FCC approves new East End radio station

In your story "FCC approves new East End radio station" you quote Barbara Barri saying

"Connecticut non-commercial stations that reach Long Island see the East End as a 'cash cow,' so they opposed WEER’s FCC license.'

As a volunteer programmer at WPKN and WPKM, I must correct this statement.
I believe it is a mis-quote.

WPKN which broadcasts from Montauk and Bridgeport CT did not oppose Hamptons Community Radio’s license application or any other aspect of WEER’s work. WPKN has never taken a position on this matter, in any way shape or form.

WPKM Montauk at 88,7 and WPKN Bridgeport at 89.5 take no funds from foundations or government. We are totally funded by our listeners and progammed by volunteers from the community. This is our model for community radio.

As the Press correctly reported last week, WPKM has invited the community to
participate as programmers at our East Hampton studio at Whalebone Village.

Southampton Town may take legal action against Cablevision

Our public Access and Government channels (20 and 22) were removed from the basic service guaranteed by the contracts between Cablevision and four east end towns (Riverhead, Southold, Shelter Island and Southampton). This has nothing to do with the switch to digital TV and everything to do with violation of a contract that provided access to alternative news and public affairs programs and the ability to see their public meetings. Full discosure: I am one of 6 sponsors of Democracy Now! on the Riverhead public access channels. This non-corporate examination of the important issues of justice, war and peace should be available to all. " Dec 23, 08 9:02 PM

WLIU gets reprieve; bids coming soon

Public radio stations have non-commecial educational licenses.
My understanding is that they are not permitted to accept advertising,
although some broadcast 'underwriting' announcements - with just
the name of the underwriter - not a commercial.

WQXR, mentioned in this article was owned by Interstate Broadcasting,
a subsidiary of the New York Times Co. It was a commercial broadcast
station - not a public station- and was permitted to accept advertising.

WPKM- 88.7 FM Montauk and WPKN 88.5 FM Bridgeport are non-commercial stations that are heard in this area They accept NO advertising from for profit
organizations. This would violate the terms of their license.

Developers of planned senior housing project in Amagansett hope to move past opposition in next round at town planning board

Thanks to Gerry Mooney and the Windmill and St. Michael's Church boards for filling a sore need in the community. I hope that those who think East Hampton is only for the super rich are not allowed to block this project. " Apr 1, 10 4:43 PM

Plans are afoot to re-purpose Bulova Watch Case Factory

Sag Harbor and the entire east end needs housing that local working people can afford. It can be done here and has been done elsewhere as MO points out.
We do not need more luxury homes...there are several on the market right now just on my short street in Southampton.

What is lacking so far is the will on the part of local authorities in Sag Harbor to address the real need." Aug 16, 10 11:31 AM

Southampton Town To Consider New Formula To Reduce House Size

Is their a restriction on the setback of a house (distance to property line)?

Too bad that the proposed law can't be retro-active.
Allowing monster houses all over what was once open space and farm fields
is just one area where we have gone too far, destroying what was the appeal
of the south fork.
