Altschuler, Bishop Will Take Part In Campaign Event On Thursday

The right hates Alan Grayson because he exposed their true agenda." Oct 19, 10 7:31 PM

Raucous Meeting Focuses On Fights At Southampton High School

The school has had changes in administration at least 4-5 times in the last several years-pincipals,assistant principals, directors of Pupil services (the third in 4 years) and the suprintendant. There is no continuity in the administration and it is affecting discipline throughout the district as well as te morale of students, faculty and staff. It is developing into a major problem.
The scholl is responsible for informing the police of any threat to the students or faculty. That is a major failure in its obligation to the community;haven't they ever heard of Columbine?" Oct 19, 10 9:04 PM

Altschuler, Bishop Will Take Part In Campaign Event On Thursday

and where will Altshuler live if he's elected?Do you expect him to telecommute to congress?" Oct 19, 10 9:07 PM

The republicans voted together almost 100% of the time, and always against the peoples' interests." Oct 19, 10 9:08 PM

like I said,he exposed the rights' true agenda." Oct 19, 10 9:09 PM

and would you care to address the fact that the republicans refused to participate in creating legislation tto help solve problems and improve the economy? The party of NO
And it will be more of th same if republicans win big this election-they will still oppose any legislation proposed by democrats. You can see that by the way they oppose everything the democrats have accomplished and propose.More party of no,more gridlock, more blaming the democrats for the stubborness and lack of participation of the republicans." Oct 19, 10 9:36 PM

the rights' agenda is smaller government-to that end, they drive a wedge between the eople and the government, claiming to represent the true interests ofte people, but actually cultivate a mistrust of the government allowing them to take power and force their own agenda which supports corporate power and reducing the ability of the people to effect change that is necessary to advnce society.
Government is essential to provide for the common needs of the people.Though they professes to speak for everyone, the people who pursue this agenda use selective issues and policies to isolate and enlarge differences that force separation between them and hinder their ability to effectively participate in the process of government.
Conservatism demands conformity and is willing to accept single party rule to not only discourage diversity of ideas, but to forcefully prohibit it.Diversity of ideas promotes multiple approaches to complicated problems.
Concience,not conformity, defines America." Oct 19, 10 9:56 PM

Freedom is more than private value." Oct 19, 10 9:58 PM

as usual,your wrong.

"In fact, when the history of this administration is written, Obama's opening act is likely to be judged as more impressive than any president's — Democrat or Republican — since the mid-1960s. "If you're looking at the first-two-year legislative record," says Ornstein, "you really don't have any rivals since Lyndon Johnson — and that includes Ronald Reagan."

"Lack of participation by the Republicans”, are you kidding me?? You mean like the Democrats locking doors so that republicans couldn’t ... more participate in Health Care discussion. Plaaaeeese."

the republicans have been deadbeats.Your supporting a party that has not participated in the legislative process in at least 2 years,
The party of no is the party of deadbeats, collecting taxpayer money and not doing their job.
" Oct 19, 10 10:07 PM

then why is the riht so preoccupied with private freedom?" Oct 19, 10 10:12 PM

of course you don't.You won't face the fact that the republicans haven't participated in the forming or passing of any important legislation in the last couple of years.
Run away. " Oct 19, 10 10:14 PM

taxes are lower than they've been in years.
And debt wasn't a problem for the right until Obama became president." Oct 19, 10 10:31 PM

Taxes are lower than they've been in years.
Lower taxes aren't always in the peoples interest, especially when we have crumbling infrastructure and rising poverty. The right-all of the right-has no social concience ad is only interested in getting paid by having lower taxes." Oct 19, 10 10:35 PM

we're not the ones repeating the mantra-from your previous posts-
"Phil, sure, for clarity, it is the party of HELL NO. More debt and spending isn't the answer. "
"Phil, That says nothing about the "rights agenda" (which would be lower taxes and lower debt). "
"none of which Tim Bishop is interested in with his support of massive debt and taxes. "
"Taxes are sky rocketing"

(no,they're not.)
"Value is more than private freedom. "
"The Democrats have nothing but failed policies to offer. More spending - more debt- more taxes.."

your the one who keeps bringing up taxes and spending. These quotes are just from this thread.
hippocracy much?

