Turmoil continues in Tuckahoe; commissioner will decide fate of school board

My comment that was removed was a factual retelling of what I witnessed at the Monday night board meeting. Contrary to what Mackt says, Mr. Grimaldi did indeed have a chance to speak. No one blocked him. He went on for more than five minutes and later that night verbally attacked another attendee screaming and yelling for her to shut up. They are trying to make this debate about lies and fear, but in the end I know the voters will support increased representation over the mess we have today." Feb 11, 10 10:18 AM

This very same comment was removed and should be removed again. " Feb 11, 10 11:47 AM

"You remind me of the person I had to tell to shut up at the meeting. " ?! Mr. Grimaldi clearly has some serious issues and a lack of understanding regarding love and compassion. I suggest to all to stop listening and responding to him and his unguided hatred and let's focus instead on positive facts and moving our school forward. Instead of hearing from parents whose children no longer attend the school and who clearly hold personal grudges, lets focus on the students currently in attendance at Tuckahoe and their families.

I would like to thank the petitioners for their very hard work on behalf of all Tuckahoe residents. Increased representation, which this district has apparently been talking about for years, is only a good thing. We need to remove the poison and start healing with a renewed focus on our community and our children. Given a opportunity to do so, I will vote to support the referendum." Feb 11, 10 2:27 PM

A well thought out, intelligent, pragmatic and honest petition for a unified school district was presented to the board just a couple of weeks AFTER Grindle publicly stated her support for such a move - and then she attempted to refuse to even allow discussion. Go to the website created by the petitioners and tell me what you see that is unfair, accusatory or insulting to anyone. It is grindle and people like grimaldi who have turned this into a nasty and ugly conversation. Did you hear the things he said at the board meeting? Have you read the vile things he posted here? You are defending the indefensible and attacking the wrong people. You need to examine the facts and your glaring hypocrisy. " Feb 12, 10 1:38 PM

One more time, you need to refine your accusations, photo friend. The most hateful and vile comments being spewed here come from Mr. Grimaldi on behalf of Sharon Grindle. Ms. Grindle, upon hearing about the referendum, immediately assigned ulterior motives to the petitioners in an article here in the southampton press without ever considering what these words would mean. Yes, call out the "hatred" and "venom" if you must, but do not be prejudice in your accusations otherwise your words become clouded by your hypocrisy. " Feb 12, 10 3:39 PM

Turmoil continues in Tuckahoe; commissioner will decide fate of school board

Teachourkids, how do you know no homework was done by the petitioners? Why make such baseless accusations? "No absentee ballots" - says who?

The point everyone is missing here is that Trustees Grindle and Riccardi voted not to allow the voters of this district, for whom they and you all claim to be so concerned, the right to VOTE on a referendum to increase the size of the board. Do you realize that? They voted to stop their constituents from having a voice. Why? What are they so afraid of? Trustee Grindle would not even allow it on the agenda at the last board meeting. If you don't want Tuckahoe to become a USFD, then just vote against it. Period. But give those of us who do support this change a chance to exercise our right to vote FOR it.

If you are concerned about what the referendum means to you then I suggest you trust neither the board OR the petitioners or some insane poster on a community newspaper blog. Get up off of your couch and go out and find out for yourself. Call the state commissioner or the board of ed or BOCES. Do a little research. All of this nonsense about increased taxes, changes in the name, problems with transfer of bonds, and the rest is sheer hooey. Untrue and meant to block a legitimate action by voters and taxpayers of this district who have every right to do exactly what they did. I hope that the petitioners do appeal the board's decision and that I am given a chance to speak with my vote.

Observant's comments are unfortunately typical of a misguided line of attack against "the petitioners". You are trying to portray those 32 people as some kind of gang or something. Why? Besides, the petitioners have every right to bring that petition to the board and it is up to the DISTRICT to educate the public, not the petitioners, especially as so many seem too lazy to educate themselves. And don't forget, Trustee Grindle attempted to BLOCK the discussion at two separate board meetings so how do you expect someone to answer your questions? Why don't you ask Trustee Grindle why she has chosen to block a referendum which she herself openly supported at a board meeting last month. Ask her why she has chosen not to share the details of how a referendum works. She knows just what the petitioners do. I am amazed at the hypocrisy of posters like Observant. Absolutely amazed.

By the way, if I recall, the website you refer to always said that the date was subject to change. Again, if you had bothered to do a bit of research you would see that these rules are set by the state, not the petitioners, so your anger and accusations are misguided. As an individual citizen if I decide to vote for something is it my duty to convince you to do the same? No. Is it my duty to explain to you the specifics of the legislation? No. You are responsible for educating yourself and voting accordingly.

