Group files second opinion regarding proposed religious boundary

Bottom line is that an Eruv along with many other modern inventions IS a way that orthodox Jews using clever and distorted logic have been able to justify a way to avoid the "requirements" of their strict and non-evolving religion. Many of us modern Jews DO object to these devices. Judaism is not like the other major religions in adhering to ancient and inflexible beliefs other than for the small percentage who are Hasid and ultra orthodox. It is objectionable for them to be seen a represent the other 90% " Nov 12, 08 9:53 AM

The reality is that an Eruv will essentially have no negative effect on anyone or anything. It is in fact viewed by many (mostly Jews), as an absurd way of getting around ancient religious rules just as are these new refrigerators that have a sabath timer to leave the light on inside so that the act of opening the door does not cause a TRUE believer to break the rule about turning on an electric light.
Part of the problem is the requirement that the Eruv be approved by local government or authority. This, then has touched on separation of church and state. Why ask the town or county of non-Jews to approve a purely religious bit of trickery and then get this entire foolish controversy started? The Eruv could have been defined by denoting the sequence of poles on a little map for the devoted. and maybe painting an inch diameter dot for those who need visual assurance that they have not stepped outside line and SINNED." Parrish Art Museum will break ground on new building next week

What does Rand's estate have to do with anything? or Rand herself???
Yup, I do agree that there are terrific American Architects. James Merrill in Sag Harbor is one of the best and award winningest out here. Glenn Heidtmann and Sons have built most of the major commercial buildings out here. Car dealers, Revco, 60 Churches, back to the original Julliard in NYC. Firm is over 100 years old, can build ANYTHING at award winning levels and quality and is best priced within 50 miles!!!" Jul 13, 10 1:46 PM

Restaurant owner will not open cafe at Poxabogue Golf Center

First of all, The course and restaurant does NOT straddle the two towns. It is in Southampton totally, BUT more to the point it is in the incorporated village of SAGAPONACK and under ITS jurisdiction. Yes, I agree, bring back DAN. Do not have dinner hours with a liquor license. Give him a lease in the "cleaned up" space at maybe 10% more than he was paying. It was a terrific accommodation for breakfast and or lunch at a GOLF course, which is what it was supposed to be!. Not one more silly night life spot in an area with more than any place else other than NYC. Sagaponack will decide on the evening hours and a liquor license. Both expansions of a pre-existing non-conforming use. I doubt it will happen!. Dan, where are you?" Aug 9, 10 6:48 PM

Why was Dan there for 20 years if he was not making a profit. It is NOT a golf course. It is a community recreational facility, and doesn't need alcohol. In any event, it will never have it!" Aug 9, 10 7:28 PM

New proposal for religious boundary on public roads spurs questions in Westhampton Beach

There are things an orthodox Jew may not do outside the home. The ERUV is essentially a fabricated extension of the boundaries of the home. so that they can push a stroller or carry an infant or child to religious services. It used to be constructed of a string or minimal indicator and in smaller communities such as parts of Williamsburg Brooklyn and such and in small shtetles in Europe. If it is designated by silver dollar sized black dots or markers painted on telephone poles way above eye level, NO one would notice and even the Orthodox would probably not notice but because they were then notified of the boundaries they could proceed with what they want to do on the Sabbath. While I do think the idea is kind of absurd to get around religious rules, I also believe that opposition to this totally non-obtrusive request can be clearly construed to be an anti-Semitic expression" Aug 27, 10 9:43 AM

Tuckahoe developer defends plan

No matter what ANYONE wants to do, there is always someone in your face. Self righteous little people who do nothing and accomplish nothing other than interfering in other people's progress. The property WILL be developed! Better that it serve the community in a very positive way than what can and might be done AS OF RIGHT! Keep it up and just see what happens. See an opportunity lost!" Grocery store in Wainscott's future

The only way Cook could get this job is by being an owner. He is without doubt the worst (see his fiasco at the light in Watermill!), not to mention all the other C and D grade attempts." Sep 27, 10 5:49 PM

Debate over Jewish religious boundary begins to heat up

GOOD answer!!! The whole thing makes some of the smartest people in the world look STUPID! As you say, the USA is the freest place in the world to practice ANY religion. There can easily be an orthodox rabbinical decree that the boundaries of this free country are the boundaries in which the orthodox can consider and official ERUV. After all an ERUV is just a scam phony way to get around ancient and truly antiquated rules anyway." Oct 1, 10 6:50 PM

whoops! just found an anti Semite! Israel is one of the most productive and important countries in the world. Medicine, science, invention and technological gifts to the world exceed all others. They are our strongest and most important ally and what stands between us and the islamic nightmare. The entire world should be supporting this extraordinary little country BUT for jealousy, envy and anti-antisemitism. Islam is out to destroy Israel AND ALL OF US. Only the worst of fools would equate it with islam" Oct 1, 10 7:00 PM

You think a one inch in diameter black dot is a A SIGN???....wow!
Do you think ANYONE will ever notice it?" Oct 1, 10 7:12 PM

