I'll tell you what, lets ban cell phones in public places first! What about loud children? Banned. Thunder, banned. Broken Mufflers, banned. This knee jerk attitude about live music is so frustrating. No Music anywhere! And the world will be a better place. C'mon village board. Give some people some jurisdiction and they'll make an ordinance about anything they can get their hands on. This is all about perspective. From my point of view the musics not loud enough! How about that village board. Going to pass an ordinance?" Nov 26, 08 3:17 PM
This is very interesting... Seems to me, I can only afford to vote in one place at a time. Maybe if I hit the lottery I might be able to vote in... Two or three place's I visit on the week-ends." Dec 5, 08 11:02 PM
Just one question. Who pays to widen Sunrise Highway from 2 lanes to 4 lanes? Because thats what it would take to make traffic manageable. And that might not be enough. As far as "Press releases". I was just a child, but my grandmother (RIP) lived in Atlantic City before the casinos. And I remember the grown-ups talking about how great the casinos were going to be. Have to been to AC lately.
It's a ___t hole pardon my french. I used to love that city. I still have family there and they all curse the day the casinos were built. Remember, we live on a long and narrow island with only one access Rd through the south shore. My last word... County Rd 39." Dec 10, 08 9:03 PM
When they say "Southampton Town" Do they mean township? Because if they mean "township," here in Hamptonbays I'm saving up for the tax increase. Sorry to sound ignorant but why are we burying these lines in the first place? I thought we were in the middle of a "Decession". If someone tells me this is cosmetic, I'm going to burst a blood vessel... Please tell me this will save lives, cure some sort of disease or help wold peace... " Dec 11, 08 12:13 PM
EVERYONE LISTEN!!! We live on a LONG ISLAND! ISLAND is the operative word here. This is a matter of logistics. The LIE is already at emergency capacity. Sunrise Hwy can barley deal with rush hour traffic. This has nothing to do with rights to have a casino. Who will be asked to foot the bill to rebuild access roads... TAXPAYERS! No disrespect to Agawam, You must be a weekender. Or you've never been to AC. How can you be so dismissive. Shame on you! I'm not being nostalgic. I'm realistic. A casino in Hamptonbays will destroy the community as we know it. As far a Tax bennifits. LI already has a tax surplus and that goes to Albany. This needs to be an main-land venture. You can't stuff a 10 lbs dream into a 5 lbs bag... Period! " Dec 12, 08 1:28 PM
Of course this is a hot issue and I'm getting tired. But to say that once the Feds say so. Anything goes... That's ridiculous! Lets not forget who they work for in the 1st place! Some people need to put down the Kool-Aid. Do we need to start talking about famous federal mistakes in history? I think not.
This is all about "We the people" Our community. Our rights. Agawams got one thing right. We do have a choice. Stick together and it doesn't happen here.
As far as the impact of this "proposition," here are some interesting bullet-point about Mohegan Sun. These are just the bars alone... How many patrons does it take to keep them in business?
Lucky's Lounge,The Dubliner,The Lodge
Ultra 88 Dance Club,Geno's Pub,Bow & Arrow
Sunset Bar,Harvest Moon Bar,Leffingwells ,Star Bar
Taughannick Falls Bar,The Brew Pub at Mohegan Sun
An excerpt from the description of the on-site motel: "Standing 34-stories tall with 1,200 luxury guest rooms and suites" Ect ect.
Long Island better wise up. Take a close look at Fox W & M Sun. These places are growing and expanding every few years. I'm not talking a little "Traffic inconvenience" Take a hard look. If you think this is going to be like bingo on sundays, guess again.
THIS WILL BE 7 DAYS A WK 24 HOURS A DAY!!! FOREVER!!!
This is great idea for lazy politicians who can't balance a budget. And greedy businessmen that don't have to worry about something foul in their back-yards. I'm done... AHHG!!!
" Dec 12, 08 9:43 PM
Harbor man I thought I could hold my tongue but alas... Don't you mean "W____ Devil"
This is 2008. Please tell me who is "keeping the indians poor and living in substandard conditions... Is that true? Do they have to live in substandard conditions? Are you implying the "White Man"? is forcing them to live on the reservation? What is this "Creature" White man?
This is Southampton NY. 2,5 million dollar an acre Southampton. Not the "South side of Chicago". Who is forcing them to live in such a horible place?
You want to better yourself. You get an education, work hard (maybe two jobs like me) Read a-lot. Maybe even become President some-day. Your comments imply the only way that native americans can better themselves is by opening casinos.
I'm sorry your comment is ridiculous and prejudice. " Dec 14, 08 10:19 AM
Not at all!
My response was specifically aimed at Harbor Mans comments. He might not have meant it but his statement is soaked with racial overtones. Be-it a little backward. If you digest the entire comment you would see what I mean. PS I am not a "White man" if you were curious? BeachGal You need to read the entire thread. Thats quite an accusation. Actually my family has been actively involved with native Americans for over twenty years. They have been an integral part of my family for as long as I can remember. They have been business partners and close family friends. Just to be clear. " Dec 15, 08 2:48 PM