" Oct 19, 10 10:44 PM

There you go-I post something that refutes what you said and you try to back away from it. Bush did not win by 537 electoral votes, since that is what you said he won by-
"Peoplefirst, By Gore's own recount rules Bush won by 537 votes.."
so are you talking about electoral votes or popul;ar votes?I posted the totals for popular vote and it shows that Gore won the popular vote. And since there are only 538 electoral votes up for grabs, somewhere you got it very wrong." Oct 19, 10 10:49 PM

read my post about the right wing agenda-your comment is a perfect example of what I said about creating division between government and the people. The far right wing agenda lives!!!" Oct 19, 10 10:51 PM

actually, the closeness of the race triggered an automatic recount-
"When the initial count was completed on November 18, Franken was trailing Coleman by 215 votes.[4][5] This close margin triggered a mandatory recount"

when th voteere re-counted,Franken was determined to be the winner

But then-

"On January 6, 2009, Coleman's campaign filed an election contest and on April 13, a three-judge panel dismissed Coleman's Notice of Contest and ruled that Franken had won the election by 312 votes
Coleman’s appeal of the panel's decision to the Minnesota Supreme Court was unanimously rejected on June 30,[11] and he conceded the election.[12] Al Franken was sworn in as the junior Senator from Minnesota on July 7, 2009.[13]

so the tax increase is the result of Bush policy.what you want is another tax cut along the same lines, which is what the dems have proposed, minus the tax cut for the top earners. The dems would be glad to give that, but the republicans won't do it without extending the tax cuts for the richest.
Actually, extending the tax cuts will add tom the debt-about 3 trillion dollars-so if they expire, there will less additional debt ccrued.Let them expire. The additional tax revenue can then be applied toward paying down the debt your all unhinged about.

" Oct 19, 10 11:15 PM

Altschuler balks; debate with Bishop canceled

the right doesn't want to pay taxes. They want a free ride.
Why do they hate the government?I posted some thoughts on it in the other article and called them out on their obsession with taxes.
The right doesn't want to pay for societal necessities-they just want to freeload

" Oct 20, 10 7:37 AM

you don't give a rats ass about children, your only using that argument to support your tax cut argument. If you really cared about kids yo'd support education head start and anti-poverty programs.Instead, the right wants to pay off the debt by attacking social programs and education which will target a narrow portion of the population who need those services more than anyone needs a tax cut. The right isn't serious about reigning in the deficit because they aren't willing to admit that the sacrifices that need to be made will cost.

Nobody likes paying taxes, but if the right is really serious about paying down the debt and sharing sacrifice-something they rant on all the time-let all the tax cuts expire and apply the revenue toward the debt.Everybody sacrifices, everybody contributes." Oct 20, 10 8:12 AM

All the problems we are now facing started with reagan and his plicies.History bears this out.His amnesty gave illegals a green light to enter this country. He was the great enabler for illegal immigration.

It would be great if everyone here could go, it would be a trip to meet some of you." Oct 21, 10 6:40 PM

"They feel minorities are in some way inferior and need artificial advantages.

I take this to be an attack on affirmative action.Or as the right likes to describe it,reverse discrimination, which i a direct attack on miorities who make up a large portion of the poor in this country. The right uses this argument to eliminate or restrict access for minorities to higher education by limiting accessability to loans and programs that would lift them out of poverty.Every time you hear a right winger speak of a 'colorless society' they are referring to limiting opportunity for a portion of the population based on race, gender or identity. Ward Connerty, one of the most vocal of any advocates fr the elimination of Affirmative Action programs was endorsed by the KKK;tat should tell you something about the right and their views on minorities.

"They believe in tolerance for everything even if it means your life will turn to crap as long as everyone's life is equally as crappy."

this is classic You admit to wantin to create an aristocracy, with only a ruling class and a lower class made up of the most unworthy. The rich and powerful should rule because o birthright and everyone else shoud be grateful fo the priveledge of serving them.
This country is founded on the principal of equality and opportunity. If you don't beleive in it,maybe you were born 300 years too late in the wrong country. The revolution was fought to end this exact point you make with this statement and shows your utter contempt for the defining principles this country is founded on.

"They want your nose out of there bedroom but are more than happy putting their nose in your bank account or ... more the size of your uber home and selfish evil SUV or your scout troops."

