Southampton Town Board places road construction projects under microscope

So the town did not get its roads paved because it would have cost the paving companies too much money. Wow! Who does our superintendent of Highways work for, the paving companies or the people? I invite everyone to see how much money is donated to Bill Masterson's campaign account.

My favorites are the thousands of dollars from companies up the island. This kind of pay to play here in Southampton must end!

East End community struggling to recruit and retain doctors

Davidf...that is an incredible number. No wonder why we are loosing talented doctors out here. I hope that we as a people start to wise up about the problems with the insurance companies and our health care system. The Insurance companies and HMO’s have too much say over our health choices and they control the monies. The system is not working well. As for this situation, I hope that some how Dr’s Diaz and Garabedian are able to stay on the South Fork." Feb 17, 09 5:13 PM

Davidf, that is right insurance companies are in the business of making money. That is one of the reasons why our health care system is not working well. Doctors, nurses, specialists, and hospitals should be making money, not CEO’s of insurance companies. Because of this we are loosing two great doctors, Garabedian and Diaz. I wonder what we can do right now to keep them here for the children of the East End." Feb 18, 09 7:21 PM

Southampton Town Board places road construction projects under microscope

Terry, you specifically mention Pope's contributors. Have you looked at the campaign donations to our highway superintendent’s campaign account (address above)? He gets huge donations in years that he is not even running for office. He then spends the money. Please look at all of the money that he gets and who is giving this man so much money. Then read the article about why he did not pave our roads even when he had contract prices locked. He was helping the paving companies who donated to him. We need public officials who will make decisions on behalf of the people not contributors." Feb 18, 09 7:42 PM

Baykeeper sues over Dockers dock plans

I wonder if the Southampton Town Republican committee will be having their "lobster bake" at Dockers again this year? Gee...I wonder how many of the Southampton Town Trustees (all Republican) went to the Dockers, GOP fundraiser last year. This "pay to play" thing here in Southampton must end. Let's give our government back to the people of the town. By the way, how long do you think that it will be before Dockers askes for an extension to its new marina. " Feb 19, 09 8:25 AM

Southampton Town Justice Court relocation to go forward

How could this have ever happened? Wasn't the reciever of taxes going overt here? But instead Kiernan gets her office renovated. It must be nice to have your mother on the executive committee of the Southampton Town Republicans." Feb 21, 09 7:45 AM

Federal auditors will examine Southampton Town's 2007 financial books

Hampton (Westhampton)--Those donations DO NOT go to all parties. The Southampton (SH) Dems have not received any money from paving companies. In addition, here are some important numbers from the last three years (06-08). The SH Republicans made 487,904 in campaign contributions. Most of it is from businesses and a much from sources outside of SH Town. With all of the boards made up of Republicans, business needs to give to the GOP to get what they want. The SH Dems made 162,155 in campaign contributions. Virtually all was contributed by individuals and from sources inside SH Town. (Source-NYS Campaign Finance) It is a relief to see that we are asking for a state audit,as we have lost confidence in our Supervisor and it is also great to have a board member asking for an ethics board review…oh yea…that board is also controlled by the Republicans." Southampton Town drafts wish list for stimulus funds

And with he deplorable conditions of the roads in some places, the highway superintendent, Mastersen choose not to pave them because it would have cost the paving companies (Major GOP donors) too much money. You are right NS Citizen we need the town to take care of the taxpaying citizens. This "pay to play" in Southampton must stop!" Feb 22, 09 8:44 AM

Former comptroller brought in to look at Southampton Town capital budget

The Supervisor is the chief financial officer of the town. I am appalled at the way she handled her transition. Spread sheets existed in our very own data base and they were not being used? This is inexcusable! Add to that, Kabot authorized work on town hall and a move for the Justice Court and she had no idea how much money she had on hand. Linda Kabot has dropped the ball, and we the taxpayers will be paying for her misguided style of leadership.
Mr Jones, thank you for being responsible about this. Perhaps now the other councilpeople and the taxpayers will be able to get REAL numbers about what is acually being spent in the town of Southampton." Feb 22, 09 12:38 PM

Republican majority on Southampton Town Board quashes plan to restructure financial department

After living with the current leadership, it is clear that the Town of Southampton needs a major financial shake-up. The current group does not seem to know what they are doing...That includes our current supervisor. A-T-H has been asking for real numbers for a year, and she is an elected official, a councilwoman. If she cannot get real numbers then how can the rest of us get the bottom lines from the Supervisors office. I welcome this reorganization. After reading the article, this is not going to cost the taxpayers any more than what they are currently paying. Enough is enough, lets get qualified people on this." Feb 24, 09 11:19 AM

What is ONE UPMANSHIP? It sounds to me like Linda Kabot protests too much. Perhaps if Kabot had any idea of how to lead, we would not be in this mess. Oh well, I guess we will stay with the same group who could not figure this out in a year. "Bring in the state."" Feb 25, 09 2:30 PM