Bruce is right. Too bad about the pets." Dec 16, 08 8:26 AM
This is turning into a forum
I'd like to address the actual article and the problems associated with a casino in this area.
The projected estimate of visitors is approximately 3.3 million a year. Thats just under 1000 a day (by car)? Or approximately 6300 per weekend.
Do you know that Mohegan sun gets over 11 million a year. And they're not on the ocean.
You don't think that will strain our municipal resources? Lets ask the police dept. for example. Who will pay to maintain our beaches from that kind of traffic? Who is going to pick up the mess they leave behind as it happens every Sept?
Who end up paying for that?
What kind of tax benefits are we guaranteed? Is it going to lower my taxes?
Again I have to remind you, long island sends about 1 billion to Albany as it stands.
How much of this tax benefit are we going to see?
Not to mention the ecological and social challenges. I will not "lament" over another sea-side area that was destroyed by casinos. If you don't look at history your future is doomed. I am not going to accept this as the destiny of the East-end.
I don't know what to do for the Shinicocks. This is all about money. I don't know if there is another way to compensate them.If it were their right to build a giant garbage dump for all of long island to use. Would we say thats OK?
This will an irrevocable decision on our part. Let's stop playing games with the future of one of the last great areas of long island. This is a unique place historically and geographically. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun have nothing in common here.
Casinos are not built to help the community. Casinos are built to make millions of dollars for their investors.
How can you live here and say it's dying? You mean you have no nightclubs to go to in the offseason? Move to NY if you need more action.
As far as affordable house's, you might have to do what I did. Buy a house in Hampton Bays. Then you might reconsider where you'd put a casino.

What a battle of the Titans. It will be interesting to see what, if any kind of penalty will be levied on big campaigned contributer? Then again, seems like a little bureaucratic Karma is being served to the town. Could you imagine the landscape if we all had the resources that Ferrell had. We all know that "Money talks" Too bad that leaves the rest of us mute." Jan 2, 09 8:46 AM
Funny... Out of 17 responces the only negative one is from a "local" Farmer. I wonder if the "Farmer" knows something about being a "Farmer" that someone who isn't a "Farmer" doesn't know anything about at all. I know when I have a question about fishing I ask my plumber... " Mar 16, 09 5:11 PM
We should applaud Mr Schneiderman's courage to stand up for his principals. I for one can guarantee he'll get my vote." Mar 25, 09 5:29 PM
"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

