Rally held to support push for federal immigration reform

to make it discriminatory? Would tat suit you?" May 10, 10 12:33 PM

The estimated cost of deporting illegals is $94 billn in 2007,not counting the cost of finding them and trying them in court.Not to mention the manpower that will need to be re-diverted from other areas of law enforcement.

http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/09/13/estimate-for-deporting-illegal-immigrants-94-billion/

I still don't see you posting anything but hyperbole and opinion.

Town reassessment complicates Hampton Bays school tax scenario

Nice cherry picking.
Jefferson also wrote about education-

Thomas Jefferson-". . . whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government; that, whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them right."

1."that democracy cannot long exist without enlightenment.
2.that it cannot function without wise and honest officials.
3.that talent and virtue, needed in a free society, should be educated regardless of wealth, birth or other accidental condition.
4.that the children of the poor must be thus educated at common expense."

and this-
1."To give every citizen the information he needs for the transaction of his own business;
2.To enable him to calculate for himself, and to express and preserve his ideas, his contracts, and accounts, in writing;
3.To improve, by reading, his morals and faculties;
4.To understand his duties to his neighbors and country, and to discharge with competence the functions confided to him by either;
5.To know his rights; to exercize with order and justice those he retains; to choose with discretion the fiduciary of those he delegates; and to notice their conduct with diligence, with candor, and judgment;
6.And, in general, to observe with intelligence and faithfulness all the social relations under which he shall be placed." (as cited in Peterson, 1960, p. 239)" May 11, 10 9:52 AM

I agree that most of the innefficiencies are in the administrative end;a self-sustaining beauracracy based on the self-importance some (but not all) administrators put on themselves.
I am an alumni of HBHS;I now live in Southampton,where I have 2 children in the school system.I am involved in the school,and I encourage all parents to become involved-that's how you learn about the issues that will affect not only your kids,but the allocation of taxpayer monies on different programs.Though there has to be a certain amount of 'give and take',without community input-if the community is apathetic toward the school,it becomes too easy for the school to take advantage of the community.
Though I am in favor of sports programs,the spending on them can be a little over enthusiastic,mostly because they appeal to a fairly small section of the school community,while cutting spending on programs like art and music,which are more enriching to the general school population,(and other programs that contribute to academic success) is self-defeating.Too much weight is given to competitive athletics simply because they are what gets the schools in the papers.
There needs to be a development of curriculum that can serve the entire community that involves every member of the school,from community event planning to local business involvement,job training programs,civics (remember civics?Not many schools teach it anymore) economics.
NCLB has been a big drain on local school districts throughout the country;preparing kids to take tests on knowledge that someone 'thinks' they should know and requiring kids to take tests developed and distributed by big corporations-who can charge not only for the test,but for the test results-costs school districts thousands-another drain on taxpayers that diverts time from actual classroom time that could be better spent on other things.NCLB has never been fully funded,yet because it is mandated,local schools pass the cost of self-funding on through taxes.Not a good use of limited resources.

Rally held to support push for federal immigration reform

Call it what it is.
The law was conceived (by people with connections to white supremacy organisations) with one group in mind;it targets Hispanics;it will promote and encourage discriminatory practices toward Latinos.Despite being applicable to any illegal immigrants,we know who it is meant for.
We'll seeore incidents like the one in this vido-

" May 12, 10 7:07 AM

Its about their place of origin.If you hire legel immigrants,why not support a path to citizenship?Deportation is not an economic or logistic possibility.

It doen't mattr how many people supprt it if it is discriminatory in its nature;in a pure democracy the majority rules,butthi country is't a pure democracy;this country was designed by the founding fathers to have a mechanism to protect the minority and a constitution to assure that rights are protected.The Arizona law casts a shadow of suspicion on anyone with an accent or trait that indicates they are Hispanic.It rquirs that they produce documentation of legal residence under the threat of arrest.South Africa did that under arpartheid.Germany did that to the Jews.We are a better country than that;mass deporation won't work,the concentration of immigrants is much more than it was 50 years ago." No,its not my opinion,its directly from the constitution,which I have right in front of me right now.Anybody with the aptitude to work a keyboard can look it up themselves.
If the founding fathers were so worried about tyranny so as to revolt,why would they allow so much power to the executive, such as giving him the sole power to declare war?Couldn't that lead to the same kind of tyranny that they just revolted against?
And if the Founding fathers were so intent on giving the president such power,why did they outline the powers of the congress in Article 1 and the powers o the president in Article 2,with no mention of the president having the singular power to declare war?