Please explain to me how a vote is "forced change" Should the referendum be allowed, all eligible voters in Tuckahoe will VOTE yes or no. Like all elections, the district would have to notify the voters and the voters will have to decide how they'd like to vote. That is how a democracy works. All of you trying to portray this as mob rule or mutiny are simply being obstinate and deceitful. To not allow a vote is the opposite of democracy. The board knows exactly what the referendum would mean, but they'd rather allow others to attempt to dissuade you. I will not be dissuaded. " Feb 16, 10 1:20 PM

This referendum is not about your kids! It is not about math scores from two and three years ago! It is not about Linda Rozzi! It is about moving forward. Five board members instead of three. Stop already!" Feb 18, 10 11:43 AM

Bishop will vote yes on health care reform bill

It is the type of fear and ignorance in your posting that would destroy America. Thank goodness that, in the end, you are no more than one of a small, vocal minority who care about nothing but your own personal interests.

Despite your ideological deficiencies, you should rest easier knowing that if this legislation passes you will never have to worry about ending up bankrupt and on the street due to a lack of health care because people like Tim Bishop and Nancy Pelosi fought for all of us - even those who deserve it least." Tuckahoe School budget preview

Funny that Mr. Joseph's failed to mention that he demanded and received something like a $40,000 raise, which is, given the current state of the school's finances and his role in it, completely unwarranted. Furthermore, where is the discussion of an increase of a few hundred thousand dollars in the revised budget which went towards paying off the old superintendent's contract, paying the new superintendent over $750 a day and the additional monies needed to pay for Ms. Grindle's decision to split the superintendent and principle position? More evidence of this board's utter incompetence and why we need increased representation. Oh, and you now how they plan to save money? By cutting teacher's assistance! So much for putting the kids first." Mar 31, 10 4:48 PM

Math program at heart of turmoil in Tuckahoe

Agreed! This is an attempt by Grindle to try to derail a legitimate petition to convert to a UFSD. Tuckahoe residents, even if you do not have kids in the school, you need to follow this debate and that regarding the budget which has increased drastically due to blatant mismanagement. Not just that, but what a one-sided article! As proof of what Grindle says you point to her former bff on the board Theresa Grimaldi and one other disgruntled parent? What about all of those kids from Tuckahoe that consistently finish at the top of their class at Southampton High School? This stinks to high heaven. " Mar 31, 10 4:56 PM

I have heard of at least three very strong candidates that are running for the board to replace riccardi! I cannot wait to vote in a new member and to keep pushing for increased representation so that the future of our school can be discussed and not dictated by one person. To the future! (by the way, I am originally from Sag Harbor and that is why I identify myself as such)" Apr 6, 10 8:39 AM

Nonsense. Test scores have NOT dropped steadily in past years and it is completely irresponsible of you to make such a generalized and false claim. This article is NOT about math scores, this article is about Grindle using math scores as an excuse. She is revealing personnel info she said was completely off limits. She has again proved herself to be a vindictive person willing to say and do anything.

As for the USFD, it would be three members, not two as, thankfully, Riccardi's term is over. Also, Grindle could have chosen to work WITH the petitioners to keep her seat. She could have chosen to work WITH the petitioners to figure out how to convert the school - something she herself championed on a number of occasions. Instead, she chose to attack the petitioners. She chose to publicly impugn everyone who signed that petition without having even attempted to speak to even one of them.

Stop attempting to rewrite history, Sharon." Apr 7, 10 11:16 AM

You are right on, Walt. Ms. Grindle's unethical actions should lead to her immediate dismissal." Apr 7, 10 11:16 AM

teachourkids, your posting is extremely misleading and unfair. If you look at the last available NYS School Report Card what you will see is the following increases in Tuckahoe's middle school:

Grade 6 up 2.8%
Grade 7 up 1.4%
Grade 8 up 727%

Why mislead? You and "your people" are desperately trying to make everything about the poor performance of some students in one grade. Why? Because you support Grindle and she has a personal grudge? She has treated her constituents, parents, teachers, and residents with disdain and contempt.

Again, the entire referendum was and IS about increased representation. The folks I know who are running for Riccardi's seat support a UFSD conversion and, if one of them should be elected, this nonsense will be put to rest. We could have avoided all of this if Sharon had bothered to actually reach out to the petitioners, many of whom have were not involved in the mess three years ago and who simply believed that three people is not enough, then we would not even be here.