The right to privacy is one of the basic rights guaranteed by the constitution (4th Amendment) and is supposedly held sacred by the right until it inconveniently gets in the way of their agenda.
If you defraud the government and thereby the people by skirting tax laws or take advantage of others and profit from them unfairly you should be held accountable. The rights' plan to 'shrink government' of course includes shrinking the IRS who is responsible for investigating tax evasion.I remember the right screeching that ifyou hve nothing to hide you have nothing to fear. What are you afraid of?

"They are progressives because they hold freedom of the press sacred until it is that evil talk radio or business channel you listen to."

When the media is dominated by a single world view,we are less free because opposing views are being suppressed. When hate dominates broadcast media there is no exchange of ides or discussion because todays meia is one way, with no way for opposing views to be expressed. Democracy works best when there is an exchange of idas, and if that exchange is prohibited, either by the moguls of media or the government, the free exchange of ideas stagnates and feedom withers.I've heard Limbaugh,O'Reilly,Levin,Hannity-all the right wing pundits shout down and disconnect their callers and gueats to suppress an oinion different than their own. That does a disservice to their listeners/viewers because it demonstrates intolerace for ideas. It seeks to create a single world view and conformit that will not tolerate free thought.

"They believe they can Indoctrinate, I mean teach you kids better than you."

another doozy.
Free public education is essential to democracy;the exposure to diverse ideas teaches children to approach problems and find solutions from different angles as opposed to being exposd to a limited world view prejuidiced by the shortcomins of individual experience and preference. Public education exposes our young to ferent cultural backgrounds which helps them learn and accept diversity.A child can still be poisoned by the prejuidices of faily but will learn in public school that there ae world views that re justified because of cultural differences.

"They pander to the womens vote claiming woman are some sort of victims"

Womens' righs are only a recent dvelopment in this country, and hey were opposed by the conseratives. Women are still considered second class citizens by the right, who want to tell them what they should do with their own bodies, that they aren't entitled to equal pay,and should b submissive to men.

'yet support countries that force their woman to walk around under a sheet with an eye sliit"

pure spin.
We are still fighting for complete and equal rights for women in this country, countries you describe are nother culture, far different than ours, and we have o control over them. We can dvocate for change, but we are powerless to effect change lest we end up in a quagmire like we are in Afghanistan .

"Progressive woman are happy to go along with the party as long as you don't touch there right to terminate babies"

The right gives lip service to ndividual freedom yet insists on maintaining control over women an the choices they may need to make. They would force women to have childen resulting from rape and incest, some of today's candidates going so far as to want to monitor every pegnancy in the country.Personal freedm unless they don't want you to have it.

"Now they want your equity as Nancy put it yesterday, Your Madam speaker wants to put a Windfall Tax on retirement income and 401k so she can give it to broken union pensions and the 12 Million ILLEGAL Immigrants making sure those dollars are redistributed to the poor and working class".

taxes are the price you pay for the freedom you enjoy; when you are born you enter a contract with this country to cntribute to its success, that means that social responsibility belongs to everyone to abide by laws and spport the community that isthe populationof this country. If you don't want to contrbute to maintaining society you are part of the problem and not prt of the solution.
The immigration issue began with Reagan granting amnety to immigrants, giving licenseto all that folloed to enter this country on the premise that they will be welcomed.Blame him for the immgration problem,he nabled it.
Reagan was responsible for many of our preset problems, from the social securty crisis to promoting energy dependence to healthcar and numerous other issues that can b traced back to his administration.
Reagan economics is bsed on the premise that unrestrained wealt has license to buy the political system out fromunder everyone else.

"Obama is doing the same thing with the Health care bill. "

healthcare is a right;that is accepted in every civilised country in the world. It became a crisis in this coutry after hospitals and pharmaceuticals were de-regulated by reagan.Another crisis that can be traced back to "Saint Ronnie".

"They want the military to disarm and act as a global red cross distributing Americas tax dollars across the world "

We spend more on arms and the military than the rest of the world combined; the imperialist policies practiced over the last 30-40 years have turned Amerca into an empire, garneing fear where we once had respect. We are mistrusted by most of the world, mostly due to the policies enacted by republican presidents in the recent past. The nation-building policies enacted by republicns since Reagan, including the most recent advocated by PNAC has done more to damage America thn anything else in our history. We give Iraq universal healthcare and rebuild their infrastructure, yet we are opposed here in the U.S. by the very party that gave it to our defeated enemies;history shows this has been the case for decades.