I think the idea of an Eruv as well as MOST rules and evasions of rules that are part of the three major religions of 5000, 3000, 2000, and 1400 years ago are all pretty obsolete in the 21st century. All are speculative interpretations of bibles and korans that bear no relation to what was supposedly said and written those millenia ago. That there are intelligent people who are irrational and illogical who want to preserve these traditions is indisputable. Where it has NO effect on the rest of us it should be condoned and ignored. A supposedly legitimate Eruv needs permission from a governmental authority. It does not affect any others Where it DOES infringe on our lives, Religious attempts to infringe on our rights should be fought to the death. An eruv is NOT Sharia!!!" Oct 1, 10 7:33 PM

Peconic Land Trust Hopes New Approach Will Help Save Farms

I have said it several times in letters and discussions. IF they need money, that piece of land in Sagaponack center is worth $4,000,000 to $5,000,000 VACANT,
The HOVEL will devalue it by HALF. AND it will cost hundreds of thousands to restore it and ruin the land with it!!!

Amagansett Festival Organizers Consider Moving Concert To Airport

I hope they do not expect to curtail air traffic on the very busy August weekend. But if they don't, there will be plenty of aircraft noise. That venue makes NO sense at all!
The entire idea is pretty hair-brained to begin with. NOBODY wants or need it on the east end. Try Riverhead. Anyone from here who wants it can get there easily" Feb 14, 11 4:30 PM

Sagaponack Considers Committee To Help Manage Its Tree Population

While trying to get the major and dangerous dead tree opposite the post office/general store removed after the central park zoo accident, I was told by Sagaponack village Hall that the Town of Southampton and/or the DOT were responsible. AND that seemed to be true. Sagaponack DOES pay a lot of taxes to SH. Who are CW arborists who just appeared in Sagaponack and may be getting a $100,00 contract to "Maintain trees? i Take care of the trees in front of my property, as each homeowner should. LIPA prunes trees that threaten the lines. Mr. Locheim is also doing the right thing on HIS property. " Oct 20, 11 9:15 AM

Eruv Application Is Filed With Quogue Village

Well, first of all, a 1 inch round piece of wood is NOT a religious symbol. Simply a boundary marker that will mean nothing to ANYONE other than fundamentalists no different from ALL the other fundamentalists in the world. Only difference here is that our local ones do not kill people over their beliefs.
That said: Jews being rational logical people should be able to find a way around all this embarrassing conflict....as they usually do with most religious things that are inconvenient, and the very essence of an eruv is just that sort of distortion of "Talmud" etc. A way around the laws. Like the elevators that now are set to stop on every floor of a skyscraper on Saturday so god forbid they have to push a button on Sabbath. The idea of a personal Guide/Map would be just such a logical move. But probably the Hasidim if there ARE ANY THERE WOULD OBJECT STRENUOUSLY TO THAT. I am with the JPO to the E" Jan 24, 12 6:14 PM

I reiterate, I am against the subterfuge of an eruv which allows some to get around their own religious dictates. However I laugh at the idea that a little round piece of wood will infringe on ANYONE's rights. It is NOT a christmas tree, cross, crescent etc. The only ones who will ever see them are the ones who have to search them out so they can be legal, and not sin..." Jan 30, 12 4:23 PM

Quogue Village Rejects Application For Religious Boundary; EEEA Plans To Sue

Great Logic. You are right!. All the rabbi has to do is tell his orthodox that HE as the local "authority" states the boundaries of the eruv, and they can then use it and not be sinners!
The "eruv" is just one of many examples of how the orthodox get around the supposed rules of their....and my religion." May 23, 12 4:07 PM

Summer Season Sees Lots Of Planes, Lots Of Complaints At East Hampton Airport

Local pilots have not aligned with noisy aircraft but are as disturbed by them as those on the ground who are affected. Local pilots have been illegally deprived of safe, paved runways, automatic weather reporting, cleared approaches, deer fencing because of the Town's refusal to meet its Master Plan and Grant Assurance obligations or take FAA funds in the misguided, as soon to be shown in court, belief that not taking such funds in any way will contribute to mitigation of noise when the opposite is true. A well maintained airport with the assistance of FAA funds and FAA support for reasonable regulation of noisy aircraft would have produced positive noise abatement long ago." Aug 5, 15 12:14 PM

Group Urges East Hampton Town To Buy Montauk Airport To Head Off Headaches

Proves Gruber's commitment to lies and deception.
NO POSSIBLE way Montauk airport could be used for jets.
NO way those taking helicopters to HTO are going to take them to Montauk and take 45 minutes or more to get back to East Hampton and Southampton.
You have to admit. DG is persistent in making it appear that a handful of people represent most of the Town to induce it to close the airport so he and his cronies can develop the site. See him lecturing the Town Board in 2001, long before noise was an issue, on better utilization of airport land https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0t52Xvjco0" Feb 15, 17 5:52 PM