As I said before, I am so looking forward to a new day at Tuckahoe with a new board that will, hopefully, treat parent and teachers with the respect and decency they deserve. " Apr 8, 10 3:50 PM

Local launches online picture book writing course

I am sorry, but this class, or any like it, are, quite frankly, a massive waste of money. Unless you'd like to do this for a hobby, forget spending the money. The publishing industry is harder to break into than movies. The market is saturated with "vanity" children's books by Madonna and other stars and children's book already based upon popular tv shows.

It is NOT a good time to be a writer, at least not if you are looking to get published. Yes, it is good to encourage a positive attitude, but you are deceiving folks if you attempt to lead them to believe that taking a course will help them get published." Apr 19, 10 11:33 AM

Local Tea Party movement holds two rallies on Tax Day

Look at the photos: A group of elderly, and probably prosperous, white folks most of whom are no doubt receiving social security and medicare. There taxes are the lowest they've been in decades, but NOW they complain that they are too high? This generation is bankrupting social security and medicare but they are not willing to pay taxes that will save these programs for the next generation.

Selfish and delusional." Apr 21, 10 11:06 AM

The term "teabagger" was first used in reference to tea party members by tea party members themselves. " Apr 21, 10 12:42 PM

It does not matter what you "believe" - a fact is a fact. Americans are paying lower taxes under Obama than anytime in the last forty years. Why do you insist upon misstating the facts? I simply cannot understand this insistence upon lying." Apr 21, 10 12:44 PM

You cannot make these folks understand. Again, at a time when taxes are lower than any other time in the last forty years they are jumping up and down and screaming and yelling about taxes! They are paying much less than they were under their conservative hero Reagan who RAISED taxes.

The tea party movement exists because well-off, well-educated, welll-cared for folks in their 50's - 70's are afraid of a world that is changing before their eyes. " Apr 21, 10 12:47 PM

Taxes for Americans making under $250,000 are the lowest they have been in forty years. Fact, not opinion. Fact. " Apr 21, 10 12:48 PM

You are being childish. Look at the picture, read the latest polls and you will see that tea-partiers are well-educated, well-off, elderly folks who are on social security and medicare but don't want others to enjoy the same.

My post, as you darn well know, was about tea partiers and, specifically those in the pictures accompanying this article. Did I misstate who they are? Look at the photos yourself." Apr 21, 10 12:51 PM

Frightening. The tea party movement is a joke. Seriously. Their hypocrisy is matched only by their lunacy." Apr 21, 10 9:07 PM

Local Tea Party movement holds two rallies on Tax Day

If that were your only beef, no problem, but we have seen the tea party rallies the racist signs, the hypocritical nonsense, the lies about Marxism and socialism, the accusations that our president was not born here, the spitting on a black congress person, the racial and homophobic slurs, the incitement to violence -" Apr 22, 10 6:31 PM

Newt Gingrich said that he expects the Tea Party movement to evolve into "the militant wing of the Republican Party" at a speaking engagement in Pennsylvania on Wednesday night, the York Dispatch reports.

Newt Gingrich! What more can we possibly say. " Apr 22, 10 7:30 PM

How do you suggest we pay for war, social security, medicare and GW's give away to the rich?" Apr 23, 10 11:51 AM

So you want to punish an entire district because of what you believe to have happened with one child? Activities and foreign language requirements are the very things that make kids thrive and perform better. Do you really want our children to fall behind the rest of the world? These kids are the future and they will be caring for all of us one day as doctors, police officers, fireman, politicians, teachers, architects . . . It is sick that we place tax rates above education in this country. " Apr 23, 10 4:29 PM

I completely agree. As Ms. Riccardi has made the choice not to seek another term then she most certainly should NOT have a say in such a major decision. The newly elected board member will take over in July and, as they will have 3 years to go and can be held accountable, it should be that person who is the third vote.

Westhampton Beach man receives GOP nod for assembly; Thiele gets Democratic endorsement

Mr. Blumenthal, I am with the other poster on this. Your political views are extreme. No question. So, how about explaining some of the other far right commentary you've posted on his board: Let's start with your insistence that insurance reform which leaves control with private insurers is a "government takeover" Did you read the legislation or did Glenn Beck explain it to you?

Financial aid legislation ended the wasted federal dollars spent to pay private banks as middlemen between universities and students, but you said "the bill once again expands government at the expense of private industry" Whose side are you on, the people or the banks?

