing out a problem exasperate it? It is actually the first step in solving the problem.
7. and alienates racial minorities - Which racial minorities? The criminals who've jumped the boarder and their supporters? American minorities are among those hurt the most by our failure to control our boarders. Wether it be the importation of drugs, importation of crime or loss of jobs, most of those problems end up in minority neighborhoods.
8.while he offers no solutions. - Again, he has identified the problems as he sees them and as a business person you would expect him to identify a problem, determine a solution and then implement it. Something he has a track record of doing.
9. His favorability comes almost exclusively from republicans, though a small number of liberals and independents are, for the time being, supporting him. - Change "almost exclusively" to "mostly" and I agree with you.
10. It won't take long for Trump to drop out of the race- I'll predict that he won't make the second debate. - No opinion.
11. He is a sensationalist, seeking attention for his next profitable scheme. - I'm not sure I would agree that this has anything to do with his next business deal.
12. Those who support him will hopefully become more informed and realize that he is as shallow a candidate as most think he is. - I think that to consider him shallow would be to underestimate him and would work to his advantage." Jul 28, 15 3:21 PM

Except that Bernie Sanders solution for everything is basically to take from people who work hard and give it to those who don't. He is a career politician who doesn't take responsibility for his failed political actions and IMHO the middle class is sick and tired of career politicians with nothing to offer." Southampton Puts Riverside Bridge Project On Hold

Let's see: If it's 6' wide thats $827.00 per square foot or roughly the same price per foot as a Hampton's McMansion. Another way to look at it would be that it's a little less than double what Southampton Village is paying for their new ambulance building. Perhaps the towns should have published their budget and asked for proposals." Jul 29, 15 11:41 AM

"codswallop" - That's good. I had to look it up. Origin: British, informal meaning "nonsense".

Sometimes said to be named after Hiram Codd, who invented a much derided bottle for carbonated beverages (1875); the derivation remains unconfirmed.

East Hampton Camp Relocates Counselors From Three Houses After Court Order

So as usual the question the press never asks is what happened to all the people illegally living in the house? Were they all just left there and this is just a big show, a cost of doing business? What's the point if they are still there? This will just go to court and a politically connected mouth piece will go in the hall with the ADA and it will become some token fine and in the end nothing changes." Aug 6, 15 7:44 PM

Perhaps Schumer decided to vote against the deal because he read the tea leaves and he knows congress won't be able to override a veto in the event one is necessary. By voting NO he can appease his psychopathic Zionist supporters and still have the outcome many Israeli citizens, military and political leaders want, which is for the deal to go thru." Marlinspike - You are defining communism, not socialism." Aug 13, 15 10:26 AM

DS - Where did you get the idea it was only our deal? There were six countries involved all of whom are approving the deal with the exception of the US which appears to be acting as a puppet of the extreme right of Israel. And your right. We can keep our sanctions and the rest of the world can drop theirs. Then the money will flow to Tehran and Iran's nuclear program. Personally I don't care if Iran has nuclear weapons. What I do care about is that when Iran gets that bomb or is close to getting that bomb, the right wing whack job running Israel will start a war with Iran and the US will get dragged into it. The administration should make it absolutely clear to Israel that our support stops at defending them and if they start something they are on their own because Israel, as it is currently run, isn't worth one American life." New Affordable Homes In Southampton Village Near Completion

While I am happy for the folks getting houses I can't help but think this is a really bad idea. What is the town going to do? Buy a house for everyone making less than $70K? That's 80% of the population on the EE. Who's going to pay for it? " Aug 15, 15 12:58 AM

I am not independently wealthy nor have I inherited a family home. What I did do is work hard, learn a trade, work 60 hrs a week and saved enough to put down the down payment and get a mortgage to own a home. So please explain to me why I now have to subsidize 3 people who were too lazy or chose not to do those things." Aug 18, 15 1:05 AM

They are in every way shape and form subsidized housing. First of all the property belonged to the taxpayers of Suffolk County and it was given away instead of being sold at market value. Other money was taken from developers driving the cost of the other lots in the subdivision up. The material suppliers used excess profit they made off others to supply materials for free or at a reduced rate. The lawyers working pro bono didn't take a pay cut. They overcharged others to generate the excess profit to cover the work. Any work done by the town was done at taxpayer expense. All subsidies. While this is great thing for the 3 families who are getting a house, what about every other working family in Southampton? Are they getting a subsidized house also? Or are they just getting the bills?" Aug 20, 15 12:00 PM
