Tuckahoe developer defends plan

Mr. Morrow, please do not threaten us with the "less desirable option" scheme. So many residents have expressed their opposition to this project, yet you remain steadfast - why? Are you really interested in this community? No one disputes your right to build on property you own as it was zoned when you purchased said property. That is, of course, your right, but now both you and supervisor Holst have used the "better than the alternative" bait and switch, but it simply will not fly. " Sep 1, 10 5:36 PM

To SH Press, just read your entire "story". You have basically given Mr. Morrow a big ad smack dab in the middle of your home page. This "article" does not present any credible rebuttals to any of his statements. Did you even bother to question any of his assertions? You don't even question him about his ludicrous threat to bring more kids into the district and to increase tax burdens if he does not get his way?

This is nothing more than an advertisement disguised as an article." Sep 2, 10 9:22 AM

I completely agree with progressnow. Providing these idealized renderings is a step too far. The article itself is enough of a fluff piece. Making a developer's artist renderings available for download on a newspaper site is a terrible idea and, quite frankly, suspect. " Sep 10, 10 10:48 AM

Three Republican candidates will battle on Tuesday for right to challenge Bishop in November

The teaparty has forced Republican politicians to turn their backs on sensibility, decency, and moderation and instead turn to fear, hatred, and distrust. The teaparty political philosophy is a cancer upon our public discourse which sprang, not from grassroots anger or frustration, but from the pockets of powerful business interests like the Koch brothers and ultra-conservative political groups like Dick Armey's freedom works. It is a direct result of the election of our first black president and fear of an increasingly diverse population. The teaparty has given rise to birthers and truthers and nut-jobs like this "preacher" in Florida.

Tepartiers, like their republican counterparts, believe there is no role for gov't in our lives except to help multi-national corporations like BP or to prevent women from the right to choose by forcing their "Christian" values upon all people of all religions and ethnicities.

The teapartiers and their leaders, people like Gingrich and Palin and Beck and Beohner, have taken a solemn remembrance of 9/11 and turned it into a political football, engendering hate and divisiveness on a day that once brought us all together. Just like Bush and Cheney, the lie us into conflict because they believe that a fearful population will turn to them and away from rational thought and, regretfully, their disgusting tactics often work.

These three carpetbaggers are an outgrowth of that ultra-conservative, astro-turf movement. They have come here not to try and solve the real problems that face us, but to "take out Timmy". They use abortion and 9/11 as tools of fear in their quest to ride the coattails of what will be a short-lived revolution of fear and hate over compassion and good governance.

What is happening now is no different than what Newt attempted to do in 1994. Just like then, the same players are still around plying their same despicable tactics to the same group of unwitting tools in their fight to destroy the middle class.

If the switch to republicans takes place, it will last no longer than the last one and folks will have to face the fact that they allowed fear and anger to turn them to the same old failed policies and obstructionist players as the last time. " Sep 11, 10 1:27 PM

"Perish those who said our good things before we did."

Aelius Donatus" Sep 12, 10 10:50 AM

I expect the most radical of these candidates to win on Tuesday and then Tim Bishop's road to re-election will be that much smoother. Just as in Nevada where Harry Reid had no chance of ever being re-elected until Sharon Angle stormed onto the scene, the teaparty is doing a wonderful job for the dems!" Sep 12, 10 1:23 PM

A call for PDD moratorium in Southampton Town; Supervisor willing to consider dropping controversial planning tool

YES to a PDD moratorium! But we must remain ever vigilant because many developers will use a moratorium as a "cooling off" period hoping folks will forget. We won't, Mr. Morrow. " Sep 30, 10 1:07 PM

Rechlers pick up demolition permit applications for Canoe Place Inn

Let them tear it down, but put in place the pdd moratorium and don't let them build" Oct 1, 10 4:04 PM

"As part of the proposal, the Rechlers would preserve the outside of the inn and provide a public walkway along the east side of Shinnecock Canal. In exchange, the town would have had to approve a PDD and allow the developers to build the luxury condominiums where the Tide Runners and 1 North Steakhouse restaurants now stand."" Does Throne-Holst have support for a Planned Development District moratorium?

Fleming, Graboski, Nuzzi and Malone insist that they do not need a moratorium because they already have the power to simply refuse any PDD - OK, then in a show of good faith, why not just say no to the most egregious of all PDD-land-grab abuses and deny the Tuckahoe Mall rezoning?

The reason we need to abolish the PDD is because we cannot trust our elected officials to act in the community's best interest even when the community speaks in one loud, unified, and determined voice. " Oct 7, 10 2:26 PM

Saks Fifth Avenue closes Southampton store this past weekend; Water Mill's Citarella also closed

Realityfirst, she is most definitely not lying. The democratic national committee just raised a record amount of money, $16 million dollars - 80% of which came from individuals donating $200 and under (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1010/43081.html)

Now, while the RNC raised substantially less, in the same amount of time groups like the Chamber of commerce and Karl Rove's super-pac outspent democrats by tens of millions of dollars, the majority of which came from large donors, many of whom are from overseas.

Opensecrets.org does not account for the spending of Karl Rove, Dick Armey and the Chamber of Commerce whose donors, under protections granted to them by an activist supreme court, are allowed to remain anonymous. The chamber of commerce has pledged to spend up to $75 million dollars to help republicans get elected, but they refuse to reveal the source of those dollars.