Hey Davidf...do you want a job? The Supervisors office could use a bit of direction in this area. I agree that A T-H found the right person. I hope that the majority will seriously reconsider this reorganization in town hall. A T-H has good, clear ideas and Kabot is doing her best to put down those initiatives. Linda Kabot is showing her leadership style by crushing good ideas which will work well for the people of the town. This obstructionism seems to be one of the biggest problems in town hall. Supervisor has bone to pick over councilwoman's dog

Nancy Graboski! Shame on you!! Do represent town employees "Afraid of loosing their jobs"? How can you make such an accusation without ANY proof. It is obvious that you will do whatever the Supervisor wants you to do. You are both attacking the councilwomen who is asking the tough questions about the town finances. With all of the important issues the town faces, this is what you choose to comment upon.
Again, Nancy, You are such a disappointment.
" Mar 4, 09 2:16 PM

This is Linda Kabot trying to drag others down. It is her leadership style. By the way, well said, PhilippeB.
Now...can our chief financial officer, Linda Kabot, please justify our capital budget and stop sniping and do your job.

Southampton Republican Party chairman says Kabot is not a lock to secure nomination

Kabot...Linda Kabot has had her chance! Look at the state of affairs in Southampton Town. How can she contain town costs if she does not know them?? The board members have been asking for the numbers and Kabot is not providing them because she can't. The supervisor is a poor example of a financial leader.
Yes, Lind Kabot has had her chance.

Kabot claims bad record keeping led to financial mess

Bad record keeping? Bad Supervisor! Why this was not recognized last year at this time is a testament to the incompetence of our town supervisor and the person (Richard Blowes) she appointed to oversee the town finances. " Mar 18, 09 9:27 PM

North of Highway....I am giving Kabot the benefit of the doubt when I stated, "Why was this not recognized last year at this time?" If her assertions are correct, this mess existed last year and she has not chosen to deal with it until other board members demanded that something be done.
Our town government needs to be given back to the people. No more "wink and blink smoke and mirrors" or whatever has been happening in our town hall. Hey, with 25 years of experience, perhaps you can help. The supervisor is not exactly the most capable of leaders.

Kabot claims bad record keeping led to financial mess

ONE POLITICAL MACHINE-
Common Sense said, "If the Democrats sweep Town hall next election, we would just replace one political machine for another." I respectfully disagree. Look at our Southampton Town GOP. Their grasp over our Town government is complete. Look where they get their money and how they have majorities on every board. Cannusio, Heaney, Kabot or whoever, they have been and WILL be controlled by the Southampton GOP. This is exactly what George Washington warned against because when there is such control, the power is removed from the people and is held by the party leaders. In our case, it is the Southampton Town Republican Committee. The Southampton Democrats do not even come close to that kind of inappropriate influence. Common Sense…It will take five to ten years of Democratic town boards to change the makeup of the other appointed boards. We have only one machine on Southampton Town.

Southampton Town officials: Capital budget is short $4.9 million

Really, Bill Jones you are going to pin this on a staffer in a previous administration? When are you all going to take responsibility for this? The Supervisor is the CEO of out town, and for the Deputy supervisor to lay some nebulous blame is unbecoming of the office that you hold." Mar 21, 09 8:48 PM

Our supervisor spent money that we did not have. She authorized renovations in town hall. She made the decision to move the justice court to Hampton Bays rather than the receiver of taxes, increasing that project by millions and had a new slate roof put on town hall. She is raising our taxes by the maximum….Now what? " Mar 23, 09 8:57 PM

GOP may not back Schneiderman

I am glad that Mr. Schneiderman has withdrawn from the Southampton Republican machine. The leaders of that party have dominated Southampton Town Hall for too many years and I bet that they are not to happy with those who do not toe their party line. The leaders of the SH Republican Party do not represent the SH Republicans that I know. Here here Jay!!" Mar 26, 09 4:28 PM

Venerable radio host Paul Sidney, 69, dies

Paul Sidney’s voice echoed in our family home for forty five years, I will always remember him and WLNG. Thank you WLNG for remaining an owner operated station when so many have sold to large communication companies. You are an important part of our community." Apr 3, 09 4:47 PM

Councilwoman closer to deciding on supervisor

Anna Throne-Holst has been asking the questions that led to the recent inquiries as to the capital budget. Without her we would not even know about this financial mess, this and the fact that she is not owned by any political party makes her the right candidate. Southampton Town deserves to have a Supervisor who acts on behalf of the everyone in the town. She would have my vote!" Apr 8, 09 9:51 AM

Bill Masterson says he will retire after 20 years of service

Masterson was done four years ago because he received the lowest number of votes of any Republican in 05', winning by a nail-biting 285 votes. Masterson this year admitted to the Town Board that he did not pave our roads because it would have cost the paving companies too much money even though the town had contract prices locked. I hope that we can get someone who will do the job for the people of the town rather than a same new Republican paving company owner." Apr 8, 09 11:24 PM
