IRS says Southampton Town comptroller owes $650,000 in back taxes

Please. Read what I said before you get all defensive. Am I the only one to see the irony of the garnishment landing on the desk of the top finance person in the town... to garnish her own pay? And $651 thousand to boot! But even if one looks past the alledged tax issue, it's also telling how the financial disclosure form / process was handled: "... not notarized, dated or signed, was not filed with the town clerk’s office until April 1, 2010—10 months after it was due, and six months after the IRS attempted to lay claim to a portion of her salary." By a top town official where "financial disclosure" is supposed to be a top priority. So yes, you can't make this stuff up." Apr 14, 10 5:38 PM

Local Tea Party movement holds two rallies on Tax Day

So in 2010 American taxpayers paid LESS in taxes, as a percentage of each dollar made, than in any year since the mid-1970's. But lets not let facts get in the way of this fringe lunacy. " Apr 21, 10 10:16 AM

With all the press this fact has been getting since tax day it's common knowledge at this point. And its all over the web.Try this for starters: http://crooksandliars.com/jon-perr/10-inconvenient-truths-for-tax-day
" Apr 21, 10 3:00 PM

Its fine for people to be mad about how their (our) tax dollars are being spent on the national level (even though the state and local mess is just as bad or worse), and I don't disagree with some of those underlying views (esp. concerning the debt). The problem with the tea party "movement" is evident in the photos, with the signs that the protesters are holding up, including rants about "Marxists in the White House" "blah blah socialism" and the like. These people wouldn't know a marxist if one was having tea in their living room discussing the proletariate, and it underscores their lack of credibility (further evidenced by their rants about higher taxes - that are in fact lower)." Apr 21, 10 4:10 PM

It would be hilarous if it wasn' t so real." Apr 21, 10 6:14 PM

Please first explain how we are supposed to pay for the debt accumulated by GWB, after Clinton handed him a balanced budget? That is still the vast majority of the current debt. Oh and the Congressional Budget Office says that health care will pay for itself, and then some. And thats a fact." Apr 21, 10 6:36 PM

Poor Ronald Reagan. He'd be horrified to see what the Replubican party has turned into today. But then again he'd be run out of office: higher taxes; more debt; reducing nukes...heresy! Just look at John McCain = his party's presidential nominee 2 years ago and one of the consistently most conservative republicans in congress... he is IN FACT being run out of office! " Apr 21, 10 6:54 PM

Its very simple. You asked a question about paying off the debt, and implied that it is all from this administration. The simple answer is that most of the debt if from the prior administration. No that isn't a pass for the current admin but it is a relevant fact. And the CBO, which is the only entity that is charged with and in fact performs detailed analyses of spending bills (and which congressional republicans originally said they would follow their findings) say it will LOWER the debt. So that is my argument, Sir." Apr 21, 10 7:19 PM

Yes, a consistent 80 - 90% conservative voting record is downright liberal mamby-pamby by today's reactionary standards. The percentages are a fact. And you, sir, should calm down. " Apr 22, 10 1:02 PM

This is the most basic problem with the tea-party followers: don't bother with indisputable facts, simply scream LIES LIES! at the top of your lungs. In 2000 Bill Clinton left office with a $200+ billion budget surplus. In 2009 Geo Bush left office with a $1+ TRILLION budget deficit. Now, to be fair, the budget deficit/surplus is not the same thing as the debt, so read carefully. I know these facts are bothersome for you but these facts are so basic and true that you are in effect screaming your ignorance all over this site. I would provide the specific source for this factual data but since your conspiracy theories have already put the CBO into the "political" whatever (again, despite the fact that congressional republicans rush to stand behind CBO data when it suits them), there is really no point. " Apr 22, 10 4:05 PM

As Ronald Reagan would say: "There you go again!" Like I said, read carefully. You wrote (screamed): "Lies, lies, lies.... Clinton NEVER had a balanced budget". I simply corrected your lie. And talk about changing the subject, now you're going on about Newt Gingrich & co! " Apr 25, 10 9:58 AM