"NASA to stop doing that silly outer space stuff so they can concentrate on being a counseling service to foster good relations with the Muslims that are trying to take over the planet,"

Though space exploration is verifiably useful, the costs and risks of manned space exploration is prohibitive in the era of advance technology.Unmanned exploration with the goal of eventual return to manned flghts makes sense to avoid disasters that cost hundreds of millions.
Fostering better relations ith the muslim community is essetia since they are about a quarter of the popution of the world. In the future, the white race will be a inority,no just i the U.. but in the world, and its history of subjugating other races to its prejuidices will not be forgotten if we continue to be cntemptuous toward other races.

Yes,in less than two weeks the people will speak, and hopefully they will not
endorse the views you advocate;yu have shown contempt for minorities, women, the prro, the working class, religions and the constitution.
Yor vews are documented;hopefully people will recognise them for what they are and realise that they represent a narrow and prejuidiced word view and reject them totally and completely." Oct 21, 10 8:17 PM

No,it was opened by Ronald Reagan on the advice of Alan Greenspan in the mid 80's to pay for the deficit created by his tax cuts in 81 and 83, when he lowered the taxrates for the top 5% from 70% to eventually 28% in 1988.This caused him to raise payroll taxes to fill the hole left from what he borrowed from SS.Payroll taxes doubled while the rchest got alower tax rate.At the time, the doubled payroll tax hike was te biggest tax hike in history.

"In 1983, Reagan signed legislation aimed at preserving Social Security's solvency by raising payroll taxes and taxing Social Security benefits of upper-income Americans.

The plan certainly preserved Social Security but also demonstrated that Reagan was willing to impose tax increases, even if he didn't propose them and rarely accepted them with enthusiasm.

As former Reagan adviser Bruce Bartlett wrote in a 2003 article for National Review, Reagan signed two major tax increases in 1982 that took back much of the break he'd provided in his 1981 tax bill. After the Social Security tax increase of 1983, Reagan approved further tax increases — in one form or another — in 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987"

"if Bishop and his cronies retain the majority the death tax will rob our chilren's inheritance"

the inheritance tax was promoted by the founding fathers to discourage generational wealth, which would promote the development of an aristocracy where the rich would have more control over the masses due to their wealth allowing them more access to the government. But its also interesting that the right repeats the mantra that the poor should "pull themselves up b their bootstraps" while they give the rich a free ride-they want to allow the children of the rich toinherit wealth and not hav to work for it. The rich get to freeload on the backs of the working class. Not to mention that the inheritance tax will not affect the middle class, only those who stand to inherit millions.

"Take alook at IRS yearly reports. Whenever tax law changed to reduce rates the actually amount of tax revenue went up. "

" the evidence against the Laffer Hypothesis is staggering, and few if any serious economists believe the hypothesis to be applicable to the U.S. tax code in its current state. The Department of the Treasury authoritatively showed this to be the case in this 2006 report. That report shows that in each of the four years following the 1981 and 2001 tax cuts, revenue markedly declined. In contrast, following the 1993 tax increases, revenue increased. Simple as that. It seems that the tradeoff does in fact exist: if you want more money to go to funding government services, you're going to have to pay more in taxes. This really shouldn’t be all that surprising."

"In an interview with the conservative magazine Human Events, McIntyre (owner of real clear politics) described the philosophy behind the Web site as based on "freedom" and "common-sense values." Said Bevan, "We think debate on the issues is a very important thing. We post a variety of opinions." It always comes dow to 'us' and 'them' with the right-their 'us' s those who agree with them and their twisted vision of America to the exclusion of everybody else-we saw it in the last 20 yars with the continuous vendetta against Clinton, the 'your either with us or against us' afer 8-11,the demonization of respected war veterans, and the rascist attacks on Obama his citizenship and the questioning of his religion. The right ha no intention of govrning fairly with the interest of the people in mind.Their attitude is on display right here on this forum." Oct 26, 10 6:55 PM

the 3.8 % sales tax has been debinked

"Q: Does the new health care law impose a 3.8 percent tax on profits from selling your home?

