Code enforcement shuts down soup kitchen at Southampton Tire

Faceless, I agree, you do not need to attempt to defend yourself. The blatant ignorance, hate and racism displayed by you, hamptons surfer, icecreamman, et al is indefensible. The truth is that you and your peers are living in a world that you do not understand. You have been left behind intellectually and culturally and so you fight and scream and hate. I would suggest you try to overcome your hate and find a way to accept the world in which you live. Adapt or implode. " Apr 4, 09 10:47 AM

Why is an environmental impact study considered "frivolous" If Ferrris does not want to spend tax payer dollars fighting the lawsuit, then just agree to the study. Simple." Apr 4, 09 11:07 AM

surfer, I didn't call you dumb, so that is clearly your own insecurity shining through. What I called you is ignorant. An ignorant person is one who lacks knowledge or comprehension of a certain thing. You do not understand modern society, therefore you are ignorant of societal trends. You do not understand immigration and immigrants, therefore you are ignorant of the facts of immigration and the lives of immigrants. You do not understand the kind act of one human being feeding another, therefore you are cruel not because you are dumb, but because you lack basic humanity. I am happy to debate the issue with anyone capable of rational thought. I like that you feel the need to defend yourself because every time you respond is one more opportunity for others to hear how insidious is the sin of ignorance." Apr 4, 09 5:36 PM

Alternatives sought after village shuts down Southampton Tire soup kitchen

Only in Southampton could helping those in need be considered illegal. The fear and hatred displayed on these boards should give us all a reason to stop and reflect on the spread of ignorance in our community. Unlike Mr. Wedell, the day laborers are not paid to stand at the 7-11, they are there because they need work and they'll gladly take the jobs that Americans will not. I would, however, venture to guess that if Mr. Wedell was in need of a meal, the Sisters of Mercy would not turn him away. They are not there to feed illegals, they are there to feed people. Councilwoman closer to deciding on supervisor

A note to Frank Wheeler and others like him: Stop attempting to use immigration as a basis for all of your arguments. The country has moved on. Fear is the tactic of a neo-con regime that no longer holds sway. Accept the revolution of humanity and liberalism and move on." Apr 8, 09 7:35 PM

Bridget325 it is no surprise that you have decided to rant and rave without knowing the facts. The Sisters of Mercy and other involved do indeed teach immigrants to speak English AND help them to become citizens INCLUDING providing accounting services so that they can PAY TAXES.

Squeaky, I have no need for "cheap labor". When I say the country has moved on, that is based on fact. A majority of polls show that most Americans are more concerned with education, jobs, energy, health care and environment than they are with immigration. It is NOT a "major concern for most of the country." Granted, there are always raving zealots who blame immigration for all of societies ills, but a younger, more enlightened population does not share your unfounded fear. " Apr 9, 09 1:17 PM

I have attended a number of immigration conferences/discussions in our area and I can tell you they always play out in exactly the same way as the discussions on this board. Those in favor of finding a humane solution to the immigration "problem" are, more often than not, thoughtful, considerate, calm. Those who only want immigrants deported are, more often than not, loud, rude, inconsiderate and unwilling to listen. " Apr 21, 09 10:02 AM

Knife wielded in clash between immigrant and protester

It is well known that the anti-immigrant protesters like Mr. King have been physically and mentally abusive to day laborers for years. They have spat upon, pushed and hit these men with their signs. They have verbally assaulted and threatened these workers and it was only a matter of time until someone finally had enough.

I do not condone the actions of Mr. Sanchez-Nugra. Weapons are never the answer and, if a crime was committed, he will have to pay. It is important to remember that the article does not accuse Mr. Sanchez-Nuga of doing anything other than wielding a 2 inch knife, perhaps for his own protection. Perhaps because he thought his own life was in danger.

