Southampton Town is prepared to withdraw lawsuit over Aldrich Lane park

"It was not immediately clear if the residents who sued the village would continue with their lawsuit." Now that that resident, Mr. Berkoski, has been appointed to the planning board behind closed doors one week before the deadline for filing applications, I would assume he would drop his suit.

Shame on Ms. Holst for agreeing to threaten the village with a lawsuit in the first place. The appellate court ruled that gathering at the park, no matter who you are, is a right protected by the first amendment." Jan 26, 10 2:22 PM

Please explain how I am incorrect." Jan 26, 10 4:43 PM

Let me clarify before you respond. As stated here in the press in a previous article on the appellate court ruling, "The attorney for Southampton Village, Richard DePetris, who is representing the municipality in this matter, said that the appellate court’s decision supports the village’s stance on how free speech is involved in the matter. The village maintains that forbidding day laborers to solicit work in Aldrich Park is a violation of day laborer’s First Amendment right to free speech. The panel of judges that heard the case in the Appellate Division agreed with that position, Mr. DePetris explained."

Perhaps you disagree with how I phrased my comment, but the fact are clear." Jan 26, 10 4:47 PM

The case made on behalf of the defendants was that the use of that park, CPF or not, was protected under the constitution. I grant I might have misstated when I said "ruled" but the fact remains that the court agreed with that premise.

As I stated, the only person who stands to gain from pursuing this lawsuit is Mr. Berkoski who recently received an extremely questionable political appointment. Mayor Epley never had plans to build anything on that plot of land and complaining that having people gather in an empty field is a misuse of CPF funds is ludicrous." Jan 26, 10 5:39 PM

From this very article, "In November, the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court reversed an earlier ruling that banned the day laborers from gathering at Aldrich Park while seeking employment, saying it violated the workers’ constitutional rights. As a result, the workers can legally gather at the park."

" Jan 27, 10 3:17 PM

I don't believe it is illegal, but it sure is unethical. These political favors have go to stop." Jan 28, 10 10:28 AM

Southampton Town Board comes to compromise on committee

Now they need to agree to undo the Berkoski appointment to the planning board and start over with new applications and a transparent and open appointment interview process. " Jan 28, 10 2:10 PM

Then you are a hypocrite. " Jan 29, 10 10:17 AM

EQme, sorry for the misunderstanding. I was calling rep rep a hypocrite, not you. Unfortunately the way this boar works when you respond to a comment it puts them all in one line and since we both responded to reg rep, it appear as though I was responding to you. Not the case. I agree with you. I am call reg rep a hypocrite because she calls for openness and cooperation and then says it is OK to appoint Berkoski behind closed doors before the application deadline even occured. " Jan 29, 10 12:50 PM

He was appointed to the board one week before applications were due so how many qualified candidates were ignored? Is this how you want your local government to behave? I don't." Jan 31, 10 11:53 AM

Once again, this is not a party issue. These board positions, especially the planning board, carry a lot of weight. To appoint someone without an open, transparent, public interview process and without considering ALL qualified candidates reeks of cronyism. To appoint someone who was and might still be a co-plaintiff in a law suit is disgusting - regardless of party." Jan 31, 10 11:56 AM

Proposal for a new 7-Eleven on County Road 39

We do not need another 7-eleven and we don't need to use day laborers as an excuse. A 7-eleven will have an adverse impact on traffic and aesthetics. We need to be encouraging local business." Feb 22, 10 1:45 PM

Local politicians consider congressional campaign

Jay Schneiderman from Republican, to Democrat, to Independent - we have enough opportunistic congresspeople in Washington willing to trade their beliefs for a quick glide on the prevailing political winds. He is the wrong candidate for any party - just putting an "I" after your name does not make you an outsider." Mar 3, 10 4:26 PM

Bishop will vote yes on health care reform bill

Despite the far-rights' lies and ludicrous cries of "socialism" and "government take over," both of which this bill most certainly is not, we will finally get meaningful healthcare reform in this country. This bill will be a foundation on which to build the goal of universal coverage.

We have been given a very clear insight into the great philosophical chasm that exists between the two parties: on the right - tax cuts to the wealthy (which contributed 2 trillion dollars to our deficit), giving corporations unfettered access to politicians and a general "look out for number one" attitude that brought this country to the verge of collapse - morally and financially. On the left: the ideal that America is at its best when we are looking out for ALL of our citizens.

