Southampton Town Leaf Pickup Program May Strain Waste Management Department

Some good points were raised. We used to burn our leaves but that pollutes so we stopped. The Town has a hiring freeze in place so when they lose an employee they cannot be replaced. According to Gregor the department is short staffed due to this. So fewer employees = less gets done. Waste Management & Highway should be able to get free help from those persons convicted of crimes requiring community service. They have road gangs down south, they should have road gangs here. The Suffolk County Jail is loaded with able bodied people costing us $30,000 a year to house and feed they should be put to work. The union issue is another story and the contracts should be opened and renegotiated and tied to equivalent private sector jobs and tied to performance. The accrueing and cashing out of sick, vacation and personal days is also part of the problem and that model is not sustainable and costs the taxpayer a lot of money. Municipalities should be able to bid work out to able contractors and not be bound by "prevailng wage" this would make the process more competative and we the taxpayer would pay less for the same job, Its time for reform all around on this or maybe we should stop paying 0ur property taxes and hold the money in escrow until they fix the problems. Southampton High School Student Will Not Return To School After Shotgun Arrest, District Says

Times have changed, even in rural communities which Southampton no longer is. I went SHS in the late 70's and many brought their shotguns to school when in season for hunting. However with the spate of shootings around the country at Schools its no longer acceptable to bring guns to school. Period

I think the kid getting arrested is harsh but suspension is appropriate. A signal has to be sent. We are no longer living in a bubble, just look at the stabbing in Bridgehampton last week and the car break ins reported by the police. The school acted swiftly and appropriately. " Oct 27, 11 6:52 AM

Quiet Skies Coalition Keeps Airport Debate Alive

The airport doesnt need to be closed but the helicopters need to be regulated. They should all fly over the Atlantic route, however they continue to fly over North Sea and Noyack disturbing the residences. In particular a loud black or dark colored helo always comes in loud and fast. The FAA should mandate approach and departue routes for helo's and impose fines for violations. It will be interesting to see what happens with the summer tower. I wonder if the uncontrollable helo's can be controlled..." Nov 2, 11 6:42 AM

Appeals Court Denies New Trial For Oddone But Reduces Sentence

How could a penalty for choking someone to death be to harsh. I think the judge should reexamine his thinking. It should be no less than the original sentance and when he gets out it should be lifetime probation cleaning the streets on his hands and knees with a toothbrush! It it werent for the Bridgehampton club backing him perhaps justice would have been served properly. This doesnt pass the smell test." Nov 11, 11 6:29 AM

The Fresh Market Is Store Interested In Southampton Village Site

Fabulous! Something else to compete with Waldbaums. King Kullen, Citarellas and Scmidts. A little variety is good for everyone and there is enough of a demographic by that loaction. Hopefully they can keep the prices down so us year rounders can go there. Variety competition is a good thing!" Nov 30, 11 6:19 AM

Southampton Town Board Approves More Police Overtime

The town has grown and needs more services in the police, highway areas. We enjoy low taxes compared to neighboring and western towns. Taxes need to be raised to hire more people in the PD and Hwy to cover the needs of the township. Its really the only solution along with contract negotiations with all the labor employeed by the town. Unpopular but everyone needs to pitch in during these times. The private sector is doing it so the public sector needs to be reformed as well. We all pay more a the pump, we need to pay more where we live to maintain what we have.

Southampton ZBA To Consider Bridgehampton Frontyard Pool Application On Thursday

They shouldnt allow a front yard pool, then there will be precedent for others. What about moving the house forward so that there is room in the rear yard if a pool is so precious to them?" Dec 14, 11 6:06 AM

Southampton ZBA Rejects Front Yard Pool Plan In Bridgehampton

Im disappointed! I wanted case precedent so I could get a pool in my front yard. I want to float in the pool with a cold beverage and wave to all my neighbors as they drive by!" Dec 29, 11 8:14 AM

Southampton Town Board Republican-Conservative Majority Holds Off On Key Appointments

Most of the comments are in disgust about what is going on, so why did Scalera win? You need to turn your disgust into votes hwover in the mean time perhaps an email campaign to our representivies will let them know what we think about it. The next election turn your disgust into votes for a persopn that will represent the people and get out there and spread the word." Jan 4, 12 6:37 AM

Contractor Claims Southampton Councilman Locked Him In Office After Worker Broke Into Home

When it comes to re-election remember all of this at the polls. First the TB is a part time job and while the salary sounds good $67k its still not enough to survive in the Hamptons unless everything is paid off. As such some of the TB hold other jobs. But how can holding a full time job alllow enough time to properly hold a senoir government PT job? It is widely known that Mr Malone is never in town hall, so the question lies. Is he doing Town work on the county pay check, or county work on the town pay check? The other TB members that work on the side their jobs are PT, or if not they present themslevs enough that they are always around and tend to town business. Second all government workers have to hold themselves above everyones else as they hold the publics trust. Should these allegations prove true, then that was violated. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Hopefully this will get kicked up to an ethics board to sort it out and if true some penelty assessed. Officals need to be held accountable." Jan 11, 12 6:48 AM