You requested "Please show me the case of an uninsured adult citizen in the First Congressional District who can't afford coverage and would not be served by one of the 25 existing Federal or State programs!" I challenge you to prove that there is NOT a single individual who would not be served.

Tax credits for homeowners have been proven to have been a boost to new home sales, but you dismiss it without logic or reason and despite the facts.

What kind of person would actually say with a straight face, "the wild, baseless claims that Al Gore and others have made about the dire consequences of too much carbon in the atmosphere have been proven by reality to be utterly without merit." You did. Who else would spew such nonsense: Palin, Limbaugh and Beck all of whom you probably consider experts on climate science.

Mr. Blumenthal, your far right talking points are all over these boards and one has only to click on the link next to your comments to read them. I cannot understand how someone with such rigid, fundamentalist, myopia could possibly be a guidance counselor. " May 22, 10 8:44 PM

I believe someone has already said this, but it bears repeating: Since Obama was elected president there have been four special elections and the democrats have been victorious in every single one. Oh, and as for the teabag favorite Scott Brown, he was the 60th vote for two major pieces of legislation including the financial reform package that just passed. Guess he knows where the smart money is." May 23, 10 2:25 PM

You are such an angry person." May 24, 10 8:14 AM

Mr. Blumenthal, why do you ignore proven statistics that say immigrant workers are a net positive for our economy. Do you realize how many hundreds of millions of dollars "illegals" who hope to become citizens contribute to social security - a program from which they will never benefit. Instead of dealing with WHY the immigrants come here, you want to deport 20 million people. Again I ask you, how would you pay for this and how would you help the economy to recover? Yeah, close the border. So what. You completely ignore the larger issue.

Why don't you fight Wall Street, private insurers, big oil, corporate greed? After all, is it really wise for us to choose which laws we will enforce and which we won't? " May 24, 10 8:21 AM

Even though you will surely find any number of lame reasons to delegitimize the source, here you go - http://www.newsweek.com/id/238028 In the future I suggest you do your own research." May 24, 10 10:13 AM

Mr. Blumenthal, some evidence that your claims regarding new home tax credits are completely false, the AP is reporting

"Home sales surpassed expectations for April as government incentives provided a temporary boost to the housing market.

The National Association of Realtors says sales of previously owned homes rose 7.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.77 million. That was the best showing in five months and better than the 5.63 million units economists had expected.

The federal government provided a big boost to home sales this spring by offering first-time buyers a tax credit of up to $8,000. Homeowners looking to upgrade could qualify for a credit of up to $6,500. "" May 24, 10 10:20 AM

It is not incumbent upon me to provide you with anything beyond my own opinions. Since you find it necessary to anoint yourself keeper of this board, I have gone back and looked at a number of your comments and I am NOT surprised to find that you have made any number of assertions that are NOT backed up by any source. Additionally, it seems that the vast majority of your time is spent attacking other posters instead of addressing the topic of the article.

As I said before, it is no surprise that you would question any evidence that I might submit, however, if you had bothered to actually read the article you would have seen that the data put forth was actually sourced. The way the internet works is you click on a blue highlighted word and you are taken to that source.

In the future, if you are going to make such requests of others, it is incumbent upon you to do the same yourself.
" May 24, 10 1:15 PM

Razza, my posting was in response to Mr. Wheeler, but as you see fit to join the conversation, I will say it again - if you had bothered to read the article you would see that there are at least two studies that are referenced. Of course, one was conducted by Harvard so I am confident that you will dismiss it as "intellectual hooey" " May 24, 10 3:52 PM

Mr. Blumenthal, I have read your link - your ideas are outdated and out of touch. The idea is to challenge kids, to prepare them for the future, not turn our high schools into vocational dumps in an age of technology.

And why do you refer to special needs children as "disabled"? Not just once, but over and over again. If a child has a learning disability he or she is not "disabled", they have a learning disability. They have special needs. They are not just lazy or incapable of learning. You don't save money by letting them slide by. Even worse, what you are actually saying is that special needs kids aren't really special needs kids at all so why spend the extra money on them, let's just teach them how to make wallets or bird houses instead.

We lag behind almost all other industrialized democracies when it comes to educating our kids. Why do you Republicans always look to schools as a place to save money?

As for immigration, you left the comments on this board and those comments speak volumes about you as a politician.

Your plan is nothing more than a gimmick that will not work. What you are advocating is an end to teaching to the test. I agree with that, end the lousy Bush era no child left behind, but it is not a tax lowering scheme.

Add me to the list of those "shocked" by your proposals." May 24, 10 8:11 PM