This bills passing will be proof that, in the end, hope and courage will always triumph over hatred and fear. Representative Bishop was elected to do this - and elections have consequences. " Mar 19, 10 4:52 PM

President signs historic health care legislation into law with Bishop's support

Congressman Bishop, thank you for allowing Long Island to be a part of this historic moment. As SHNative said, those of us who support so do so wholeheartedly. You have done what you were elected to do and now we will look to you to continue to fight to make this legislation even stronger in the future. The crazies will attack and scream and yell, but, in the end, you did what was best for your constituents and that will be remembered." Mar 23, 10 5:17 PM

Levy switches parties, announces run for governor

This kind of blatant opportunism is, quite frankly, disgusting. Republicans and Democrats know that politicians who switch parties show that they have no real convictions and simply float on whatever they believe to be the prevailing winds. " Mar 23, 10 5:19 PM

Shame on the Southampton Town Planning Board. " Mar 23, 10 5:21 PM

Levy switches parties, announces run for governor

If Levy is not loyal to either party, then why declare a party in the first place? Why not call yourself and independent?

He was a democrat when it was popular to be a democrat - even though his ideology did not fit the party platform. Now that he believes it is popular to be a Republican he switches the letter after his name. That is not conviction, that is opportunism at its worst. " Mar 23, 10 7:01 PM

Local stationery and office supply shops react to Staples planned for Bridgehampton Commons

"Staples, which also has a store in Riverhead, plans to open a 13,000-square-foot store in the Bridgehampton Commons at the end of the summer and, last Thursday, March 18, received permission from the Southampton Town Planning Board to get a building permit"" Mar 23, 10 7:02 PM

Tell that to the small business owner who gets squeezed out by big corporations who already have a sufficient presence in the area. I have read your posts and I realize you are entirely beholden to a far right policy, but the free market is not always the answer." Mar 23, 10 7:10 PM

Bishop will vote yes on health care reform bill

You need to bone up on your history:

"This is the largest tax bill in history," the Republican leader fumed. The reform "is unjust, unworkable, stupidly drafted and wastefully financed."

And that wasn't all. This "cruel hoax," he said, this "folly" of "bungling and waste," compared poorly to the "much less expensive" and "practical measures" favored by the Republicans.

"We must repeal," the GOP leader argued. "The Republican Party is pledged to do this."

That was Republican presidential nominee Alf Landon in a September 1936 campaign speech. He based his bid for the White House on repealing Social Security. Sound familiar?

And, for a more recent example, how about both Bushes pushing to privatize social security?

President signs historic health care legislation into law with Bishop's support

Please clearly define how a majority vote on the floor of the House by our ELECTED representatives "stands against the founders". Please do not use rhetoric, but facts.

You clearly want to make this some sort of class battle. You have a deep resentment against what you see as "rich liberals" but this bill will help the poor, not the rich. It was George Bush and the republicans who gave 2 trillion dollars in unpaid for tax cuts to the rich. An activist republican court that granted corporations the same rights as individuals. If you are fighting for liberty and equality then you are supporting the wrong party." Mar 24, 10 8:08 AM

Your hatred and anger are really misplaced. This person has a right to support any candidate they choose. I have read many of your comments on these boards and not once have you tried to take a positive stand. You do not offer viable alternatives but jump up and down and shout outrageous insults. If you feel something is broken then attempt a positive step to fix it. Kicking others might make you feel better, but it will not solve the issues that you claim to care about.

Tim Bishop is an elected representative whose vote reflects the desires of those who put him into office. That is what he was elected to do and, despite threats and lies from people like you, he has done it. " Mar 24, 10 8:14 AM

Levy switches parties, announces run for governor

No, I do not mean Independence party. What I said was he could declare himself an Independent. "No such thing"? Have you heard of Bernie Sanders and Joe Lieberman? Please think before you write." Mar 24, 10 8:17 AM

Please do not be swayed by lies of the far right. They use fear and hatred to make their point.

What will insurance cost you? Try this link to the Washington Post's cost calculator http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/politics/what-health-bill-means-for-you

In the US poverty level is considered $22,000/year for a family of four. This calculator shows that these people will be eligible for medicare - they will not be paying $5,900/month - that statement is patently false.