Bay Street Says Southampton Is Best Option Amid Few Sag Harbor Possibilities

WOW Bay St will be a wonderful addition to the village now that the space was empited as the museum stooped the village. It will be great going there for shows. Does the artwork that was benefacted to the museum stay there? I was wondering as I thought that Parrish gave it to set up a Village Museum. Now that the museum defected I was wondering if they are still entitled to the art?

Suffolk County May Face $500 Million Deficit

Mandates are killing all the government and public school business models. It needs to change as it is bankrupting all the property and state income taxpayers. The Tier system should immediately change as the accrual and cashing out of sick, personal and vacation days is killing us. Use em or lose em. If they changed that one step you could probably raise the workers salaries. Further the workers should start payng more for health insurance. The other uneccessary expense is the prevailing wage provision where governements are choked by having to pay more for labor than they should. Reading the stories in the newspapers of this one retirng and claiming hundreds of thousands of dollars in unused sick, personal or vacation days is abusive is this is the main reason for these deficits. Soon Ill leave NY as well as I wont be able to pay these inflated tax bills just to survive." Mar 8, 12 6:51 AM

New Canoe Place Inn Application Filed With Town

Its to dense of a use on the canal. Let them build "as of right' only. 40 Condo's driving down North road will be like driving down a canyon. I cannnot think of anything less hampton than that. They bought the properties and are sophosticated buyers so they know what they can do with what they own. Why then must we grant them more than they can legally have. CPI is not that precious versus over developing on the canal." Mar 16, 12 6:37 AM

Seven East End School Districts To Seek State Funding For Consolidation Study

Its a good idea. We have to many small schools scatterred around and it there will be savings by eliminating duplicities. The school tax portion of the tax bill is the single largest expense. The pension funding mandate and current employment model does not work properly thus increasing costs further than they should be. Should people object to it they can pay to go to one of the private smaller charter schools aorund that arent on our tax bill. Its an over do chnage. Next would be to consolidate governemnts Village>Town>County>State ......." Mar 20, 12 6:41 AM

Altschuler Gets Indepence Party Nod

Regardless of some peoples feelings for Tim, Should you allow the seat to be lost to an Up Islander, you can forget about any representation on the East End. Alschuler will put Smithtown on the map. I love the East End and we need to keep as much representation seated here. We have Jay on a County Level, Fred from the State and Tim in Congress. Think about it." Mar 24, 12 7:11 AM

Public Calls For Simpler Solutions To Make Noyac Road Curve Safer

Since the widening of County Rd 39, traffic now favors the Noyac Road shortcut. The increased traffic has caused issues for everyone who lives along Noyac Road. Its dangerous and banning commercial traffic would be a great start along with more stop signs to slow the pace down. The Sebonic folks implemented a "No Left Turn' off of Cty Rd 39 to limit traffic along their road and we should do the same. It should begin with closing off Sandy Hollow then North Sea Roads to limit the flow of Traffic. Traffic can take Scuttlehole to Sag Turnpike to head north. Stop signs at Roses Grove and Noyac & Millstone and Noyac & Bay St and Noyac as well as just east of Cromers in both east/west bound would do alot in slowing the flow down. Targeted policing for 6-9am then again 3-7pm would also help. This may even increase the usage of the businesses along the road instead of restricting access which some of the plans did. Stops signs, rumble strips, patrols could all be installed in a matter of weeks and save taxpayers money." Mar 30, 12 6:29 AM

Altschuler Challenges Bishop To Debate On Health Care

Im not defending Altschuler however as this has sidebarred outsourceing has come about because american labor is to expensive. SImple. The union models has shifted employment by itself has eliminated jobs in order to pay for the expensive mandates. Pension benefit reform is a must. You could probably increase workers salaries if they didnt walk away with the cashing out or sick, personal and vacation days, as well as computing the pension payout by including overtime or retiring after "2) years" even though your only 40-50 years old. It should be base pay. Once designed to protect the workers due to low paying jobs, as pay increased these perks should have been eliminated/modified. I work and if I do not, I dont get paid. I have never been paid when I m sick, go on vacation and what the H**l is a personal day. This keeps me productive and I have a vested interest in my daily activities. The model needs to change and should be retroactive. This is why municpals/school distrcist are having budget issues. The economy slowed, the money faucet closed down, now its time to look into the well.." Mar 30, 12 6:41 AM