You would have to know the difference between pre-emptive war and preventive war to understand the presidential justification for entry into Korea.

Very doubtful they will be thrown out,all the right has is fringe elements that seem to be self-destructing.I'm looking forward to their re-election,and the addition of more democratic seats in the house and senate this November." Jun 5, 10 8:13 PM

This is from the War Powers Act of 1973,delineating the power to declare war-
"SEC. 2. (a)
It is the purpose of this joint resolution to fulfill the intent of the framers of the Constitution of the United States and insure that the collective judgement of both the Congress and the President will apply to the introduction of United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicate by the circumstances, and to the continued use of such forces in hostilities or in such situations.
SEC. 2. (b)
Under article I, section 8, of the Constitution, it is specifically provided that the Congress shall have the power to make all laws necessary and proper for carrying into execution, not only its own powers but also all other powers vested by the Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any department or officer thereof.
SEC. 2. (c)
The constitutional powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, are exercised only pursuant to (1) a declaration of war, (2) specific statutory authorization, or (3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces."

Bush used deception to involve us in Iraq,he was justified and supported in his aggression against Afghanistan,but abandoned that war in favor of escalating the war in Iraq.
" Jun 5, 10 8:21 PM

Again,no response to the topic,another personal attack.If you got nothin',why should anybody here read what you post?I gave intelligent answers based on facts that anybody can check out with a little effort,which seems beyond some posters here who are only interested in hate and misinformation. If all you have is shallow attacks and talking points,good luck getting respect from anybody here who is willing to take the initiative and research what either of us say.Its about time more people become willing to call out some of the right wing blowhards and bullies around here." Jun 6, 10 7:49 AM

"So now Bush didn't insure the collective judgment of Congress either."

No he didn't.He never met the requirements of congress to justify the invasion of Iraq;he never proved there were WMD's,he never established a connection between Saddam Hussein and al Quaida,he never proved there was a meeting between al Quaida and Iraqi officials,he lied about Iraq trying to obtain yellowcake uranium from Niger,then outed a covert CIA agent to avenge the fidings of that proof.All the statements in his SOTU address in 2003 were based on estimates and conjecture from the findings of UNSCOM who were unable to find the WMD's, which, after seven years still haven't been found because Saddam Hussein was for the most part complying with the terms of the first Gulf war. Of course Hussein was posturing,he needed to in order to
keep Iran from becoming the leading power in the region,which they did when Bush attacked Iraq.The U.N. weapons inspectors never found the weapons,neither did we,and Bush forced the weapons inspectors out of Iraq when he made it clear an attack was inevitable." Jun 6, 10 7:33 PM

Maybe some of you should learn to converse and debate an issue without making personal attacks.

There is a lot of rhetoric about government,yet when even those who cry about government's size and structure won't pursue an issue they, in fact, do more to promote the corruption and status quo than to fight it. Shinnecocks expect final word on recognition Tuesday

Congratulations to the Shinnecock Nation for finally getting the recognition they deserve.
Its ironic that a native American tribe that was one of the first to welcome white European settlers to our shores had to wait 400 years for the descendants of those settlers to recognise the legitimacy of their existence.

It isn't rocket science,there's a lot to agree about;but we need to get past the partisan sh*t first.We also need to strip the issue and come to terms with the fact that we all will have to make concessions and compromises;what you posted makes sense;theres a lot to it all and part of it will be things like continuing to teach english language skills but allowing some of the teaching to be done in Spanish,since concepts that are already difficult to understand would only become more complicated if taught in a language one hasn't yet mastered.There are lots of issues to address,but I do agree that a path to citizenship is necessary.At least that will assure a handle on the illegals already here,and casts a shadow of suspicion on those who don't honestly want to become a citizen.
The employment problem is much more complicated;Job creation in some new fields need to funded and encouraged;renewable and alternate energy systems,etc. We will still be dependent on oil because our transportation system is based on it,but,again,developing mass transit systems and utilising existing rail systems can help eliminate some traffic congestion,thus reducing some oil consumption.Many years ago,I remember freight being delivered by rail and distributed by smaller,local trucking companies.
These are all ideas that need to bediscussed and debated,I don't have all the answers,but if we can reach at least some common ground (like we did on this topic) it leaves room for discussion instead of bickering,which doesn't do any of us any good.