Maybe these illegals are confused? Maybe we should stop saying "This is the land of opportunity" Maybe we should send the statue of liberty back...
Lets go back to the days when there were only Gu_neas, Ch_nks, K_kes, Inj_ns, Sp_cks, M_cks Ect...
Same racist sentiment, different era. The fact is, if you removed all the illegals from our country we would come to a grinding halt. Our very way of life now depends on their cheap labor. You can rant and rave all you like. Thats a fact. Maybe your just frieghtend.
Good' ol Americans like me and you are a dime a dozen. We're replaceable. From the beginning, the only way this country has been able to prosper has been on the backs of cheap labor. From the railroad to the skyscaper and all things in between. Ilegals built this great nation. You and I... We just live here." Apr 27, 09 2:04 PM
Just because you have a permit for a gun doesn't mean it's ok to shoot someone. All these examples of other casinos have logistical and demographic issues far different from ours. Do some research on other casinos and their impact on the surrounding areas.
As for the "Cute little casinos" again, look at the history of casinos in their areas. THEY ALL EXPAND!
Also, can someone tell me why a casino is the only way out of poverty for the shinnecocks? That seems insulting.
Lastly, if they put a casino up island, I'll surely cry for the poor guy/gal who has to drive to work... As I do, Plainview every day for over 8 yrs. Then I come home and work my second job at night to keep me out of poverty. OMG! Some of these post are just...
For those who suggest Southampton ( how about on the Pow Wow spot ) Your dead on. It would NEVER HAPPEN.
HB is the ugly stepchild. Well, I live here. I don't want it to get any uglier. Look at this past Mem Day Wk-end! Casino in my backyard! That's just what this community needs...

"In a proposal last year for last year for a $2 billion hotel and casino... a facility that analysts say would have the potential to be one of the largest and most profitable gambling facilities in the world.
That's for everyone who thinks a casino in HB would be cute and cuddly. For those who don't live in HB. Come on by at around 8am ck out the traffic now.
I know some of you must think I sound like a broken record... Well, maybe. I just don't want my town to become a broken record.

And I quote "Aqueduct property is huge and ideal for casino development because of its proximity to the city. The Belmont property is much smaller" Lance Gumbs
Again, this is a reminder to anyone who thinks a casino in our backyard is a good idea.
"Aqueduct property is huge and ideal" We are not talking about some cute place where "grammy" plays bingo. The Shinnecocks have MAJOR plans and
Hamptonbays cannot accommodate the facilities.
This may be one of the BIGGEST casinos on the East coast. If it is built on the "East End " it will destroy the environment and our way of life as we know it. You can bet on that..." Jul 1, 09 4:56 PM
That's exactly the point! If given the opportunity they will try to stuff a 5-10 million visitor a year casino into a 1-3 million visitor a year space.
Here's some math: 3 million visitors a year. That's a very conservative number.
That's over 55 THOUSAND visitors per weekend!
Foxwood has a very different layout to Hampton Bays. That's also the point! We have one way in, one way out! The casino would literally be in our backyard.
I've been to Foxwood... You can definitely tie one on.
Lastly, a unified community is quite a force to be reckoned with. If we stay united anything is possible. " Jul 8, 09 10:28 AM

When you drive under the influence it shows a total disregard for the life and well being of others. Look at todays Newsday cover...
It's not my nature, but I'm beginning to believe in the angry mob mentality. 100 yrs. ago these people (politicians) would've been tarred and feathered. The lack of accountability!
With the incalculable amount of wealth here, our tax base. How are we falling so sort of the mark! This type of mismanagement is OBSCENE!
Please don't tell me "Will show them in the next election" Let me know where you can get feathers on the cheap... A lot of them! " Oct 8, 09 3:43 PM

8 million is the original projected visiter count when the Shinnecocks were first discussing a casino in HB.
Thats over 20 thousand extra cars on Sunrise HWY a day. Over 150 thousand a week.
Southampton has a total population of aprox 54 thousand.
Could be one of the reasons you don't hear a lot of projected specifics about the casinos.
Taxes...Don't forget what we collect on LI gets sent to Albany and gets spread out over NY state... And look what that gets us.
" Jan 5, 10 6:04 PM
Do some research on Mohegan Sun. They may have started small but have been expanding over the last ten years.
They have over 10 thousand employees and boast 35000 visitors daily...
I have no objection to the Shinnecocks opening a casino...Just not east of the pine barrens. Not to mention the environmental impact on the area. I've seen what casinos do to their surrounding areas.
I love the summer season here. I even profit from the tourism. But I also relish september and the peace and tranquility it brings. You put a casino in this area and we'll have summer times ten, year around. Not to mention the seedier elements that follow casinos where ever they crop up. Quite honestly I can't think of one good reason to open a casino in this area in the first place... " Jan 5, 10 9:35 PM