There is way too much money in politics on both sides, but there is no doubt that the republicans are benefiting from the Citizens United ruling in a way the democrats could only imagine." Oct 7, 10 3:23 PM

Clashing ideas about jobs dominate congressional race

In the end, Long Islanders will make the right choice and vote for Bishop, a man who lives in and fights for our community. Good news from Newsday:

In a race Republicans thought was ripe for the picking, Rep. Tim Bishop has a double-digit lead over GOP challenger Randy Altschuler in their heated multimillion-dollar battle, according to a Siena Research Institute poll released Wednesday.

The poll shows that Bishop (D-Southampton) leads Altschuler by 12 points - 51 to 39 among likely voters - with nine percent undecided in the first congressional district, which covers eastern Suffolk." Oct 14, 10 2:41 PM

Thomas J. Donahue, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, has said that outsourcing is “good for America”. That very same Chamber of Commerce is running an ad in Missouri against the Democratic candidate that starts with the claim "In the past 2 years Missouri lost 120,000 jobs" well, guess what, 102,000 of those jobs were lost to outsourcing. No surprise the chamber supports Altschuler.

The chamber of commerce is currently spending 75 million dollars to defeat Democrats and elect Republicans who blocked an attempt to stop outsourcing, and the chamber, which solicits and receives millions of dollars in foreign donations, refuses to disclose their donors. 84% of all Americans say we have a right to know who is funding political ads. The chamber disagrees. Is that the America our founders imagined?" Oct 14, 10 9:14 PM

More good news from the Wall Street Journal: "Bishop leads 51% to 39% in the Siena poll. Most political consultants view the 50% threshold as a “magic number” for incumbents, indicating a high likelihood of surviving a challenge. "

Vote to keep jobs in America." Oct 15, 10 11:28 AM

I inadvertently clicked like. There are people that live in America today that care about this country. People who would prefer to spend their time and energy creating jobs here. Caring for people here. Tim Bishop is one of those people.

We all have a choice of what we want to do in our lives, for some, like Altschuler, and perhaps you since you seem to support him, money is the be all and end all. For others it is community, family, and friends. The republicans and their offshoot teapartiers believe that being American means making money. They worship the "Free market" and disdain those less fortunate than themselves. Make no mistake, Altschuler intentionally chose to make million by shipping American jobs over seas. He cannot rationalize the loss of tens of thousands of jobs by saying it allowed him to create a few jobs here.

So be it. Let Altschuler do whatever he likes to make money, but don't expect us to elect him to an office that is about character and how to better the lives of your fellow Americans." Oct 15, 10 6:02 PM

This Year, An Election Year Battle For Bishop

I attended the Hampton Bays congressional debate and what was abundantly clear was that Randy Altschuler is not qualified to run for office and that Tim Bishop is. Mr. Altschuler did nothing more than parrot tired republican/tea party talking points. As all republicans have done this election season, Mr. Altschuler said we must lower the deficit, but we cannot raise taxes or allow the Bush tax cuts for the rich to expire. When asked specifically what he would cut in order to reduce the deficit, Mr. Altschuler would not answer - could not answer. In fact, what he chose to do instead was to reply in a typically elusive manner by saying something along the lines of “I have an answer, but I am not going to tell you because Mr. Bishop does not really want to know.” A childish cop out that did not play well with those in attendance.

Tim Bishop spoke eloquently and with the confidence that comes only from having real answers and real experience. Mr. Bishop even defended his vote for TARP knowing full-well that it was an extremely unpopular thing to do. He did not run from his vote or attempt to make excuses, but gave a reasoned and sensible answer as to why he did what he did as the country teetered on the edge of a second great depression. He came out strongly in defense of repealing DADT and even admonished the president for appealing a recent Federal court ruling against the policy.

Mr. Altschuler is a carpetbagger. He came to our district to protect the corporate business interests of himself and his friends overseas because he believed that Mr. Bishop's seat was ripe for picking in this atmosphere of tea party madness, but he forgot that integrity matters. Mr. Altschuler likes to say he created 250 jobs in New York, but what he does not tell you is how. He does not mention that in order to create those jobs he sent tens of thousands of middle-class American jobs overseas.

Mr. Altschuler is justifiably proud of his humble beginnings. His father having left when he was only eight years old, Altschuler was raised by a single mother with little money or advantage. Mr. Altschuler and his mother are to be admired for having the strength and courage to rise above those difficult circumstances. What Mr. Altschuler seems incapable of understanding, however, is that in making millions outsourcing jobs to India, he was depriving another single mother and her child of the same opportunity to overcome adversity while Mr. Bishop was working diligently to give that family a leg up." Town Board Tries To More Clearly Define Benefits Of PDDs

Cash in lieu of a REAL public benefit? This is the board's answer to the pleas of so many voters, the legalization of developer bribes?

I can only imagine how this would work: "OK, Mr. Developer, we will let you build your mega-mall, but you have to pay us for the privilege" and years later that money is used to pay down some unpaid for town mismanagement and the public never sees any benefit. If this is the best they can do then this board needs to go, from the Supervisor on down, regardless of party affiliation. " Oct 28, 10 8:52 AM