Providing hungry people with an “ample food supply,” says Bauer only encourages the great unwashed of our society to breed more poor wretches whom the state is forced to feed. "" Jul 10, 10 8:23 PM

I would need to see proof of "families on welfare for generations".The suggestion that we limit people from 'breeding' sounds more than a little like neutering the poor because they are undesirable and need to be either controlled or eliminated,which is a dangerous suggestion." Jul 11, 10 7:30 AM

I understand what your saying;I didn't mean to come across in a negative way,there are more than a few on these forums who have extreme positions to my right;I am not afraid of being called a 'lefty' or a 'liberal',as defined by JFK.

Wal street and corporate America have driven the working class down since Reagans' time at least;wages have been flat for years,even Greenspan when he addressed the fed at one point appeared proud of the fact that wages are suppressed because of fear created by corporate entities.All news and advertising is geared toward benefitting business,creating an aristocracy and an impovershed class while squeezing the middle class out of existence.
Clinton had the workfare program to employ welfare recipients,but it was ended;we need someting like that again to employ people,maybe working in community service jobs-working at the dump,senior citizen centers,etc.
A big part of the immigration problem in this area is that the illegals are taking some jobs from the construction industry that pay well enough to help modestly support a family;skilled trades are safe but ewntering their fields is tough.
I support apath to citizenship,but we must require strict adherence and maybe have benchmarks.We'll never be able to just ship them all out no matter how angry people are;there are too many and the logistics are too complicated." Jul 11, 10 8:11 PM

I didn't attack her right have guns.I ststed that she demonstrated poor judgement. If guns compensate for someones' personal shortcomings,they should do all they can to prove that having guns hides their faults." Jul 30, 10 9:07 PM

Ground level photos can be used to plan a terrorist attack.This is probably why she was arrested." Jul 30, 10 9:17 PM

I refuse to defend stupidity.

"Late on a Saturday night two weeks ago, an unemployed carpenter packed his mother's Toyota Tundra with guns and set off for San Francisco with a plan to kill progressives.

When California Highway Patrol officers stopped him on an interstate in Oakland for driving erratically, Byron Williams, wearing body armor, fired at police with a 9mm handgun, a shotgun and a .308-caliber rifle with armor-piercing bullets, Oakland police say. Shot and captured after injuring two officers, Williams, on parole for bank robbery, told investigators that he wanted "to start a revolution" by "killing people of importance at the Tides Foundation and the ACLU," according to a police affidavit. His mother, Janice, told the San Francisco Chronicle that her son had been watching television news and was upset by "the way Congress was railroading through all these left-wing agenda items"

Sounds like Berlin in the 40's to me. Innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around. Just to clarify, it is their job to protect and serve, not illegally detain and trample constitutional rights. "

where do you stand on illegal immigration? Would you apply the same standard?" Jul 31, 10 8:34 PM

Is it a question of national security?
"It was news to me, but military bases and nuclear facilities can restrict photographs – even from the outside area. Even if you’re not trespassing onto government land, taking pictures of these installations could be illegal.

Don’t even try. We’re not talking misdemeanor illegal. You might be shipped off and never seen again. Yep, crazy illegal!"

Vice President Joe Biden vacations in Southampton

There is excessive spending in Washington.
We could start by cutting the defense budget-there's no need to spend more than the next 20 countries combined on defense while the people of this country are struggling,losing their homes and unemployed.
Start by cutting defense and reirecting that money toward infrastructure,education and healthcare, all of which have problems of their own.These are issues that will benefit everyone for the long term;when you make a bullet,it is used once and gone forever.Invest back into improving the country and stop wasting our damn money on being the worlds police force.
With the savings,we could even releive some of the tax burden on the middle class." Aug 1, 10 7:14 AM