A: No, with very few exceptions. The first $250,000 in profit from the sale of a personal residence won’t be taxed, or the first $500,000 in the case of a married couple. The tax falls on relatively few — those with high incomes from other sources. "

you really should lean to ignore those e-mails that get sent around-or learn t check them out before misleading others.

"Your children are being indctrinated!"
The right is paranoid to the point of total meltdown
Heres a newsflash for you-1 in 3 registered voters are undecided. If he republicn tea party is going to have such a major swep, why are o many still undecided?
In California, that bastion of liberalism where the republicorp is so enraged, all the major democrats are leading their races.

Speaking of tim warps, did anybody see Meg Whitmans ad where she talks about how great California was 30 years ago?
Jerry Brown turned it into an ad for himself.

I'm going to vote for Tim Bishop, too.
And Kirsten Gillbrand and Chuck Schumer.

More misinformation.
It wasn't jerry Brown who called her that,it was an associate-

"An aide to Democratic candidate, Jerry Brown, was accidentally recorded suggesting that Brown call his Republican opponent, Meg Whitman, a "whore" because she had sold out to special interests."

Brown apologised.

do you ever get the facts right?

" Oct 26, 10 9:35 PM

yeah,right. 25% of workers is a majority.
you keep piting the softballs and I'll keep hitting them out of the park.

"In 2009, union members accounted for 25.2 percent of wage and salary
workers in New York and 19.3 percent in New Jersey, compared to 24.9
percent and 18.3 percent, respectively, in 2008 the U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Michael L.
Dolfman noted that union membership rates in both New York and New
Jersey have remained relatively stable over the last 10 years,
fluctuating around 25 and 19 percent, respectively. (See chart 1.)
Despite lower rates than in 1995, when state data were first
comparable, both States had union membership rates above that for
the nation in 2009, as union members accounted for 12.3 percent of
employed wage and salary workers in the United States."

once again, you try to twist the facts to intentionally mislead." Oct 26, 10 9:39 PM

a twofer.
We want to keep the poor and minorities down where we can control them.We don't want a healthy public,we want to enable large corporate conglomerates t profit from and control healthcare because we don't want to have to contribute to the general welfare of this country.

" Oct 27, 10 7:34 AM

I'm glad you posted this.
Once again, the republicans attack minority voters, just like they do every election cycle, to suppress the minority vote.
The republicans have sought to disenfranchise minorities in almost every election cycle since Reagan. Its used to set up challenges to election results.
The republican party hates minorities and doesn't want them to vote.
Once again, look at the history." Oct 27, 10 7:38 AM

Naturally, they'll attack you for this. They can't handle truth, even when you back it up.We keep proving them liars and they just keep coming back.I've directed people here so they can watch this conversation. You should see some of the responses they have.LOL!
As a centrist, you represent the true center, not the embarrased republicans who began calling themselves independents to distance themselves from the republican party during the Bush years and now form the tea party.

"Voter fraud is actually less likely to occur than lightning striking a person, according to data compiled by New York University's Brennan Center for Justice. "

"The goal of such complaints and allegations was to create a barrage of negative publicity about voter-registration groups and the voter-fraud menace that could pave the way for restrictive laws. "

"All these campaigns have created a kind of GOP vote-suppression playbook that aims to limit voting rights in the states and attack registration groups such as ACORN. In most states where ACORN wages ballot-initiative and voter-registration campaigns, Republican lawyers, officials, and some prosecutors routinely file dubious lawsuits and complaints to generate bad press for the voter-registration drives. The lawsuits seldom if ever succeed, but the bad press they engender creates a climate to pass restrictive voting laws. "

The effort to suppress Latino voters may backfire

"In 2006, conservative activists repeatedly claimed that the problem of people casting fraudulent votes was so widespread that it was corrupting the political process and possibly costing their candidates victories.

The accusations turned out to be largely false, but they led to a heated debate, with voting rights groups claiming that the accusations were crippling voter registration drives and squelching turnout.

That debate is flaring up anew.

Tea Party members have started challenging voter registration applications and have announced plans to question any individual voters at the polls whom they suspect of being ineligible"

Of course, the right will deny this..But they're lying to everyone-again.