Silly pup...its from the ACU (American Conservative Union). Look it up and don't flatter yourself with "...battle of wits..." nonsense. Do you even know what the Congress is? (hint: it's both the Senate and House). " Apr 27, 10 8:07 PM

Wilkinson concedes that dock sale is off the table

I agree - the Town can't continue to subsidize this expense. I say sell / give the docks to the (genuine) commercial fishermen with deeded restrictions on future use/disposition. The Town should retain the permanent right to take back the property if the fishermen can't/won't adequately maintain it, even if thats 100 years from now." May 21, 10 12:05 PM

Vice President Biden visits Southampton over holiday weekend

How many times are you going to say the same, silly thing ( "...apoligize for this GREAT nation...")? The president was at Abraham Lincoln NATIONAL CEMETARY today. That's a National Cemetary with the graves of our veterans, whose families rightly don't view their sccrifice as any less than those at Arlington. Go ahead and criticize BP, health care, marxism in your dining room etc., but spare us all your belittling of the sincerity of the observance of Memorial Day. " Jun 1, 10 2:06 AM

East End has become hot location for film and television cameras

"Why the Hamptons"???
The TV & film picture film industry pumps hundres of millions of dollars directly into the city's economy. Few industries are so readily demonstrated to put cash DIRECTLY into local economies - and don't have any real negative impact. The east end should welcome, encourage and develop this potential gold mine being handed toi it. Local tradespeople and service providers make REAL money from this industry and employ locals. By restricting this activity (eg during the summer), the Hamptons municipalities are missing out on significant enconomic opportunity here. And the "impact" is no more than all of the other inconviences we face all summer long anyway. Real jobs. Real money. We should take it. " Jun 3, 10 1:30 AM

Environmentalist blasts towns, calls for CPF moratorium

I wholeheartedly agree. Stop this abuse of CPF. As stated above, the fund is "...intended principally to protect drinking water and preserve open space". So simple and clear, but instead being twisted for political points with every special interest group in sight. " Jun 15, 10 6:10 PM

East Hampton hires appraiser for Poxabogue

I'm hard pressed to understand what possible incentive SH has to buy out EH, unless the golf course and restaurant are making money hand over fist, and the towns are getting that cash. I don't know about the golf course, but we all know that the restaurant is dark, and in fact needs more capital investment from the "landlord(s)" just to eventually open. Why go there when you can simply keep EH on the hook? And why would any private business go near such a deal? " Jul 7, 10 7:52 PM

Contractor, marina owner cited by DEC for dredging

This story has parallels with property (land), where home/property owners find the rules ("law") expensive, time consuming and otherwise inconvenient for their purposes, despite the rules being well established. In fact when it comes to wetlands / shore areas, marina owners are more like high-stakes (speculative) property developers - they are keenly aware of the rules and what is and isn't allowed, and how important it is to have every piece of paper properely in order. Wainscott community members see disconnect in developer's vision for Plitt Ford property

"Kathy Giamo... said she didn’t think building a large supermarket would be “fair” for the people who live in the area and that she would prefer to see more forward-thinking planning, like a small community center or anything to turn Wainscott into a more “walkable community.” "I really cannot see any way this business can be developed at this property...”
What planet do these people come from? Wake up: when entities pay millions of dollars for commercial property (on Rt 27) they are going to seek maximum return on investment. And thats not unreasonable ("fair"). So when existing zoning provides for a 25,000 s.f. building you can rest assured that is the (absolute) minimum you will see put up.

East Hampton Town officials under fire for Surf Lodge parking agreement

Agree - Surf Lodge is the epicenter of what's driving the new Montauk, which everyone loves to hate, while benefiting from all the jobs and cash that the new scene is bringing (including the spill over Amagansett and EH).
