Whale killed with bullet; experts defend how beaching was handled

This whole situation degraded into a three-ring circus. I applaud all of you who made your voices heard over this atrocity - and your voices were the squeaky wheel that made them finally reach for the grease.

We live in a day and age of cell phones, internet and FedEx. There are no excuses. I'm not sure how Mr. Bowman knew what was going to happen to this poor juvenile whale - apparently his crystal ball was wrong.

The MINUTE that whale was discovered on the beach, they should have been coordinating an effort to return it to the water. Unfortunately we will never know if Mr. Bowman's crystal ball was right or not - we will never know if this whale could have been reunited with its pod or its mother. One of the representatives from The Riverhead Foundation told a few of us the first day that in one situation they had tried to return a beached whale to the water four times, and it kept beaching itself. This sounds utterly ridiculous to me - I think all any of us were asking for is one try, not 4.

We will never know if it could have survived, and this is an absolute tragedy. " Apr 9, 10 9:30 PM

I agree - irrespective of what was wrong with this poor creature, nothing justifies not giving it a chance at life, and then letting it wallow and suffer for days in the surf. " Apr 11, 10 7:34 AM

Dog poisoned; was it whale meat?

Wow. Do you guys have jobs that charge for products or services? Somehow you feel that vets shouldn't charge because they love animals. Who is going to pay the rent on the building? Who is going to pay for the tests? Who is going to pay their hourly wage? Or their student loans?

Its ok for a hotel to jack up prices in Louisiana, gouging the reporters and members of the scientific community that are dealing with an ecological disaster, but it's not fair for a veterinarian to charge appropriately for their services.

Think about it. I'm so glad my shelter dogs ended up in my home, and not yours. I hope you never get a pet. " May 6, 10 7:42 PM

I wonder if Sydney didn't step on the missing dart???

Wonderful to hear she made a full recovery. Dr. Turetsky and his staff are wonderful, and so are the staff at East End Emergency - Sydney was in great hands.

You two sound like wonderful pet parents :) " May 6, 10 7:45 PM

Mattituck woman will receive six months for DWI fatality involving Hampton Bays teen

The take home point here is legal limit or not, don't drink anything and drive your car. Period.

(Sorry, the second take home point is that I agree with pretty much everyone here that it is a tragedy - that boy's future is worth more than 6 months. She will serve it, get out and move on. A real tragedy.)" May 29, 10 10:57 PM

DWI charge in Sagaponack accident

My GOD you guys are a hateful bunch. Just look at all these hateful messages going back and forth just because someone said "good job" to the first responders.

Grow up." Jun 6, 10 8:31 AM

Closings spur concerns for winter season

If the Hamptons want to have a year-round population, then the cost of living must come down. This isn't Wall Street. Most jobs here in the Hamptons are for middle-to-low income individuals, and the cost of renting and home ownership is outrageous.

Bring down the cost of living and we will start spending some of our hard-earned money." Oct 15, 10 7:07 AM

Sag Harbor could start cracking down on illegal apartments

I agree that the cost of living here is outrageous, and have considered moving several times. Having said that, I rented a house that had an illegal apartment that posed a significant fire/safety risk. The landlord was a deadbeat and irresponsible. I am just fortunate nothing happened.

Let them work with the building dept to make sure the apartments are safe to live in. " Oct 19, 10 7:59 AM

Closings spur concerns for winter season

Agreed. I've only lived here 3 years but grew up in a small Canadian town. The saddest thing to see (and hear about from locals) is the demise of the small local business. So many of these people who have lived in this community for generations having to close up shop because they can't afford the rent and move elsewhere. " Oct 20, 10 7:50 AM