" Oct 27, 10 8:06 AM

I saw it,too.
Joe Miller did not want to be interviewed by Rachel Maddow.Especially after she made Rand Paul look like a bigot.

Miller was asked if he thought that being gay was a choice or not.
He said its a choice that people make for themselves;he was not clewrly answering the question, and presented his answer with the usual right wing spin hat being gay is a choice. This is one of the tactics the right uses to promote anti-gay sentiment. The suggestion that it's a choice and not a natural phenomona.
As far as gay marriage is concerned,to deny gays the right to marry is to deny them the equal opportunity promised by the constitution.

" Oct 27, 10 4:26 PM

Thanks,Turkey Bridge.
I've been around a long time and there aren't many arguments that can be made by the right that I haven't heard before.I also know how to back up what I say,as do the others you mentioned. We have to keep exposing the hyperbole
and disproving their comments;hopefully there are people readiing here who choose not to post but can make up their own minds,do a little research and make decisions based on the facts presented-whichever way they decide to vote.
We won't change the minds of those who stubbornly refuse to acknowledge the limitations and innaccuracies of their arguments, but by sticking to the facts, keeping discourse going and acknowledging the moral correctne of our positions,we should not fear the upcoming election results.I have confience in the American people;they can see the differennces betwen approaches and know the recent history of both sides.Neither side is perfect-but on is a lot less perfect than the other.I'm glad we're on the correct side." Oct 27, 10 4:36 PM

It isn't a states rights' issue-its a Human Rights issue.
It doesn't matter what any poll says about it;its a decision for two peple who care for eachother to make.
The right wants to keep government out of peoples lives, except when....

"Other than telling us how to live, think, marry, pray, vote, invest, educate our children, and now die,I think the republicans have done a fine job of getting government out of our lives."

New Voting Machines Ready For First Big Test

I haven't had the chance to try the new voting yet-I like th idea of a paper trail, but it seems to be pretty complicated (compared to the old lever machines).

30 years ago Labor was still considered the backbon of the economy.I remember sections of newspapers dedicated to labor and labor issues-now every paper ihas a business section-labor is totally cut out of the picture.
We need to bring labor back-labor issues are supportive of the middle class." Oct 27, 10 7:01 PM

we are there now.The last time we had issues like this was when markets were either de-regulated or not regulated at all. We're in a simila situation now. The business lobby is similar to what it was during the robber baron era when big business monopolised industries and kept labor under it's thumb.
We're in the same boat because of conservative shortsightedness." Oct 27, 10 7:04 PM

Food Pantry Strugglies As Season Of Need Approaches

Your correct;I shouldhave realised that there are other needs witin the community
If you can donate,do so generously.
But also keep in mind othr needs-baby formula, diapers, toilet paper (yes,we sometimes forget the really simple stuff),soap, toothpaste and brushes-all the things we take for granted.By supplying some of the basic essentials, your donations will releve the burden on some families, contribute to their health, and hopefully allow them to be able to use some of their own scarce money to make some of their own purchases, enabling them to retain their dignity and be more self-reliant.
long with carity we hae to allow people to take care ofthemselvesere is no shame in needing a little help.

Instead of being indignant toward the poor and those who are financially strapped,we,as a society ned to begin to address the increase in poverty and address it.Partnering government, business and religious institutions;tax breaks to businesses who create jobs for the poor, government assistance that is geared toward helpingthe poor break the cycle of welfare and the spiritual leadership that will inspire everyone to contribute to creating a community that is illing to share the burden of the poor with the goal of ending depndence." This Year, An Election Year Battle For Bishop

The true center isn't blinded by suc intense hatred that they make statements such as what we've seen here.True centrists see the needs and realise that the left isfar from far left (I admit that Im a bit farther left than most) but when compared to what we're seeing from the right,as represented here,we can lealy see that hey leav lttle room or hope for compromise. Democracy is built on compromise-building a consensus for the common good.I've seen no willingness to compromise from the right in years, and more flexibility from the left than I'd like. But the democrats aren't afraid to disagree with eachother hile in the last decade, the right has moved in lockstep. I don't see that changing if the republicans re-take congress." Oct 27, 10 8:04 PM