Mr. King and his cohorts have been trying to elicit just this type of response from innocent day laborers so that they could use it as rationalization for their unfounded hatreds. Instead of focusing on the one person who responded to these attacks by the protesters, think about the hundreds of day laborers who stood by and took it when all they wanted was to make a living in a community with an insatiable appetite for their labor and their demise." Apr 23, 09 8:54 AM

Squeaky, I appreciate that you are willing to accept that these people are being treated unfairly by Mr. King and his ilk. I honestly do. My problem is that the question of why they can't go fill in applications instead of standing on the street looking for day labor shows a complete lack of understanding of the plight of these workers and the state of the American job market.

These men have not come here because someone told them they could get a job at WalMart or through an employment agency, they came here (many of them legally) because their friends already here told them that there are people in Southampton that want their tables bussed, their lawns mowed, and their stables cleaned and that there was no one in America willing to do it. They came here because of a demand for manual laborers.

Immigrants do not, and throughout American history have not, taken jobs from Americans. They have filled jobs that have traditionally been filled by immigrants. This country needs immigrant workers, even in a bad economy when work is tough to find for everyone, there is still a demand for their labor and that is why they come.

Many of these men came here because they wanted nothing more than to provide for their wives, their children, their parents. If there were no work here for them, then there would be no immigration problem because they would not come.

What has destroyed the American dream is not hardworking immigrants just trying to survive, but corporate thieves. Wall Street brokers and bankers have destroyed our economy. They have stolen the dream of home ownership. They have played the American people like fools deserving of nothing more than contempt.

To many Americans the immigrant always has been and always will be the scapegoat for all that is wrong. Why? Because it is much easier to attack someone worse off than you than it is to go after those with so much more. Because they do not have the courage to fight the powers that be. A bully always picks on the helpless kid, not the one that might pose a threat. Mr. King and his pals are bullies. " Apr 23, 09 8:50 PM

Student art will be screened from Harbor voters

Ed Drohan should be ashamed of himself. This is the most ridiculous accusation I have heard in some time and further proof that just because you have the time to sit on a school board does not mean you should. Truly reprehensible that anyone would wish to stop children from sharing their artwork with others. Shameful. " Apr 30, 09 4:19 PM

Kabot says town government shoudn't be responsible for soup kitchen

Ms Kabot does not seem to realize the importance of local governments in quality of life issues, especially those that effect the poor and the homeless. While I applaud Ms. Kabot for emphasizing that the issue of feeding the hungry should be separated from the issue of illegal immigration, I believe she is more concerned with keeping her seat on the board then with helping our fellow residents, regardless of their legal status.

When Mayor Epley attempted to implement a humane solution to the day-laborer "issue" Ms. Kabot and her fellow Town Board members sued the village. This was a cheap political tactic that did little more than waste tax payer money on litigation. It showed a disturbing lack of courage in the face of unfounded dissent. It was a victory for anti-immigrant hate-groups from outside of our community and a defeat for Town and Village residents from all sides of the immigration issue.

To say that feeding the hungry of our community is not a government responsibility reeks of the kind of wrong-headed political philosophy most of America rejected in the last presidential election. People need the help of their government and it is the local board members who have an in-person opportunity to make a decisively positive impact on the lives of their neighbors.

If the issue were about feeding homeless and hungry, white American men, women and children it would be political suicide NOT to do something. But Ms Kabot knows as well as the rest of us that were she to help feed “these” people now being helped by private individuals and the Sisters of Mercy, it would be portrayed by the voices of hate, fear, and ignorance as an act of aiding and abetting “illegals”. Government officials should always serve as examples to their constituents. They should always face responsibilities head on. They should never say, “It is not my problem.”

Ms Kabot, hunger knows no legal status and true philanthropy is blind to faith, race, ethnicity, and politics.

Money designated for affordable housing never moved; housing fund in the red

The future of Southampton depends upon affordable housing for teachers, hospital workers, firefighters, police and rescue . . . Think of how many affordable homes could be funded with these "missing" dollars. We seem to keep hearing "Little did we know" from Miss Kabot" May 6, 09 4:09 PM

Southampton Elementary School principal faces uncertain future

courtesy, "This has nothing to do with racism" is a very easy assertion to make if you are not African American or Native American. This may have nothing to do with race, but that does not mean the possibility should not be considered and/or investigated." May 6, 09 4:15 PM
